There is no single, tested “best” Kintarō build in Ravenswatch. In version 1.06, the strongest choice depends on what your run needs: use Bold Strike for a Defense-cancel finisher and safe melee control, Crushing Combo for a direct Power-to-Special burst loop, or Boomerang Axe when you want useful ranged damage while repositioning. Solo runs should normally add survivability because Kintarō and Kuma share one health system; co-op teams can lean harder into control and burst when allies capitalize on your openings.
This guide covers the Kintarō DLC and patch 1.06, released October 12, 2026. Existing runs were discarded by that update, so the recommendations here apply to new 1.06 runs.

What makes Kintarō different
Kintarō is not two independent characters with separate health pools. Kintarō and Kuma share the same health bar, although they take damage differently. When Kuma is damaged, that damage becomes Internal Damage on Kintarō. Treat every hit absorbed by Kuma as part of your own survival calculation rather than assuming that Kuma can tank indefinitely.
Recommended Free Tools
The character has eight abilities spread across mounted and dismounted play, plus two Ultimates and 26 unlockable Talents in version 1.06. Your build therefore changes how you move between stances instead of simply improving one attack.

| State | Tools | Best use | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mounted on Kuma | Charge, Leap and a blocking Roar; Kuma also attacks automatically | Closing distance, crossing dangerous ground, interrupting a pack and creating a safe opening | Damage to Kuma becomes Internal Damage on Kintarō |
| Dismounted | Axe attacks, Whirl, Pound and Double Leap; Kuma continues automatic claw attacks | Applying sustained melee pressure, exploiting a staggered group and using Defense-to-Attack cancels | You give up some of Kuma’s mobility while committing to melee animations |
The most reliable builds are built around a repeatable transition: mount to reach or control a group, use the stance-specific setup, then dismount or cancel Defense at the moment that produces your damage window.
Quick build guide
| Goal | Core Talent | Supporting choices | How it plays |
|---|---|---|---|
| General-purpose damage and control | Bold Strike | Deafening Cry, Berserk, then Hardened Skin or Strong-Willed | Block with Defense, cancel into Attack for the finisher, and use Roar or Deafening Cry to control the pack |
| Short burst against grouped enemies | Crushing Combo | Area or cooldown-focused magical objects; defensive talent if the map is dangerous | Trigger Power, then cast Special quickly while enemies remain grouped |
| Safer ranged contribution | Boomerang Axe | Mobility, area or cooldown objects; a defensive talent for solo play | Trigger Power to throw a bouncing axe, reposition and repeat before committing to melee |
| Frontline co-op control | Bold Strike or Crushing Combo | Deafening Cry, Brutal Taming, and a survivability option | Line up Charge and Roar, hold enemies in place, then let allies punish the opening |
These are goal-based recommendations, not a measured tier list. No authoritative source publishes a Kintarō win rate, damage-per-second benchmark or universal highest-win-rate build.
Build 1: Defense-cancel damage with Bold Strike
Bold Strike is the most dependable starting point when you want a clear defensive-to-offensive rhythm. The Talent triggers when Kintarō cancels Defense with an Attack and adds a blocking, high-damage finisher. You are rewarded for defending at the right moment rather than holding a block passively.

- Bold Strike: Make the Defense-to-Attack cancel the center of your damage loop.
- Deafening Cry: Add area damage during Defense when several enemies are threatening your position.
- Berserk: Take it when you can deliberately carry Internal Damage without putting the run at lethal risk. It converts safely managed Internal Damage into more damage.
- Brutal Taming: Choose it when your first Ultimate is a major part of the run’s plan.
- Hardened Skin or Strong-Willed: Select one when survival, rather than damage, is limiting your uptime.
A current BuildMaker example named Def (Bold Strike) uses Unchained Beast, Bold Strike, Deafening Cry, Berserk, Giant Carp Suplex, Forest Spirits, Energy Discharge, Hardened Skin, Strong-Willed and Brutal Taming, alongside defensive and damage magical objects. That list demonstrates a coherent route; it is not evidence of a measured ranking.

- BANISH THE NIGHTMARE FROM YOUR REALM: The Nightmares are spreading within Reverie, corrupting everything in their path. You must hone your skills and find the strength to defeat the creatures of the Nightmare using unique hero abilities inspired by characters from folk tales and legends.
- DYNAMIC GAMEPLAY: To defeat the Nightmare and reach the final chapter, you will need a strong build, focus and excellent teamwork. Increase your fighting power in battles then face the level boss when you feel ready… or when you no longer have a choice.
- DARK TALES: The world of Reverie is built on old folk tales and legends. From the three little pigs to Norse mythology to One Thousand and One Nights, the best-known tales are revisited in a dark-fantasy style and add their timeless appeal to the atmosphere of Ravenswatch.
- HIGH REPLAY VALUE: Run after run, play as different heroes, make the most of the upgrades and items you find, and explore a randomly generated map with new activities and new enemies.

Combat sequence
- Approach mounted. Use Kuma’s mobility to choose the angle instead of walking into the center of a pack.
- Block the threatening hit. Defense and Roar give you a short protected window. Roar is especially valuable when several enemies are about to connect.
- Add area pressure. Use Deafening Cry during Defense when enemies are close enough for its area damage to matter.
- Cancel Defense with Attack. Press Attack at the cancel point to activate Bold Strike’s blocking finisher. This is the payoff, not an optional flourish.
- Reposition before Internal Damage snowballs. If Kuma has absorbed repeated hits, use Leap or remount movement to leave the danger zone rather than extending a low-health exchange.
- Spend Berserk deliberately. Let Internal Damage increase your output only when you still have a safe route through the next attack pattern. Do not treat the Talent as permission to absorb every hit.
When this build is best
Bold Strike fits players who prefer a visible defensive cue and a reliable finisher. It is strongest in melee spaces where enemies telegraph attacks and can be held in front of you. Deafening Cry gives the build a safer answer to groups; the defensive Talents keep one missed cancel from ending the run. The build is less attractive when you cannot create a clean Defense window or when the encounter constantly forces you to chase scattered targets.
Build 2: Power-to-Special burst with Crushing Combo
Crushing Combo improves Special shortly after Power, so the build is about timing rather than maintaining a long buff list. Trigger Power, then cast Special while the bonus is active. Mounted Charge is a natural way to start the sequence, but any reliable Power trigger can work.
Basic loop
- Group the targets. Use mounted movement, Charge or a teammate’s crowd control to keep enemies close enough that Special can hit more than one target.
- Trigger Power. Begin the combo with Charge or another Power activation that fits the encounter.
- Cast Special immediately. Crushing Combo rewards the short Power-then-Special interval, so do not spend the window on unnecessary movement.
- Exit after the burst. If the group survives, remount or use Leap rather than standing in the middle of the recovery animation.
This route becomes easier in co-op because allies can keep targets grouped while you perform the sequence. In solo play, choose a defensive or control option if the map makes it difficult to complete the two-step timing safely.
Object priorities
Favor area or cooldown magical objects when they are offered. Area effects increase the value of a successful grouped burst; cooldown support lets you reach the next Power window sooner. Shops and drops are random, so there is no fixed object list that every run can follow. Take a defensive object instead when your health pool is the limiting resource.

Alternative: Boomerang Axe for safer ranged pressure
Boomerang Axe is the practical alternative when you want to contribute damage without committing to every melee exchange. Its Power trigger throws a bouncing axe that can hit nearby enemies repeatedly. The bounce is most useful against clustered targets, where one activation can continue dealing damage as you reposition.
Use the Talent to soften a group while mounted, move to a safer angle, then dismount only when the remaining targets can be finished efficiently. It also gives co-op players a way to keep contributing while a teammate holds the frontline. Boomerang Axe generally gives up some of Bold Strike’s blocking-finisher identity and Crushing Combo’s direct burst, but it reduces the number of moments in which you must stand still in melee range.
Solo Kintarō: protect the shared health pool
Solo play magnifies the central rule: Kuma is not a disposable tank. Every hit Kuma takes becomes Internal Damage on Kintarō, so a route that looks safe because Kuma is in front can still leave you unable to survive the next encounter.

- Keep one defensive answer available. Hardened Skin, Strong-Willed, Deafening Cry or a comparable defensive offer helps preserve the health bar when the map is dangerous.
- Stay mounted for movement and control. Charge, Leap and Roar are the safest answers when the pack is spread out, projectiles are crossing the arena or you need to disengage.
- Dismount for a reason. Axe pressure, Whirl, Pound and Kuma’s automatic claws can end a compact pack quickly, but do not dismount merely because an enemy is nearby.
- Use Leap as an avoidance tool. Leap provides an intangible transition. Time it to pass through a dangerous attack instead of using it only as a gap closer.
- Delay Berserk when necessary. Berserk is attractive only when you can intentionally manage Internal Damage and still have a safe way to remount or leave the fight.
Solo decision table
| Situation | Preferred response | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Enemies are spread across a large area | Remain mounted and use Charge, Leap and Roar | Mobility prevents a long, damaging chase on foot |
| A tight group is committed to a telegraphed attack | Defense, Deafening Cry, then a Bold Strike cancel | You convert the incoming attack into a controlled damage window |
| A group is clustered but too dangerous to enter | Boomerang Axe or a Power-to-Special burst from the edge | You apply pressure before committing to melee |
| Internal Damage is already high | Stop extending the exchange; remount, Leap away or wait for a safer window | More absorbed damage directly threatens the shared bar |
These are tactical recommendations derived from the documented mechanics, not results from controlled solo testing. Your map route, drops and enemy pattern can make a defensive choice better than a nominally higher-damage option.

Co-op Kintarō: controller, initiator and burst partner
In online co-op, Kintarō can be a mobile controller who starts fights and makes targets predictable for the rest of the party. Use Kuma to line up Charge and Roar, hold enemies in a manageable space, then dismount for Axe pressure or a Defense-cancel finisher while allies attack the opening.
How to coordinate
- Call the engage. Tell teammates when Charge is about to connect so they can aim area attacks at the landing zone.
- Use Roar as a team signal. The short blocking window is most valuable when allies know they can attack safely while enemies are held in front of you.
- Group before bursting. Crushing Combo is easier to exploit when another player keeps targets together for the Power-to-Special sequence.
- Share responsibility for Internal Damage. Explain that Kintarō and Kuma share a health bar. Kuma is not an independent tank whose damage can be ignored.
- Plan remount windows. After a heavy exchange, create space for Kintarō to remount or reposition instead of demanding another immediate melee commitment.
Choose Bold Strike when the party needs a safe block and a controlled melee finisher. Choose Crushing Combo when teammates can reliably hold enemies in place. The official product listing confirms online co-op support, but it does not publish a required party composition or co-op tier list.
Choosing Talents around your Ultimate
Brutal Taming is the notable choice when your first Ultimate is central to the run. Take it when you already know the Ultimate will be used frequently enough to justify giving it a Talent slot; do not select it automatically at the expense of a defensive option in a dangerous solo map.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The same principle applies to the two Kintarō Ultimates generally: decide whether the run is being won by repeated control, a burst cycle or simply staying alive long enough to reach the next encounter. If your Ultimate creates the opening, Crushing Combo can capitalize on it. If your Ultimate lets you block or stabilize a melee exchange, Bold Strike can turn that safety into damage. The available object pool and your chosen Talent offers determine which interpretation is realistic in a particular run.

Magical objects and upgrade decisions
Because shops and drops are random, build around functions rather than a mandatory shopping list:
- Area support: increases the value of Deafening Cry, Special and bouncing axe hits when enemies are grouped.
- Cooldown support: helps you reach another Power, Special or control window sooner, which is especially useful for Crushing Combo.
- Damage support: complements Bold Strike or Berserk after your survival needs are covered.
- Defensive support: is often the correct solo purchase when Internal Damage is accumulating faster than you can safely manage it.
Do not force a damage object because it matches a guide’s example. A defensive object that preserves one additional encounter’s worth of health can produce more total damage over a run than a larger number attached to an attack you cannot safely complete.
Troubleshooting dropped combos
The Attack chain stops after using Trait
Version 1.06 patch notes report a known issue in which using Kintarō’s Trait can interrupt the Attack and break the Attack combo. If a sequence appears to fail even though your timing was consistent, avoid inserting Trait into the middle of the Attack chain and rebuild the sequence around a clean Defense-to-Attack cancel or a separate Power-to-Special window.
Internal Damage makes Berserk feel unsafe
Berserk is a damage scaler, not a substitute for mitigation. If activating it leaves you unable to survive the next telegraphed hit, move back to a defensive Talent, use Roar or Leap to create distance, and only carry Internal Damage when you have a clear exit.
Crushing Combo misses its payoff
The Talent improves Special shortly after Power. If you use Special too late, spend the interval repositioning through the group or trigger Power when enemies are scattered, the combo loses much of its value. Group targets first, activate Power, then cast Special without an unnecessary action between them.
Version 1.06 facts and limits
Kintarō’s DLC and Ravenswatch version 1.06 released on October 12, 2026. The update introduced Kintarō’s dual gameplay with Kuma, eight abilities, two Ultimates and 26 unlockable Talents, along with a broad Talent rework. Existing runs in progress were discarded when the update arrived, so older screenshots or build routes may not describe the current Talent layout.
The available official material establishes the character’s mechanics and the current known Trait-combo issue, but it does not establish a universal winning build, win-rate percentage or damage-per-second benchmark. Treat the routes above as practical frameworks: Defense-cancel damage, Power-to-Special burst, safer ranged pressure, solo survival or co-op control. Pick the framework that solves the problem your current run is actually presenting.
