Where can you buy Chrono Trigger legally?

Square Enix’s UK store also lists a digital Steam product, but that does not make its availability or price universal. Avoid relying on a price quoted elsewhere: check the relevant storefront at the time you buy.
Which version should you choose?
Choose Steam if you want to play on PC
The Steam listing describes updated controls, higher-resolution graphics, updated music, autosave, and the Dimensional Vortex and Lost Sanctum dungeons. It lists both keyboard and gamepad controls, so a controller is optional rather than a requirement. Check the listing for current system and regional store details before purchase.
Choose Google Play if you want to play on Android
The Google Play listing identifies the Square Enix release as “CHRONO TRIGGER (Upgrade Ver.)” and describes updated controls, graphics, and sound, along with the two bonus dungeons. Confirm the listing is available for your country and device in Google Play.

Consider iOS only after checking the local store
Square Enix’s North American support center includes iOS, Android, and Steam in its Chrono Trigger support categories. That is evidence of platform support, not a guarantee of a live App Store purchase in your country. Verify the listing directly in Apple’s regional store before choosing an iPhone or iPad as your route.
What should you check before paying?
- Your device: Start with hardware you already own; the verified options above cover PC and Android, while iOS requires a local-store check.
- Your preferred controls: Steam lists keyboard and gamepad controls. Mobile versions are described as having updated controls; consult the store listing for current device-specific details.
- Your region and price: Availability, price, and discounts are storefront- and date-dependent. Confirm them in the official store where you will make the purchase.
- Edition expectations: Square Enix support says content does not differ by platform, while graphics or optional settings may vary with hardware. This is a general support statement, not a full comparison of every historical port. See Square Enix’s platform support article.
- Console compatibility: If considering a past console release, verify its current official availability and that it works on your specific console in your territory.
Are unofficial downloads or emulation files an authorized way to buy it?
The official purchase routes established here are the storefront editions published or listed by Square Enix. Unofficial ports, ROM downloads, and emulation files are not verified authorized purchase routes. If you want a legitimate copy, buy through the appropriate official regional storefront rather than treating a download or a compatibility method as proof of a licensed sale.

Can you share Chrono Trigger gameplay or screenshots?
Square Enix’s materials usage guidelines, last updated April 10, 2025, allow certain non-commercial sharing of game videos and images and permit advertising monetization through platform-operated programs such as YouTube and Twitch. The guidelines do not grant blanket permission for other commercial use of game materials. Read the current Chrono Trigger materials usage guidelines before using footage, images, logos, or music; do not assume the policy authorizes affiliate use of those assets.
