Short answer: If your gaming laptop is genuinely throttling after 20–60 minutes, start with a sealed-chamber turbofan pad such as the Llano V10/V12, IETS GT500/GT600, or Razer Laptop Cooling Pad—but only after confirming that your laptop has compatible bottom intake vents. For a warm laptop that is not losing clock speed, a simple rear lift or quieter open-fan pad is usually the better value.

The strongest cooling designs are also the loudest, largest, and most dependent on exact vent alignment. The best choice therefore depends on sustained temperatures, frame-time stability, laptop size, noise tolerance, portability, power requirements, and price—not the number of fans or an advertised RPM figure.

Cooling pads can improve airflow beneath a gaming laptop, but a lower temperature does not automatically mean higher FPS. The useful question is whether the laptop is thermally or power limited: if its CPU and GPU already maintain their intended clocks, a cooling pad may change temperatures while making little difference to games. If clocks, power draw, or 1% lows deteriorate as the laptop heats up, additional airflow can improve sustained performance.

There is also no reliable universal winner. The best current independent comparison found the Llano RGB and Llano V10 particularly effective on its test laptop, while quieter open-fan designs produced smaller thermal changes. That comparison did not include the Razer Laptop Cooling Pad or the IETS GT500 and GT600, so those products cannot honestly be ranked against the Llano models from that test alone.

Our current recommendations at a glance

These are evidence-based recommendations rather than a claim that VGSources has completed a single apples-to-apples laboratory comparison of every model. The measured figures below come from the linked independent testing, and product specifications come from manufacturers.

Best for Product or group Why consider it Main drawback
Maximum cooling potential Llano RGB or Llano V10 Lowest measured external-hotspot warming in TechRadar’s comparison; sealed turbofan airflow Extremely loud at maximum speed; test results came from one laptop and one workload
Severe thermal throttling IETS GT600, IETS GT500, or Llano V12 Foam-sealed pressure chambers and high-output turbofans designed for high-power laptops Requires compatible bottom intake vents, external power, and a desk
Premium or Razer Blade setup Razer Laptop Cooling Pad Adaptive control, Synapse 4 integration, magnetic seals, dust filter, and three USB-A hub ports $169.99 US as checked in August 2026; independent coverage describes it as loud and expensive
Quietest measured open-fan performance KLIM Ultimate or a current Tecknet model TechRadar measured 36 dB from the pad alone at head height Lower cooling potential than a sealed turbofan; verify the exact Tecknet model before buying
Portable budget cooling KLIM Wind $29.97 direct from KLIM, 730 g, four fans, two USB ports, and a five-year warranty Its measured cooling result was much weaker than the sealed turbofan designs
Mainstream adjustable stand Kootek Chill Mat 5 Four 70 mm fans, one 120 mm fan, independently selectable fans, and an adjustable stand Older general-purpose recommendation; current availability and gaming performance need checking
Large 17–19-inch gaming laptops IETS GT600 or Llano V12/V13 Designed for large chassis and high thermal loads Heavy, bulky, and very dependent on the laptop’s intake layout

What the strongest current test actually showed

TechRadar’s August 2, 2026 comparison tested cooling pads with an Acer Predator Helios 300 containing an RTX 3080. It used a 15-minute 3DMark Steel Nomad stress test, maximum fan settings, and a thermal camera. The most important measurement was how much the laptop’s hottest external point warmed during the test.

havit HV-F2056 Laptop Cooling Pad for 15.6-17 Inch Laptops, Black | Three quiet USB-powered fans circulate air below the laptop, two height settings improve viewing and typing comfort
  • Ultra-Portable: Slim, portable, and light weight allowing you to protect your investment wherever you go
  • Ergonomic Comfort: Doubles as an ergonomic stand with two adjustable height settings
  • Optimized for Laptop Carrying: The metal mesh provides your laptop with a stable laptop carrying surface
  • Ultra-Quiet Fans: Three ultra-quiet fans create a noise-free environment for you
  • Extra Usb Ports: Extra USB port and power switch design allows for connecting more USB devices. Warm Tips: The packaged cable is USB to USB connection. Type C connection devices need to prepare an Type C to USB adapter
Product Measured hotspot warming What that number means
Llano RGB 8°C The hottest measured external point rose by 8°C during that test
Llano V10 12°C The hotspot rose by 12°C during the same type of test
KLIM Ultimate 15.5°C A smaller rise than the open-fan budget models tested
KLIM Wind 19.5°C Useful airflow and elevation, but a substantially larger hotspot rise than the Llano models

Do not read 8°C as “8°C cooler.” It is a temperature-rise result, not a loaded-versus-loaded temperature reduction against a no-pad baseline. A proper cooling claim must state the sensor, workload, duration, ambient temperature, baseline, and whether it reports temperature drop or temperature rise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same TechRadar work also demonstrates why temperature rankings are not performance rankings. In a long-duration encoding test, the KLIM Ultimate improved the MacBook Air M5’s average encode rate from 2.52 to 2.77 frames per second and reduced the estimated completion time from 122 to 114 minutes. The Acer Predator Helios 300 showed essentially no meaningful change in the comparable test. A laptop can therefore get cooler without producing more frames or completing a workload faster.

The test is valuable because it includes thermal and noise measurements, but it is not a definitive gaming-laptop ranking. It used one Acer, one primary stress test, and maximum fan settings; it did not include the Razer Laptop Cooling Pad, IETS GT500, or IETS GT600.

Open-fan versus sealed-chamber cooling pads

Open multi-fan pads

Open pads typically use two to eight smaller fans beneath a metal or plastic mesh. They are generally USB powered, lighter, cheaper, and more tolerant of different laptop shapes. Air does not need to pass through a carefully matched perimeter seal, so they are the safer choice when the laptop’s vent pattern is unusual or not yet understood.

The trade-off is pressure and concentration. An open pad may move air around the bottom panel without forcing much of it through the laptop’s actual intake vents. That can still help by raising the chassis and improving clearance, but it is less likely to rescue a high-TDP gaming laptop that is already losing clock speed under sustained load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sealed-chamber turbofan pads

Sealed designs use a large centrifugal or turbofan assembly and foam or rubber around the laptop base. The seal concentrates airflow and creates more pressure beneath the laptop. That is why these pads are the serious candidates for high-power gaming machines with bottom intakes.

They also introduce the biggest compromises:

  • They can be dramatically louder than ordinary multi-fan stands.
  • They are heavier and usually intended for desk use.
  • Many require a wall adapter rather than laptop USB power.
  • The foam must line up with the laptop’s underside and intake vents.
  • A bad fit can leave much of the airflow unused or block an exhaust path.
  • Filters and foam need regular cleaning.

Fan count and RPM are not meaningful standalone rankings. A small fan spinning quickly is not automatically more effective than a larger fan spinning more slowly. Fan diameter, airflow, static pressure, the quality of the seal, motor power, filter restriction, and the laptop’s intake geometry matter more. For example, the IETS GT500 family lists versions ranging from 40.56 CFM and 29.2 mmH₂O to 51.25 CFM and 38.6 mmH₂O, while the Razer pad lists a 140 mm fan, up to 44.46 CFM, and up to 45.61 mmH₂O. Those figures describe different products and test conditions; they do not by themselves establish which pad cools a particular laptop best.

Best pure-cooling candidates: Llano RGB and Llano V10

The Llano RGB and V10 are the strongest current candidates when the priority is lowering chassis heat during a demanding, sustained workload and noise is secondary. TechRadar measured only 8°C of hotspot warming for the Llano RGB and 12°C for the Llano V10 in its Acer Predator Helios 300 test. The V10 was described as the second-best result in that comparison.

The manufacturer’s lineup places the V10 in the 13- to 17.3-inch class with a 4.72-inch turbofan listed at up to 3,500 RPM. The V12 is aimed at 15.6- to 19-inch laptops, weighs approximately 1.8 kg, and has three USB-A ports. The V13 is listed for 15.6- to 21-inch laptops and adds a dust-proof cotton filter. Llano also lists a V12 Ultra with smart software control and a three-port USB hub. Confirm the exact model, regional listing, and included power adapter before ordering because the lineup is a family rather than one universal specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Noise is the reason these models are not an automatic recommendation. TechRadar measured the Llano RGB at 71 dB from the pad alone at seated head height and the V10 at 64.5 dB. Those are maximum-setting figures, but they illustrate the basic trade-off: the cooling headroom comes with a conspicuous fan noise penalty. They are better suited to a desk, headphones, or a room where noise is not a concern than to a quiet office or shared bedroom.

Llano’s regional marketing also publishes a 44°C cooling-in-90-seconds claim for a V12 model. That is a manufacturer claim with conditions that are not presented in a directly comparable form to TechRadar’s hotspot-warming measurement. It should not be used to rank the V12 against other pads unless an independent test reproduces it.

Best for serious thermal throttling: IETS GT500, GT600, and Llano V12

Choose this group when the laptop’s performance visibly declines as it heats up, provided the intake geometry is compatible. These pads are designed around sealed foam chambers and concentrated airflow rather than simply blowing across the entire bottom panel.

GT500 version Maximum speed Air volume Wind pressure Power Hub or RGB
B0 4,200 RPM 40.56 CFM 29.2 mmH₂O 12 W None
V1 5,000 RPM 51.25 CFM 38.6 mmH₂O 12 W USB hub
S2 4,600 RPM 45.96 CFM 34.5 mmH₂O 18 W RGB
V2 5,000 RPM 51.25 CFM 38.6 mmH₂O 18 W USB hub and RGB

According to the official GT500 specifications, the stand is designed for 13- to 17.3-inch laptops, measures 400 × 312 × 70 mm, weighs approximately 1.13–1.15 kg, offers seven height levels, uses detachable seal foam, and includes a dust filter. IETS says the GT500 requires bottom cooling or ventilation openings and that current GT500/GT600 models require wall power. Buy by exact version, not simply by the GT500 name.

IETS GT600

The GT600 is the more appropriate IETS candidate for a large gaming laptop. IETS lists support for 14.1- to 19.3-inch machines, a 5.5-inch turbofan, 1,600–2,800 RPM depending on version, and up to 71.9 mmH₂O wind pressure on higher versions. It measures 400 × 312 × 70 mm and weighs approximately 2.86 lb. It has magnetic sealed foam, a removable dust filter, and three USB 2.0 ports on V1/V2 versions.

The GT600’s size label does not guarantee a good fit. IETS specifically recommends it for laptops with bottom ventilation and side exhausts, and does not recommend it where there is no bottom ventilation, where bottom openings are exhausts, or for ordinary lap use. A 19-inch laptop may physically rest on the stand while still having intake vents outside the pressure chamber.

Llano V12

The V12 belongs on the shortlist for 15.6- to 19-inch high-power laptops. Its approximately 1.8 kg mass, 5.5-inch turbofan design, three USB-A ports, and sealed approach make it a desk-oriented accessory. The V12 should be compared with the GT600 on actual fit, sustained clock speeds, noise, and price rather than selected from the advertised fan specifications alone.

Is the $169.99 Razer Laptop Cooling Pad worth it?

The Razer Laptop Cooling Pad was listed at $169.99 in the US when checked in August 2026. It supports 14- to 18-inch laptops and includes a 140 mm high-velocity fan rated up to 3,000 RPM, up to 44.46 CFM, and up to 45.61 mmH₂O wind pressure. Razer also lists magnetic memory-foam seals, an intake mesh filter, three USB-A 2.0 hub ports, a 1.6 kg weight, a two-year warranty, and a 12 V / 3 A / 36 W power supply. Fan control and custom curves are available through Razer Synapse 4.

Its strongest reason to exist is not merely the fan. Compatible Razer Blade owners can use HyperBoost to unlock higher power limits. Razer’s current HyperBoost page lists the Blade 16 (2023 and 2024) with RTX 4060–4090, the Blade 16 (2025) with RTX 5080–5090, and the Blade 16 (2026) with RTX 5070 Ti–5090. However, a Razer support FAQ updated February 27, 2026 still lists only the 2023–2025 Blade 16 models. Check the current compatibility list and the behavior of Synapse before treating 2026 support as settled.

For a supported Blade owner who wants the hub, software control, magnetic frames, and possible higher power limits, the premium can be easier to justify. For a non-Razer laptop, it becomes a conventional premium sealed cooler competing with IETS and Llano designs that may offer more raw airflow per dollar. Windows Central’s independent review found it effective over long workloads but loud and expensive, and emphasized that it is not a magic FPS upgrade.

Razer advertises an up-to-16°C cooling figure in its specifications, but the footnote says those results came from Razer’s technical team in 2024. Treat that as a manufacturer claim, not an independent benchmark.

Best quieter and more portable choices

KLIM Ultimate and Tecknet

TechRadar measured the KLIM Ultimate at 36 dB from the pad alone at head height and 44.4 dB with the laptop running. A Tecknet model in the same comparison measured 36 dB alone and 45 dB combined. That makes them the quietest measured candidates in that particular comparison, although the laptop’s own fans remain part of the real gaming noise.

These are better fits for shared rooms, offices, and users who want modest cooling without a high-pitched turbofan. They are not the first choice for a 200 W-class gaming laptop that is already thermal throttling. Verify the exact Tecknet model, dimensions, and availability because the comparison does not establish that every current Tecknet pad has the same design or performance.

KLIM Wind

The KLIM Wind is the value and portability candidate. KLIM lists a US direct price of $29.97, four fans, a 730 g weight, dimensions of 40.1 × 27.2 × 3.1 cm, two USB ports, a five-year warranty, and official compatibility from 11 to 17.3 inches. The product copy says larger 18- and 19-inch laptops can remain stable while extending beyond the edges, but that is not the same as a complete sealed fit.

KLIM lists fan speed up to 1,200 RPM; its technical help page gives a measured figure closer to 1,100 RPM ±10%. TechRadar measured 19.5°C of hotspot warming and 36.2 dB pad-only noise at head height. KLIM’s official page lists noise up to 26 dB, while the independent measurement was higher. That does not necessarily mean either figure is wrong: distance, ambient noise, equipment, and operating conditions differ. For comparisons, the independent measurements made under a common method are more useful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Wind is a sensible inexpensive stand with active airflow, but it should not be sold as a solution for severe high-TDP throttling. Its advantages are weight, price, simplicity, and warranty—not maximum static pressure.

Kootek Chill Mat 5

TechRadar’s 2025 general cooling-pad guide selected the Kootek Chill Mat 5 as its overall pick. It lists four 70 mm fans plus one 120 mm fan, independently selectable fans, an adjustable stand, and dimensions of 380 × 300 × 35 mm.

It remains a useful open-fan benchmark for an adjustable stand, but an older broad-market recommendation should not automatically become the best 2026 gaming pad. Check current availability and price, then compare it with a passive rear lift and newer sealed models if the laptop is a high-power gaming machine.

Does your laptop need bottom intake vents?

This is the most important compatibility check for a sealed pad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Shut the laptop down and turn it over.
  2. Identify every intake and exhaust opening. Intakes may be on the bottom, sides, rear, or keyboard deck.
  3. Look for fan grilles and large perforated sections, but do not assume every opening is an intake.
  4. Compare the laptop’s vent pattern with the cooling pad’s pressure chamber and foam perimeter.
  5. Confirm that the pad does not cover rear or side exhaust ports.
  6. Check that the laptop’s feet and thickness allow the foam to make a useful seal.

A sealed turbofan works best when its pressure chamber feeds a real intake area. If the laptop has no bottom intakes, external airflow may only cool the bottom cover. Razer supplies an adjustable frame intended for fanless or ventless laptops, but that does not mean a fan can effectively cool internal components without a meaningful airflow path. IETS is more explicit: its GT600 guidance says not to use it with laptops that lack bottom ventilation or whose bottom openings serve as exhausts.

When the airflow design is uncertain, choose an open pad or passive stand instead of forcing a sealed chamber onto the machine.

Noise: what is acceptable in a shared room?

Cooling-pad noise measurements are only useful when distance and operating mode are stated. The following figures were taken by TechRadar at seated head height. They are not directly comparable with manufacturer claims recorded at an unspecified distance.

Product Pad alone Laptop plus pad
Llano RGB 71 dB 64 dB
Llano V10 64.5 dB 57.5 dB
KLIM Mistral 52.6 dB 51.5 dB
Liangstar 45 dB 45 dB
KLIM Wind 36.2 dB 44 dB
KLIM Ultimate 36 dB 44.4 dB
Tecknet 36 dB 45 dB

The combined result can be higher or lower than the pad-only result depending on measurement position and the interaction between the two fan systems; it should not be interpreted as a universal acoustic law. The practical conclusion is simpler: the strongest sealed pads can be plainly audible, while the quieter open-fan models are less intrusive but offer less thermal headroom.

A good comparison should measure each model at low, medium, and maximum settings, and should compare products at equal cooling levels rather than only at maximum speed. A 70 dB result may show that a cooler can move a great deal of air, but it does not make that cooler a good recommendation for an office.

Do you need a dedicated power adapter?

Check the power arrangement before buying. High-output turbofan stands commonly need more power than a laptop USB port is intended to provide.

  • Razer: uses a 12 V / 3 A / 36 W supply.
  • IETS GT500 and GT600: IETS says current models require a wall charger.
  • Llano V12: marketed with a 36 W dedicated power adapter.
  • Ordinary open-fan pads: commonly run from USB, often with a pass-through port or small hub.

Do not assume that a USB-powered pad is ineffective; it may be exactly adequate for a thin laptop that only needs extra clearance. Conversely, do not assume that a pad’s USB hub can charge a phone or laptop. Check whether ports are merely USB 2.0 data or power passthrough, and count how many laptop ports the cooler consumes.

Will a cooling pad increase FPS?

Sometimes, but only when heat is limiting performance. A proper gaming test should report:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Average FPS and 1% lows.
  • Frame-time consistency.
  • CPU and GPU clock speeds.
  • GPU power draw and CPU package power.
  • CPU, GPU, and hotspot temperatures.
  • Whether clocks or power decline during a 30- to 60-minute session.

If the laptop already maintains its full clocks and power target, expect a small or negligible FPS change. If it is dropping clocks or power as temperatures rise, a pad may improve sustained performance or frame-time stability. A temperature reduction alone does not prove that gaming performance improved.

A cooler laptop can also remain at the same FPS because the game is GPU-limited for another reason, the firmware maintains a fixed power ceiling, the workload is too short, or the measured sensor is not the component imposing the limit.

Cooling pad versus simply raising the laptop

Every meaningful comparison should include a passive stand or a simple rear lift. Raising the back of a laptop can create much of the benefit by opening the bottom intake path, without adding fan noise, dust intake, cost, or a power adapter.

Dell, HP, and Lenovo all recommend using laptops on hard, flat surfaces, keeping vents clear, and avoiding soft surfaces. Dell’s overheating guidance also covers cleaning vents, updating BIOS and drivers, and checking thermal or power profiles. If a passive lift produces nearly the same clocks, FPS, and temperatures as a powered pad, it is the better value for that laptop.

How a reliable gaming cooling-pad test should be run

Because results depend heavily on the chassis, a definitive “best” list needs more than one laptop and a single temperature reading.

Test systems

Use at least a thick 16- or 18-inch high-TDP gaming laptop with a discrete GPU, a thinner 14- or 15-inch gaming laptop, and, if possible, a machine with unusual intake placement or mostly rear and side ventilation. Record the exact configuration, CPU, GPU, BIOS and driver versions, Windows version, power mode, laptop dimensions, weight, room temperature and humidity, bottom-vent layout, and whether the pad forms a complete seal.

Controls and workloads

Each laptop should be tested flat on a hard desk, on a passive stand or rear lift, and on every powered pad. Test low, medium, and maximum fan settings where available, and repeat with and without RGB if lighting changes power or fan behavior.

Use a repeatable synthetic test such as 3DMark Steel Nomad or Time Spy, then add a real game loop lasting at least 30 minutes—preferably 45–60 minutes. Record the time to thermal equilibrium, temperatures, sustained clocks, package power, FPS, 1% lows, frame-time consistency, and any thermal- or power-limit events. TechRadar’s 15-minute Steel Nomad procedure is a useful reproducible baseline, but a gaming-focused comparison needs the longer game loop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Noise and repeatability

Measure the pad alone and the laptop-plus-pad combination at the same distance, including approximately 3 inches and seated head height. Run every condition at least three times, allow the laptop to return to a consistent starting temperature, and publish the average or median together with the run-to-run spread. Do not compare results from different laptops as though they were interchangeable.

Fit and usability

A review should document whether the laptop slides forward, whether the foam touches the display hinge, whether the seal covers the intakes, whether exhaust ports are blocked, whether the chassis overhangs the pad, whether the hub works as advertised, whether a wall adapter is needed, whether typing is comfortable, and whether the stand is stable on a desk. It should also weigh the pad and adapter together and check how easily filters can be removed and cleaned.

Choose by laptop size and use case

Your laptop or priority Best starting point What to verify
14-inch thin gaming laptop Passive lift, KLIM Ultimate, or an appropriately sized open pad Actual chassis dimensions and whether the fans line up with intake vents; do not assume a large sealed chamber will fit
16-inch gaming laptop Razer, Llano V10, GT500, or a large open pad depending on thermal load Bottom intake placement, rear exhaust clearance, and whether the foam perimeter fits
17-inch or 17.3-inch laptop GT500, Llano V10, or a suitable large open pad Full support area and exact GT500/V10 version
18-inch laptop GT600, Llano V12/V13, or another genuinely large stand Usable surface and vent coverage, not just the diagonal-size marketing label
19-inch laptop GT600 or Llano V12/V13 Whether the vents sit inside the chamber; a laptop can be stable while still overhanging or missing the seal
Shared room or office KLIM Ultimate, Tecknet, KLIM Wind, or passive elevation Combined laptop-plus-pad noise, not pad-only marketing figures
Severe thermal throttling Sealed turbofan, if the vent layout is compatible Clock speed, package power, 1% lows, filter maintenance, and wall power

What to do if the laptop is already overheating

If temperatures are abnormal during light use, or the system is shutting down, a cooling pad should not be the first and only fix. It can mask a failing fan or blocked heatsink while the underlying problem worsens.

  1. Move the laptop to a hard, flat surface. Do not use a bed, blanket, carpet, or lap as the regular gaming surface.
  2. Inspect and clean the vents. Dust can restrict both intake and exhaust airflow. Clean the cooling pad’s removable filter as well.
  3. Check the internal fans. A fan that does not spin, rattles, or never reaches its expected speed needs service.
  4. Update BIOS, firmware, drivers, and control software. Dell specifically includes these steps in its overheating guidance.
  5. Check the laptop’s thermal or performance profile. Maximum performance modes can raise power and fan noise substantially; a balanced mode may prevent unnecessary heat.
  6. Check background processes. Malware scans, updates, browser tabs, and other sustained CPU activity can look like a cooling failure.
  7. Consider internal service. Poor heatsink contact or degraded thermal interface material may require professional repair, particularly on an older laptop or one still under warranty.

A pad cannot replace a repaired fan, a clean heatsink, proper firmware, or a suitable surface. If the machine is merely warm but stable, a passive stand may be sufficient. If it is losing clocks after a long game, then test a compatible sealed turbofan against that passive lift.

Common mistakes and edge cases

Using a sealed pad with exhaust vents on the bottom

Do not force air into an exhaust path. Confirm the airflow direction before attaching foam or increasing fan pressure.

Blocking rear exhaust

Orient the laptop so hot air can leave freely. A pad that covers a rear exhaust can increase temperatures even if its own fan is powerful.

Assuming a lower CPU temperature means a cooler keyboard

An external pad can change the laptop’s internal fan curve and airflow distribution. Check component sensors and surface temperatures separately. The keyboard or palm rest may not cool in the same proportion as the CPU or GPU.

Magnets causing sleep mode

Razer acknowledges that some laptops place magnetic sensors close to the cooling pad’s magnetic frames. If the laptop sleeps when placed on the pad, use the adjustable positioning tab and move the laptop to a different position, as described in Razer’s support article.

Dust intake

High-airflow pads can move more dust toward a laptop. A removable filter is useful, but it is not the same as complete dust exclusion. Clean it regularly; a clogged filter itself becomes an airflow restriction. An unfiltered pad is not automatically dangerous, but it demands more attention to the laptop’s vents and surroundings.

Using a cooling pad on a lap

Large turbofan stands are designed for a stable desk and may be uncomfortable or unsafe to use on a lap. A cooling pad also does not make a soft surface safe if the laptop’s underside or the pad’s intake becomes obstructed.

Bottom line

For the largest possible thermal improvement, investigate the Llano RGB/V10, IETS GT500, IETS GT600, and Llano V12—but verify bottom-intake compatibility and accept that the most powerful options can be very loud and desk-bound. The Llano models have the strongest measured thermal evidence in the current comparison, while the IETS and larger Llano designs are serious candidates for high-TDP machines that need pressure and a sealed fit.

The Razer Laptop Cooling Pad is a premium convenience product, not an automatic performance winner. At $169.99, its value depends on whether Synapse control, the three-port hub, magnetic frames, and supported Blade HyperBoost features matter to you. For a laptop that is warm but not throttling, start with a passive rear lift or a quieter open-fan pad such as the KLIM Ultimate, Tecknet, KLIM Wind, or Kootek Chill Mat 5. And if the laptop overheats at light loads, diagnose and service the machine before buying more airflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cooling pads increase gaming FPS?

They can when the laptop is thermally or power limited and begins dropping CPU or GPU clocks during a long session. If the laptop already maintains its normal clocks and power target, FPS may barely change even if temperatures fall. Check average FPS, 1% lows, frame times, clocks, power, and temperatures together.

Are six-fan cooling pads better than one turbofan?

Not necessarily. Fan count and RPM do not measure the effectiveness of a cooling pad by themselves. A sealed turbofan may create more useful static pressure through a compatible laptop intake, while an open multi-fan pad may be quieter and more tolerant of different chassis designs.

Does a gaming laptop need bottom vents for a sealed cooling pad?

Usually, yes. A sealed pad needs a meaningful intake path beneath the laptop. Check the airflow design first, because some bottom openings are exhausts. IETS specifically warns against using the GT600 with laptops that lack bottom ventilation or use their bottom openings as exhausts.

Can a cooling pad damage a laptop?

Normal use on a suitable hard surface should not damage a laptop, but an incompatible pad can block an exhaust, force air against the wrong opening, or trigger a magnetic sleep sensor. Powerful unfiltered pads also require regular dust and filter maintenance.

Do cooling pads reduce laptop fan noise?

Sometimes, but not automatically. If extra airflow lets the laptop’s internal fans run more slowly, total noise may fall. A powerful turbofan can instead make the system louder overall. Compare laptop-plus-pad noise at the same performance level, not just the cooler’s advertised noise.

Do I need a wall adapter for a gaming-laptop cooling pad?

High-output sealed models commonly require one. The Razer pad uses a 36 W, 12 V / 3 A supply, and IETS says current GT500 and GT600 models require wall power. Many ordinary open-fan pads use laptop USB power, but check whether their hubs are data ports or charging-capable passthroughs.

Is a passive laptop stand enough?

It can be. Raising the rear of the laptop often improves bottom clearance without adding noise, dust intake, cost, or a power adapter. Test a passive lift as a control before buying a powered pad, particularly if the laptop is warm but not losing clock speed.

Is Razer HyperBoost available on every Razer laptop?

No. Razer lists HyperBoost support for specific Blade 16 generations and GPU configurations, and its current compatibility pages have conflicting information about 2026 models. Check Razer’s current HyperBoost page, support FAQ, and Synapse behavior for the exact laptop before paying the premium.

Should I buy a cooling pad if my laptop overheats at idle?

Not as the first step. Clean the vents, check the fans, update BIOS and drivers, inspect background processes, and review the thermal profile. Persistent overheating at light loads can indicate a blocked heatsink, failed fan, poor heatsink contact, or another service issue that a pad will only mask.

The Bottom Line

Buy for the problem you actually have: a compatible sealed turbofan for sustained thermal throttling, a quiet open pad or passive lift for modest heat, and no cooling pad as a substitute for repairing a laptop that overheats at idle. The Llano models currently have the strongest independent thermal evidence, but the IETS GT500/GT600 and Razer pad can be better fits for particular laptop sizes, vent layouts, software ecosystems, and budgets.
