For a flexible all-round choice, Nagakiba stands out for its reach and buffing options; Moonveil and Rivers of Blood suit distinct skill-focused builds, while Uchigatana is a strong straightforward option. This ranking covers the eight base-game katanas, not every katana in the current game: the DLC adds Sword of Night and Star-Lined Sword.
How this ranking works
The ranking weighs build compatibility, weapon skill, status effects, reach, acquisition timing, and upgrade flexibility—not just a weapon’s listed attack rating. A database stat without an upgrade level and character build cannot establish which weapon performs best in practice, and the available references do not provide controlled comparative testing. Treat the order as a guide to choosing a weapon for your playstyle, not a universal power ranking or a claim about the current PvP meta.
The eight base-game katanas are Uchigatana, Nagakiba, Serpentbone Blade, Meteoric Ore Blade, Moonveil, Rivers of Blood, Dragonscale Blade, and Hand of Malenia. The wider current-game category also includes the DLC’s Sword of Night and Star-Lined Sword. Eldenpedia’s katana list covers the base-game group; the Elden Ring Wiki’s category reflects the expanded set.
Best Elden Ring katanas, ranked
1. Nagakiba — best for reach and flexibility
Nagakiba is the strongest general-purpose pick in this ranking for players who value range and adaptability. It is described as longer than the other non-DLC katana options, giving it a different spacing profile from shorter choices. Its standard Smithing Stone upgrade path also allows grease or a weapon buff, so it can adapt to a build or encounter instead of locking you into one damage route. ESO-UI’s Nagakiba guide covers its requirements, reach, upgrade path, and buffing flexibility.

- MASSIVE OPEN WORLD
- DEEP, CUSTOMIZABLE COMBAT
- NEW STARTING CLASSES
- NEW PLAYER-FRIENDLY ENHANCEMENTS
2. Moonveil — best for a skill-centered build
Moonveil’s Transient Moonlight skill gives it a distinct role among the base-game katanas. It belongs near the top for players whose build and preferred combat approach make that weapon skill a priority. Its ranking here is conditional: the available sources identify the skill but do not establish that Moonveil outperforms other katanas for every character or situation.
3. Uchigatana — best straightforward option
Uchigatana offers the familiar Unsheathe skill and a direct katana playstyle. It is a sensible choice if you want a less specialized option and your build suits it. It shares Unsheathe with Nagakiba, but the two should not be treated as identical: Nagakiba’s reach and standard-upgrade buff flexibility are reasons to choose it when those qualities matter more.

- ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition
4. Rivers of Blood — best for a Corpse Piler-focused approach
Rivers of Blood is defined here by Corpse Piler, its weapon skill. It can be a compelling pick if you specifically want to build around that skill, but the evidence does not support calling it the best katana for every build or target. Choose it for the combat role you want, rather than assuming that a bleed-oriented setup always wins.
5. Serpentbone Blade — best for a poison route
Serpentbone Blade stands out for poison buildup, offering a status-effect route distinct from the bleed-focused choices readers may be considering. Whether that makes it the better pick depends on the target and build; poison should not be dismissed, but it is not a universal substitute for other status effects. ESO-UI’s Serpentbone Blade guide describes its poison and upgrade characteristics.

6. Meteoric Ore Blade — a distinct skill option
Meteoric Ore Blade has Gravitas, setting it apart from the katana skills above. Its place in the middle of this ranking reflects that distinct option, not a measured damage comparison: the available database lists the skill and attributes, but does not establish a universal performance advantage.
7. Dragonscale Blade — choose for the build that suits it
Dragonscale Blade completes the base-game roster, but the available source material does not establish a comparative advantage that would justify ranking it above the more clearly differentiated choices here. Check whether its requirements and scaling fit your character before investing in it; do not read this position as proof that it is unusable.

8. Hand of Malenia — powerful fit, late-game access
Hand of Malenia is a late-game option: obtain it by defeating Malenia and exchanging her Remembrance. It requires 48 Dexterity, a substantial commitment that makes it a poor early-game recommendation and a better fit for a character already built around high Dexterity. Its final position reflects accessibility and build cost in an all-purpose ranking, not a claim that it is weak for a suitable late-game build. Switchblade Gaming’s ranking also uses criteria such as stat cost and build fit, and notes the weapon’s acquisition and Dexterity requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which katana should you choose?
- Want reach and the option to adapt with grease or a weapon buff? Start with Nagakiba.
- Want to center your playstyle on a named weapon skill? Consider Moonveil for Transient Moonlight, Rivers of Blood for Corpse Piler, Uchigatana or Nagakiba for Unsheathe, and Meteoric Ore Blade for Gravitas.
- Want poison buildup? Consider Serpentbone Blade and weigh poison against your target and build.
- Building for 48 Dexterity and already in the late game? Hand of Malenia is an option after defeating Malenia and trading her Remembrance.
- Choosing between damage numbers? Compare weapons at the same upgrade level with your own attributes and intended setup. A database value alone does not prove practical superiority.
Source notes
The weapon and skill distinctions above are based on Atlasforge’s Elden Ring weapon database, which lists attributes and skills such as Unsheathe, Gravitas, Transient Moonlight, and Corpse Piler. Those entries are comparison inputs, not a controlled ranking. The ordering is editorial judgment informed by the weapon characteristics and acquisition/build guidance cited above.
