Usually, yes—but only with a charging cable made for your exact Nintendo DS model and a reputable USB power source. The original DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL do not all use the same charger. Don’t connect bare USB wires to the console or battery, and don’t assume a cable is compatible just because its plug fits.
Identify your Nintendo DS model first
Check the name printed on the handheld and the input marking beside its charging connector. Nintendo’s official instructions specify model-specific AC adapters; a USB cable is a third-party alternative, not a generic Nintendo-approved charging method.
| System | Input marking | Nintendo adapter reference | USB cable to look for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Nintendo DS | 5.2V IN | Original DS adapter for your region | Original-DS-specific cable |
| Nintendo DS Lite | 5.2V=IN | USG-002 in North America | DS Lite-specific cable |
| Nintendo DSi | 4.6V IN | WAP-002 in the United States | DSi-specific cable |
| Nintendo DSi XL | 4.6V IN | WAP-002 family | DSi/DSi XL-specific cable |
These markings and adapter references come from Nintendo’s original DS and DS Lite charging guidance, its DSi and DSi XL guidance, and its Japanese DS support information. Don’t buy a cable based only on a listing’s broad “Nintendo DS” label: the original DS, DS Lite and DSi-family charging accessories are not interchangeable by assumption.
What makes USB charging safe or unsafe?
USB describes the power source, not the whole charging system. In a normal setup, power travels from a USB port through a model-specific charging cable to the DS’s charging circuitry, which manages charging the battery. The cable must have the right connector and wiring for that console; the power source should be reputable and regulated; and the battery and console port must be in good condition.

Nintendo advises using accessories designed and licensed for the DS, inserting plugs carefully and straight, and not using damaged cables or adapters. Its health and safety guidance also warns against damaging or shorting the rechargeable lithium-ion battery. USB itself does not make an accessory safe.
Can you use a computer, phone charger or power bank?
Generally, a suitable model-specific USB cable can be powered by a standard computer USB port, a reputable USB wall charger or a power bank. A USB-A wall charger paired with a USB-A-to-DS cable is the least ambiguous arrangement. A car USB port may also supply power, but the same cable and battery checks apply. A charging cable may be power-only; don’t expect it to transfer data.
A charger’s maximum current or wattage is not automatically forced into the DS. For example, a charger marked 65 W describes its maximum capability under supported conditions, not a promise that the handheld receives 65 W. That does not make every charger-and-cable combination appropriate: wrong wiring, unsuitable voltage, poor regulation or incompatible USB-C behavior can still cause problems. Avoid arbitrary voltage converters and don’t treat “any phone charger works” as a safe rule.

Some power banks turn off when a device draws very little current. If charging stops, try a reputable wall source and compatible cable before concluding that the DS is faulty. Never keep using a setup if its plug or cable gets unusually hot, the connector is loose, or the console smells overheated.

USB-C needs extra caution
Stock DS-family consoles use proprietary charging connectors, not USB-C receptacles. A USB-C charger may work only as part of a compatible, documented cable arrangement; compatibility should not be assumed, especially with USB-C-to-USB-C cables. Prefer a USB-A output and a purpose-built DS cable if you cannot verify the exact USB-C setup.
A USB-C conversion kit is a hardware modification, not the same thing as charging an unmodified console with a model-specific USB cable. One DSi USB-C modification guide warns that its modified system may not charge from USB-C-to-USB-C and may need a USB-A charger or particular cable arrangement. That warning applies to that modification; it does not establish compatibility for every stock DS or aftermarket cable.

Choose a model-specific cable
Before buying a USB cable, check the listing and the physical connector rather than relying on product photos or a generic family name.
- It explicitly names your exact console: original DS, DS Lite, DSi or DSi XL.
- It identifies the USB input and the DS-side connector clearly.
- The maker or seller is identifiable and provides a return route.
- The plug fits straight and easily; it does not need to be forced or held at an angle.
- The cable has no exposed wires or visible damage and does not claim universal compatibility without explaining how the different connectors are handled.
A USB cable can be convenient and easier to find than an old proprietary wall adapter, but quality and compatibility vary. Nintendo’s UK guidance says third-party substitute chargers have not necessarily undergone Nintendo’s safety checks and damage caused by third-party chargers may not be covered by Nintendo’s warranty; that statement is specific to Nintendo’s UK guidance and should not be generalized to every region. See Nintendo’s regional power-supply information.

Older handhelds may have batteries with reduced capacity or other wear. Inspect the battery and charging setup before connecting power. Don’t charge a battery that is swollen, leaking, punctured, crushed, unusually hot, corroded or producing an abnormal odor. Nintendo says a battery exposed to liquid should not be reused.

Nintendo’s safety precautions cover battery and accessory hazards. Its warning about imitation batteries and adapters notes the risks associated with counterfeit accessories.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to expect while charging
Nintendo’s approximate charge times are for its specified adapters and depend on the starting charge. A USB source with limited output, or playing while charging, may take longer. Nintendo says the original DS takes about four hours and the DS Lite about three hours under its guidance; both can be charged while playing, although that takes longer. For the DSi and DSi XL, Nintendo gives an approximate two-to-three-hour range, depending on the remaining charge.
The charging light is not a simple failure indicator. For the original DS and DS Lite, Nintendo says the orange light goes out when charging is complete. For the DSi, the orange light should illuminate during charging and go out at full charge; a blinking light can indicate that the battery is installed incorrectly. Refer to Nintendo’s DS and DS Lite instructions and DSi and DSi XL instructions for model-specific details.

If your DS does not charge
- Verify the model. Read the console name and input marking, then confirm the cable is made for that model.
- Try a known-good cable and source. Use a compatible, undamaged cable with a reputable USB-A wall charger or computer port. Change one part at a time so you can identify what failed.
- Check the connection. Look for a loose plug, bent contacts, lint or corrosion. Insert the plug straight; do not force it or wiggle it to keep charging.
- Check the battery installation. If the battery has been removed, confirm it is seated correctly. On a DSi, a blinking orange light can indicate incorrect installation.
- Allow time if it has been stored. Nintendo recommends charging the original DS or DS Lite at least every six months during long periods of non-use. A long-unused battery may have degraded; do not repeatedly attempt charging if it shows any of the physical warning signs above.
- Stop if there are danger signs. Disconnect power if the battery swells or leaks, or if the console or cable heats unusually or smells abnormal. Do not reuse a battery exposed to liquid.
- Consider repair if the problem persists. A faulty cable, worn charging port, failed battery or internal charging circuit can produce similar symptoms. If multiple compatible cables and reputable sources fail, replacing the charger alone may not solve it.
Nintendo’s advice to charge the DS or DS Lite at least every six months appears in its charging guidance. For a console that needs service, use Nintendo Support or a qualified repair service.
USB cable or official Nintendo adapter?
| Option | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Correct Nintendo AC adapter | Owners who want the manufacturer-specified option for their model or adapter family | Less ambiguity about the intended connector and adapter; genuine units may be used or difficult to find, and regional mains compatibility still matters. |
| Reputable USB-A-to-model-specific cable | Owners who want to use a computer, power bank or USB wall charger | Convenient, but third-party cable quality and model compatibility vary; verify the exact console and USB arrangement. |
Nintendo’s official model-specific guidance refers to AC adapters, not generic USB cables. Its Japanese support page distinguishes the original DS and DS Lite adapter families from the DSi, DSi XL and 3DS family; regional versions and mains requirements matter, so check the adapter’s markings and local electrical compatibility. See Nintendo’s adapter-family information and its regional power-supply guidance.
