For a gaming-first feature set, choose the KZ Gale; for an adjustable 3.5-mm setup, choose the KZ ZS10 Pro 2; and for a lower-cost first IEM, consider the KZ EDX Pro X. None can guarantee that you will hear every footstep. Positioning and quiet-cue clarity depend on the game’s mix and spatial processing, as well as fit, ear-tip seal, your hearing and listening settings.

Which KZ earphones suit your gaming setup?

Model Best for Drivers (KZ-listed) Connection and mic Tuning Main trade-off
KZ Gale Gaming-first features One super-linear driver per side USB-C DSP version or 3.5-mm version; dual microphones listed Four modes on the USB-C version DSP modes depend on buying the USB-C version; check device compatibility.
KZ ZS10 Pro 2 Competitive FPS with a conventional wired connection 10-mm dynamic driver and dual balanced-armature drivers per side 3.5 mm; mic and non-mic versions listed Four switches adjust bass or treble Needs experimentation; driver count does not establish better imaging.
KZ EDX Pro X Budget and casual gaming One dynamic driver per side 3.5 mm; inline mic listed No listed tuning controls Fewer features and less adjustment than the other picks.
KZ ZS10 Pro X Gaming plus detail-oriented music listening One dynamic driver and four balanced armatures per side 3.5 mm; inline mic listed Bright presentation described by KZ Treble may sound fatiguing to some listeners.
KZ ZS12 Pro X Enthusiast experimentation One 10-mm dynamic driver, dual-array balanced armatures and one customized balanced armature per side Detachable wired cable; microphone not stated on the cited product information No gaming-specific tuning control stated No established evidence that it improves positional accuracy over less complex models.
KZ Vader Pro Bass-forward, immersive listening Three dynamic drivers per side Detachable 2-pin cable; microphone not stated on the cited product information Separate drivers for bass, midrange and treble, per KZ Extra bass may mask subtle competitive cues.

KZ’s U.S.-facing gaming collection lists several of these products, but stock and prices change. The collection displayed sale prices of $59.90 for Gale, $99.90 for ZS10 Pro 2 and $49.90 for EDX Pro X during an August 2026 snapshot; these are not guaranteed current prices. Check the selected model, connector, mic variant and live price on the KZ gaming collection before ordering.

What matters for hearing footsteps?

Imaging is not the same as soundstage

Imaging is how convincingly an earphone places a sound in a direction or position. Separation is how well distinct sounds remain distinguishable when effects, voices and music overlap. Soundstage describes the perceived size of the space; a broad presentation alone does not prove precise directional placement. Detail retrieval and tonal balance also matter, but none of these qualities can be inferred from driver count or a frequency-range figure alone.

Balance bass and treble for your game

Bass can make explosions and vehicles satisfying, but strong low-frequency energy can compete with quieter cues. Dolby’s spatial-sound guidance notes that low-frequency content localizes less effectively than higher-frequency information. For competitive play, start with controlled bass rather than assuming more bass reveals more footsteps.

Clear upper mids and treble can help small transients stand out, but an overly bright sound can make gunfire harsh, voices sibilant and long sessions tiring. KZ describes the ZS10 Pro X as bright and detailed; that is a manufacturer characterization, not an independent gaming comparison. The ZS10 Pro 2’s treble-reduction switch is one way to test a less sharp presentation.

The game and platform create spatial processing

A passive IEM does not create surround sound on its own. Spatial systems use cues such as timing, level and filtering to simulate direction. Microsoft describes spatial sound as supporting surround and elevation cues through platform processing, while Dolby explains how game spatial audio can make sounds seem to originate at positions in space. See Microsoft’s spatial-sound overview and Dolby’s gaming documentation.

Best KZ models by use case

Best overall for gaming features: KZ Gale

The Gale is the clearest pick if gaming-specific features matter more than having conventional analog compatibility. KZ lists an over-ear fit, detachable 0.75-mm 2-pin cable, dual microphones and a proprietary single super-linear driver. The USB-C version adds a built-in DSP sound card with four audio modes; KZ also lists a 3.5-mm version. Those versions are not interchangeable in features, so confirm the connector before buying.

KZ markets the Gale for gaming and directional cues, but its claims of pinpoint positioning are not independently established by the cited product information. Choose it for the feature set, not as a guarantee of superior FPS imaging. If you need the broadest plug-and-play compatibility across controllers and consoles, a 3.5-mm option may be simpler.

Best adjustable 3.5-mm pick: KZ ZS10 Pro 2

The ZS10 Pro 2 combines a 10-mm dynamic driver, dual 31736 balanced-armature drivers and a three-way crossover, according to KZ. Its four switches offer practical tuning choices: switches 1, 2 and 3 add bass in successive levels, while switch 4 reduces treble by one level. All switches off is the basic setting. KZ does not provide a gaming-specific measured target curve, so treat the controls as a way to find a comfortable balance, not a guaranteed footstep preset.

  1. Begin with all switches off and use a familiar training area or sound test.
  2. If bass-heavy effects dominate, do not add bass. Try switch 4 only if the sound is harsh.
  3. If the presentation seems thin and quiet cues remain clear, test one bass switch.
  4. Compare settings at similar loudness, then keep the configuration that reveals cues without making gunfire fatiguing.

KZ lists a 3.5-mm plug, detachable 0.75-mm cable and mic and non-mic versions. Its cited specifications give impedance as 25–28 ohms, sensitivity as 108 ±3 dB and frequency range as 20–40,000 Hz. Those figures are manufacturer specifications, not proof of positional performance or identical loudness across devices.

Best budget entry: KZ EDX Pro X

The EDX Pro X is a straightforward option for a first IEM, casual play and voice chat. KZ lists one dynamic driver per side, a detachable 0.75-mm 2-pin cable, 3.5-mm plug and inline microphone with a single-button control. It has no listed DSP modes or tuning switches, so it is less configurable than the Gale or ZS10 Pro 2. Its simpler design is not evidence that it will image worse; it is simply a more basic feature set.

Best for detail and music crossover: KZ ZS10 Pro X

The ZS10 Pro X has one 10-mm dynamic driver and four balanced armatures per side—five drivers in each earpiece, not ten per earpiece. KZ describes its sound as clear, bright and detailed, and lists a 3.5-mm plug, detachable cable and inline microphone. It can suit someone who wants one IEM for games and music, but treble-sensitive listeners may prefer a less bright option. The driver configuration and advertised frequency range do not prove an advantage in locating footsteps.

Enthusiast and bass-oriented alternatives

The ZS12 Pro X is a more elaborate hybrid design, with a 10-mm dynamic driver, a dual-array of 31736 balanced armatures and a customized 30019 balanced armature per side; KZ lists foam ear tips. It may interest listeners who want to experiment with a more complex IEM, but the available specifications do not establish it as a gaming upgrade.

The Vader Pro uses three dynamic drivers per side, which KZ assigns to bass, midrange and treble. Its advertised range of approximately 5 Hz to 45 kHz is not evidence of better footstep audibility or positional accuracy. A bass-oriented sound may be enjoyable in cinematic games and music, yet less helpful when low-frequency effects crowd out subtle cues.

Connect the IEM to your platform

Using a 3.5-mm model

The EDX Pro X, ZS10 Pro X and ZS10 Pro 2 use 3.5-mm plugs. They can be convenient with a PC headphone jack, a handheld or a controller that supports analog audio. Compatibility is not guaranteed for every device: some desktop PCs separate headphone and microphone inputs, some need a headset splitter, and controller microphone support varies. Low-impedance, sensitive IEMs can also reveal hiss from some controllers, dongles or DACs.

Using the Gale USB-C DSP version

The USB-C version’s DSP modes and microphone features depend on that specific variant. USB-C audio and microphone support can differ among Windows PCs, phones, handhelds, console accessories and docks. Do not assume a USB-C plug guarantees compatibility with every console or phone; confirm support for the exact device, adapter and game. If USB-C audio is unavailable, use a compatible adapter or select the 3.5-mm version instead.

Set up audio for clear cues

  1. Connect the IEM to the controller, PC, handheld or compatible USB-C adapter, then select it as the output device.
  2. In the game, begin with headphone or stereo output and a known audio preset. Set dialogue, effects, music and voice chat separately where available.
  3. Test the game’s stereo mix first. If you enable Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos for Headphones or DTS Headphone:X, compare it against stereo rather than stacking it with another surround or binaural effect.
  4. Keep the mode that gives you the most reliable placement in that game. Spatial processing can alter sound or conflict with the game’s own HRTF implementation.
  5. Use the lowest practical volume that still makes cues clear. Do not turn up the level to compensate for poor fit or isolation.

Microsoft’s Spatial Sound documentation covers Windows Sonic for Headphones, DTS Headphone:X and Dolby Atmos as virtualization options. These are platform-level options; they do not replace the game’s own audio engine. Dolby’s gaming documentation provides further context.

Fit and troubleshooting

Weak bass, thin sound or inconsistent isolation

Check the seal before blaming the IEM. Try the included tip sizes, use the smallest one that seals without discomfort, and insert both sides consistently. Move your jaw and head to see whether the seal shifts. KZ lists three silicone-tip sizes with the Gale and ZS10 Pro X; the ZS10 Pro 2 description also lists foam tips. A suitable replacement tip can help if the supplied set does not fit, although tip bore and fit may change perceived sound.

Hiss or low output

Try a different output, dongle or controller if you hear hiss; sensitive IEMs can make source noise noticeable. If the level is low, check the device’s output selection and volume before raising the game mix. Published impedance and sensitivity figures are not guarantees of the same result on every source.

Microphone not working

Confirm that the selected cable or model actually includes a microphone, that the device recognizes the headset input, and that the game or operating system has microphone permission. A mic’s results depend on its cable, connector, placement, device input and software processing; the product listings do not establish broadcast-quality performance.

Harsh gunfire or muddy effects

If sharp effects become uncomfortable, try the ZS10 Pro 2 treble-reduction switch or choose a less bright model. If bass-heavy effects obscure quiet sounds, reduce bass in the game or with available tuning controls. Avoid solving either problem simply by increasing overall volume.

How to choose

  • Choose the Gale if gaming-first features, USB-C DSP presets and dual microphones are your priority, and the USB-C variant works with your device.
  • Choose the ZS10 Pro 2 if you want a wired 3.5-mm IEM and value adjustable bass and treble.
  • Choose the EDX Pro X if you want a simpler, lower-cost entry for casual play and chat.
  • Choose the ZS10 Pro X if bright detail for music matters alongside gaming and you are comfortable with treble-forward sound.
  • Consider the ZS12 Pro X or Vader Pro for their particular enthusiast or bass-oriented appeal, not because more drivers or a wider advertised frequency range guarantees better positioning.

For hearing safety during gaming and esports, the ITU-T’s H.872 recommendation addresses safe listening across PCs, consoles, handhelds, mobile devices, headphones and headsets. A good seal and sensible volume are better starting points than turning up the sound to overcome a poor fit.
