The reliable approach is to choose a game mode first, make the active mode agree with the server’s allowed-mode list, use campaign difficulty words only where they apply, and treat modded features such as extra campaign players as plugin work rather than a console-variable tweak. Because command registration and launch behavior can change with game patches, verify every variable with the current build’s cvarlist before putting it in a production server.
Use this decision table first
These are the settings that matter most for a custom game. The table separates what the community documentation consistently reports from options that remain disputed or build-dependent.

What to decide before editing a configuration
Choose the mode you actually want to run
Write down whether the server is for Campaign, Versus, Scavenge, Survival, or a mutation/custom mode. The mode choice affects which settings are meaningful. A campaign difficulty command is not a general-purpose difficulty switch, and a plugin that adds human slots changes the rules far more than a normal server variable.
Identify who controls the server
- Self-hosted or dedicated installation: you can edit the configuration files and launch parameters directly, then restart the server.
- Managed game-server panel: the provider may expose separate fields for a startup command, a configuration file and workshop/plugin management. A panel field may write to a different file than the one you edit over FTP.
- Local listen server: client-side console access and launch options may differ from a dedicated server. Test in a private lobby before inviting players.
Record the game build and configuration location
Console variables can be added, removed or changed by patches, server frameworks and plugins. Keep a dated copy of the working server.cfg, startup command and plugin list. When a setting stops working, you need to know whether the game changed or a plugin overwrote the value.

How game mode selection works
sv_gametypes: the allowed-mode list
Community guides describe sv_gametypes as the list of game types the server permits. If the active mode is not present in that list, the server can ignore the intended selection or expose unexpected voting behavior. Treat the two variables as a pair: the value you select for mp_gamemode should also appear in sv_gametypes.
mp_gamemode: the active mode
mp_gamemode is the setting most often associated with choosing the active mode. The unresolved issue is where it should be applied. One community report says putting it in the server configuration prevents players from voting into another mode. A hosting guide instead shows a startup argument such as +mp_gamemode versus, while other reports apply it through SourceMod with sm_cvar mp_gamemode. These are conflicting reports, not three universally interchangeable methods.
Use the following safe workflow rather than copying one method blindly:

cvarlist mp_gamemodeandcvarlist sv_gametypesafter the server has fully started. Confirm that both names exist in the current build. - Check the provider’s startup documentation to see whether launch-line variables are accepted. If the panel rewrites startup arguments, a value in
server.cfgmay be the only persistent option available. - Set one method at a time, restart, and inspect the live values. Do not place contradictory values in the launch line, configuration file and plugin settings.
- Join with a test account and attempt the normal vote flow. A mode that appears correct at startup but changes after a map transition is being overridden somewhere.
Do not describe a mode as “locked” merely because the first map starts correctly. Confirm it after a map change and after a player vote.
When a mode will not start
- Check that the spelling and capitalization of the selected value match the value accepted by the server.
- Check that the same value is included in
sv_gametypes, if that variable is present in your build. - Search startup logs for a plugin or panel script that writes a different value later in the boot process.
- Remove duplicate declarations and restart. Testing with one known-good setting is faster than debugging several overrides at once.
Campaign difficulty: use word values, then verify
The commonly reported command
Most community guides set campaign difficulty with z_difficulty and one of four words: Easy, Normal, Hard or Impossible. One guide identifies Normal as the default. Because the individual entry was not confirmed against the current Valve command index, verify the accepted spelling and whether the change applies immediately or on the next map.
- Start a private campaign server.
- Run
cvarlist z_difficultyand note the current value and flags. - Apply one documented word value, such as
Normal, through the server console or the provider’s configuration field. - Start or reload a campaign and confirm the result in-game. Record whether a restart or map transition was required.
- Only then place the value in the persistent configuration.
Why a numeric difficulty setting is a warning sign
One hosting document lists a numeric mp_difficulty range of 0–3, but that format was not independently confirmed. Do not replace the word-based campaign command with numeric values simply because a control panel offers a numeric field. First establish that the variable exists in your server and that its numeric mapping is documented for the same game build. If cvarlist mp_difficulty returns nothing, the field is not controlling the game.
Difficulty outside Campaign
Non-campaign modes are not reliably controlled by the campaign difficulty console variable. In Versus and other modes, test the actual ruleset and infected behavior after each change instead of assuming that z_difficulty carries over. If your community needs a competitive difficulty policy, document the map, mode and plugin configuration that enforce it; do not advertise a single stock cvar as a guaranteed solution.

Self-hosted setup: a cautious configuration procedure
Step 1: Make a reversible backup
Copy the current server.cfg, startup script and any SourceMod configuration before editing. Give the copy a date and keep it outside the live server directory. A broken variable can prevent a clean start, while a plugin can silently rewrite a value after startup.
Step 2: Discover the variables in the running build
Use the server console to query each name before adding it permanently:
cvarlist mp_gamemode
cvarlist sv_gametypes
cvarlist z_difficulty
cvarlist mp_difficulty
cvarlist sv_consistency
The output tells you whether the command is registered. It does not, by itself, prove that a value is valid for every mode, so test the behavior separately.
Step 3: Apply one mode configuration
For a mode such as Versus, test the commonly reported launch-line form +mp_gamemode versus only if your server software accepts launch arguments. If you instead use a configuration-file declaration, use the exact syntax accepted by your build and panel. Do not run both approaches with different values.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep 4: Add the matching allowed-mode value
If sv_gametypes is registered, include the selected mode in its allowed list according to the syntax shown by your server’s command help. A list that omits the active mode is a common cause of “gametypes not working” reports.
Step 5: Set campaign difficulty only for a campaign test
Add the verified word value for z_difficulty, launch a short campaign, and confirm the result. Remove the line while testing Versus or another mode so that an old campaign setting does not create false conclusions.
Step 6: Restart and test a map transition
Check the console immediately after startup, then change maps and repeat the checks. A value that survives startup but not a transition is being reset by a map configuration, vote, panel script or plugin.

Managed hosting: where settings commonly get lost
Separate the three control surfaces
Most managed panels expose some combination of:
For a managed Left 4 Dead 2 server, Godlike.Host provides a Pterodactyl-based game panel with a configuration editor, task scheduler, sub-user permissions and SFTP/FTP access.
- Startup or command-line settings: values prefixed with a plus sign may be applied before the game loads.
- Server configuration editor: persistent commands written to
server.cfgor a provider-specific file. - Plugin and workshop controls: SourceMod, MetaMod and add-on files that can execute commands after the base server starts.
Ask the host which surface has priority. If a panel regenerates the startup command on every restart, a hand-edited script may be replaced. If a plugin executes sm_cvar mp_gamemode, it can override a value that looked correct in the base file.
Use the panel’s live console
After saving a setting, read the live value in the console rather than trusting a green “saved” message. Capture the startup log and the output of the relevant cvarlist commands. This gives you evidence to send to support when a setting is ignored.
More than four human players in Campaign
Stock Campaign is built around four survivor players. Community documentation indicates that adding additional human slots requires both SourceMod and MetaMod plus plugins designed for the feature. There is no single stock cvar that safely turns a normal campaign into a larger human lobby.
Plan the plugin stack
- Install versions of MetaMod and SourceMod compatible with the server’s current game build.
- Choose a maintained multi-player plugin whose documentation states how survivor slots, bot replacement and map transitions are handled.
- Test with one additional player before inviting a full group. Extra slots can affect director pacing, spawn logic, versus balance and plugin compatibility.
- Keep a recovery path: know how to disable the plugin from the server console or file system if the server crashes during map load.
Set expectations for players
Extra-player campaigns are modded games, not a hidden “official” setting. Tell players which add-ons are required, whether connecting clients need downloads, and which maps have been tested. A configuration that works on one campaign may fail on another because of map scripts or plugin assumptions.
Custom content and sv_consistency
sv_consistency is often mentioned when custom maps, models or scripts are involved, but the available documentation describes its values and effects inconsistently. No single value can be presented as a verified universal solution for custom games.
Use a controlled test instead:
- Run the stock game with the consistency setting at its current default.
- Add one custom map or add-on and test connection, map load and transition.
- Read the server console for consistency errors and note the exact file named.
- Change only the consistency setting documented for your build, then repeat the same test.
- Restore the previous value if the change permits incompatible files or creates new errors.
Do not disable consistency globally just to hide a mismatch. A targeted fix for a known add-on is easier to audit and less likely to let incompatible clients join.

Do some commands require developer mode?
The Valve console-command index notes that some commands require developer mode, enabled through the -dev launch option. That note does not mean every server variable in this guide needs -dev. Check the command’s flags in your current build. If a command is unavailable, first determine whether it is developer-only, server-only, protected, or simply absent after a patch. Avoid adding -dev to a public server without understanding the logging and debugging implications.
Reliable test checklist
- Confirm the intended mode and whether it is Campaign or a non-campaign mode.
- Run
cvarlistfor every variable before editing the persistent file. - Ensure the active mode agrees with the allowed-mode list where both variables are available.
- Test campaign difficulty with a word value and record whether a restart or map change is required.
- Do not infer non-campaign difficulty from the campaign result.
- Check the live value after startup and again after a map transition.
- Test player voting to determine whether the mode is actually enforced.
- For more than four campaign players, verify SourceMod, MetaMod and the selected plugin separately.
- For custom content, change one consistency-related setting at a time and keep logs.
- Keep a known-good backup and a documented rollback procedure.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The server starts in the wrong mode | The launch line, configuration file and plugin specify different values, or the variable is not registered. | Run cvarlist mp_gamemode, remove duplicate declarations, then test one method after a full restart. |
| A vote changes the mode | The mode was selected at startup but not enforced, or the allowed list permits the voted mode. | Verify the relationship between mp_gamemode and sv_gametypes; treat “server.cfg locks it” as a community report, not a guaranteed behavior. |
| Campaign difficulty appears unchanged | The word value is misspelled, the command was applied in the wrong mode, or the change requires a new map. | Query z_difficulty, apply one accepted word, start a fresh campaign and record when the value takes effect. |
| A numeric difficulty field does nothing | The panel exposes an unconfirmed mp_difficulty field that is absent or unsupported in the current build. |
Check cvarlist mp_difficulty; use only a documented variable that returns a live value. |
| Extra campaign players cannot connect | No compatible slot-management plugin is installed, or SourceMod/MetaMod failed to load. | Check plugin load logs and test the multi-player plugin on a private server before changing stock cvars. |
| Custom maps produce consistency errors | The add-on contains files that do not match the server/client expectations. | Identify the named file, test the add-on alone, and change consistency behavior only with build-specific documentation. |
| A setting works until the next map | A map config, vote, panel script or plugin reapplies another value. | Compare console output before and after transition and locate the later writer. |
Practical configurations by use case
Small private Campaign group
Use the stock four-player structure, set and verify z_difficulty with a word value, and avoid unnecessary plugins. This is the easiest configuration to keep stable across updates.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Private Versus server
Set the intended mode through the launch or configuration method your build accepts, ensure the allowed-mode list agrees, and test voting after a map transition. Do not rely on the campaign difficulty command to define Versus difficulty.
Large modded Campaign
Start with a clean server, install compatible MetaMod and SourceMod versions, add one extra-player plugin, and test every campaign you plan to host. Keep custom-content consistency at the tested value rather than copying an unverified recommendation.
Managed server shared by several groups
Document ownership of the startup command, configuration file and plugin directory. Use a change log so one group does not overwrite another’s mode or difficulty policy, and collect live-console output whenever a panel setting fails.
Bottom line for 2026
The most dependable custom-game setup is conservative: select one mode, make mp_gamemode and sv_gametypes agree when those variables are available, verify campaign difficulty through z_difficulty, and confirm behavior after map transitions. Treat launch-line versus server.cfg mode locking as unresolved until your own build proves which method wins. For more than four human campaign players, use a tested SourceMod/MetaMod plugin stack. Finally, validate every command with cvarlist, because the command names and accepted values can change with patches.
