Best Linux Distribution for a Jailbroken PS5 (2026 Guide)

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Ubuntu is the best default Linux distribution for a jailbroken PS5. The ps5-linux project provides a prebuilt Ubuntu 26.04 image named ps5-ubuntu2604.img.xz and documents an Ubuntu-focused build and boot workflow. Arch Linux is the sensible alternative for experienced users who want more control; Gentoo is an advanced custom-kernel project. CachyOS should be avoided for now because the platform guide reports immediate kernel panics.

Your distribution choice only matters after two checks: the console must be a supported PS5 model and firmware, and you must have the storage and USB peripherals needed by the loader. Linux is a soft modification rather than a permanent replacement for PS5 system software, so the jailbreak and Linux loader must be run again after a reboot.

Which distribution should you choose?

For most people, choose the project-provided Ubuntu 26.04 image. It gives you the most reproducible starting point, the clearest documented path, and the least kernel and image maintenance. That recommendation is about this PS5 Linux project, not Ubuntu on ordinary PCs: the important advantage is the ready-made image and platform-specific instructions.

Distribution Best use What you gain What you give up
Ubuntu 26.04 image Most users and first installations Prebuilt ps5-ubuntu2604.img.xz, project-specific documentation, reproducible setup Less freedom than assembling every component yourself
Arch Linux Experienced users who want a flexible base Control over packages, configuration and maintenance No equivalent turnkey image workflow is emphasized by the loader; more manual work is expected
Gentoo Advanced experimentation and custom kernels Fine-grained compilation and configuration, with community-documented PS5 patches Kernel, image and maintenance work are substantially more manual
CachyOS Not recommended at present No current platform advantage established The known-issues guidance reports immediate kernel panics and points users to Ubuntu or Arch instead

The practical ranking is therefore Ubuntu for reliability and repeatability, Arch for experienced customization, Gentoo for people who specifically want to work on the platform, and CachyOS only after a future compatibility report changes its status.

Check PS5 model and firmware before preparing Linux

The loader supports both PS5 Phat and PS5 Slim consoles, but only on specific firmware versions. Confirm the exact system software version in the PS5 settings before you download an image or attempt an entry point.

Firmware family Supported versions M.2 Linux support
3.x 3.00, 3.10, 3.20, 3.21 Not listed as supported by the project for this firmware family
4.x 4.00, 4.02, 4.03, 4.50, 4.51 Supported from 4.00 onward
5.x 5.00, 5.02, 5.10, 5.50 Supported by the loader where listed; M.2 support begins at 4.00
6.x 6.00, 6.02, 6.50 Supported by the loader where listed; M.2 support begins at 4.00
7.x 7.00, 7.01, 7.20, 7.40, 7.60, 7.61 Supported by the loader where listed; M.2 support begins at 4.00

Versions 1.xx and 2.xx are not currently in the loader’s supported list; the README says support may be added later. Firmware above 7.61 is not supported by the loader. Do not infer compatibility merely because a WebKit exploit works on a particular version: entering the jailbreak and loading Linux are separate compatibility problems.

Jailbreak entry support is not the same as Linux support

The UMTX repository describes a WebKit exploit based on CVE-2024-43102, but also notes limitations on newer firmware. Its documentation indicates that firmware 6.00 and later require a different WebKit exploit in that repository. That affects how you reach the loader; it does not expand the ps5-linux loader’s firmware list. Verify both the entry method and the loader support for your exact version.

Why Ubuntu is the safest default

Ubuntu has three practical advantages on this hardware. First, the project publishes an image you can write to external storage instead of building a complete root filesystem and kernel environment from scratch. Second, its instructions describe building or using that image directly, reducing the number of platform-specific decisions a new user must make. Third, a known-good image makes failures easier to classify: if the same image and loader work for other users on the same firmware family, you can concentrate on storage, exploit timing or display issues rather than an unknown distribution build.

Use Ubuntu when your priority is reaching a graphical Linux desktop, testing hardware support, or getting a repeatable setup that can be recreated after changing USB media. It is also the appropriate starting point if you have never maintained a PS5-specific kernel or image.

When Arch Linux is the better choice

Arch is the practical alternative for users who already understand rolling-release maintenance, package selection and recovery from a broken update. The maintained platform guidance currently recommends Ubuntu or Arch while identifying a problem with CachyOS. Arch can make sense if you want a leaner base, newer packages or direct control over services and graphics configuration.

The trade-off is that the loader’s turnkey workflow is Ubuntu-focused. Expect to adapt the image, kernel and userspace instructions to Arch rather than selecting a project-provided Arch image with the same level of documentation. Keep a known-working Ubuntu USB available while experimenting. That gives you a recovery path if an Arch package update, kernel change or display configuration prevents a graphical boot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Arch is not automatically faster

A lighter package selection can reduce background services, but the PS5-specific kernel, graphics stack and loader path remain the factors that determine whether Linux boots and whether hardware works. Choose Arch for control and willingness to maintain the system, not as a guaranteed performance upgrade.

What Gentoo involves

The community guide documents Gentoo running with custom PS5 patches. That makes it valuable for kernel experimentation, driver development and users who want to control compilation options. It is not the project’s default prebuilt path, so you will be responsible for more of the image and kernel lifecycle.

A Gentoo installation is appropriate only if you are comfortable recovering from a non-booting kernel, tracking PS5-specific patches and rebuilding components when the platform changes. Keep the Ubuntu image on separate media for comparison and recovery. If your goal is simply to use Linux applications or explore the PS5 hardware, Gentoo adds work without providing an established reliability advantage.

Why CachyOS should be avoided for now

The current known-issues guidance reports immediate kernel panics with CachyOS and recommends Ubuntu or Arch instead. A kernel panic occurs before you can evaluate ordinary desktop performance, so changing desktop settings or applications will not solve this platform-level failure. Until the guide records a working kernel and boot path, treat CachyOS as incompatible for a normal installation rather than as a distribution that needs minor tuning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage, peripherals and console hardware

You need a USB drive with at least 64GB of capacity. The loader strongly recommends an external SSD, which is a better choice for Linux workloads than a basic flash drive because it generally offers more consistent sustained performance. The requirement is capacity, not a promise that every 64GB device will perform equally well; leave room for the image, updates and applications.

  • Input: USB keyboard and USB mouse are required for the documented workflow and desktop use.
  • Internal expansion: a compatible M.2 SSD is optional on supported firmware, beginning with firmware 4.00 in the project’s list.
  • M.2 purpose: an M.2 used for Linux is dedicated to Linux rather than PS5 game storage.

Plan your storage before flashing. Writing an image normally replaces the existing contents of the target USB drive, so select the correct disk and back up anything you need from it. Keep the Ubuntu image file and a second working USB available if you intend to test Arch or Gentoo.

Ubuntu installation and first boot

The documented process is a sequence of image preparation, jailbreak entry and loader execution. The exploit does not permanently install Linux on the console, so timing and order matter on every boot.

  1. Confirm compatibility. Record whether the console is Phat or Slim and verify that its firmware appears in the supported list above. If it is newer than 7.61, stop: the loader does not support it.
  2. Prepare storage. Obtain a USB drive of at least 64GB; use an external SSD if possible. Connect a USB keyboard and mouse so you can operate the Linux desktop after boot.
  3. Obtain the Ubuntu image. Use the project’s prebuilt ps5-ubuntu2604.img.xz image, or follow its Ubuntu-specific instructions to build an image yourself. Building is useful when you need a customized image; the prebuilt file is the reproducible default.
  4. Flash the image. Decompress the image if your image-writing utility requires an uncompressed file, then write it to the USB drive or external SSD. Select the whole target disk, not a folder or an individual partition, and verify the utility reports completion before disconnecting it.
  5. Connect the devices. Attach the flashed storage, keyboard and mouse directly to the console. Avoid introducing hubs or adapters until you have completed a known-good boot.
  6. Run the appropriate jailbreak entry path. Use the entry method that matches your firmware. A WebKit exploit that reaches the jailbreak stage is not automatically proof that the Linux loader supports the console, so do not skip the firmware check.
  7. Send the loader. Transfer ps5-linux-loader.elf to the console using the project’s documented loader path. Wait for the console’s orange LED to become static; that is the signal to continue.
  8. Power on to boot Linux. After the static orange indication, power on the console as directed by the project workflow. The external image should then start the Ubuntu environment.

If the first boot fails, do not immediately rebuild the image. Repeat the process with the same image, check that the orange LED reached the static state, and remove any USB hub or extra peripheral. These checks distinguish an entry-timing problem from a distribution or storage problem.

Using an M.2 SSD instead of USB storage

On firmware 4.00 and later in the supported list, the project reports M.2 support. An M.2 can provide a more integrated Linux storage option, but it is not a shared game-storage arrangement: an M.2 assigned to Linux is dedicated to Linux rather than PS5 game storage. Treat it as an optional alternative to external storage, not a prerequisite for Ubuntu.

Soft-mod behavior and PS5 OS coexistence

Linux does not replace or modify the internal PS5 system software in this workflow. The loader describes the process as a soft modification, and the internal SSD is not modified. That means PS5 OS remains available, but Linux is not a permanent boot option that survives every restart.

After a reboot, shutdown or power loss, rerun the exploit and send the loader again. Think of the setup as a temporary Linux boot session rather than a conventional installed dual-boot menu. You can return to PS5 OS by restarting normally, but Linux access will require the entry process again on the next session.

What hardware works, and what remains unreliable

The community status reports several important capabilities: HDMI output at 4K60, audio, USB, Ethernet, AMD RDNA2 graphics, M.2 support on firmware 4.00 or later, CPU and GPU boost controls, DualSense over USB and hardware video decode. These features make the console useful as a Linux test system, media machine or desktop experiment, but the same report lists display and connectivity caveats.

Area Reported status Practical implication
Video HDMI 4K60 reported working Use a display and cable that support the selected mode; test at a lower resolution if the screen remains blank
Audio Audio works generally; HDMI audio is missing on some monitors Use USB or another audio path when a particular monitor does not expose HDMI audio
Graphics AMD RDNA2 graphics and hardware video decode reported working Graphics acceleration is available, but application compatibility still depends on Linux software
USB and Ethernet Reported working Prefer wired networking for initial setup and troubleshooting
Wi-Fi Reported unstable Keep Ethernet available for updates and large downloads
Display modes Some 1440p and 2160p issues reported Try a known-compatible 1080p mode before diagnosing the loader as broken
Screen saver Reported broken Disable or avoid relying on screen locking until a fix is available
Controller DualSense over USB reported working Use a wired connection for the documented setup and first tests
Boost controls CPU and GPU boost controls reported available Change performance settings cautiously and monitor stability

Troubleshooting by symptom

The console never reaches a static orange LED

  • Recheck the firmware against the loader list; a newer-than-7.61 system cannot be fixed by changing distributions.
  • Confirm that you used the entry method appropriate to the firmware, especially on 6.00 and later where the UMTX documentation identifies a different WebKit exploit requirement.
  • Resend ps5-linux-loader.elf and wait for the static indication before powering on.
  • Remove hubs and unnecessary USB devices, then retry with only the storage, keyboard and mouse attached.

Linux starts but the display is blank

  • Try a different HDMI input and a conservative display mode such as 1080p.
  • Remember that some 1440p and 2160p combinations are reported problematic, even though 4K60 is supported in general.
  • If video appears but sound does not, the monitor may be one of the systems with missing HDMI audio; use USB audio or another output path.

The system panics during boot

  • If you are using CachyOS, switch to the project-provided Ubuntu image or an Arch setup recommended by the maintained guide; immediate kernel panics are a known issue for that distribution on this platform.
  • With Ubuntu or Arch, retry the known-good image before changing kernels or adding packages. This establishes whether the failure is image-specific.
  • For Gentoo, review custom PS5 patches and kernel configuration first; its workflow is more manual by design.

Networking drops during setup

Use Ethernet for the initial installation and updates because Wi-Fi is reported unstable. Once the system is working, test Wi-Fi separately rather than treating a wireless dropout as evidence that the Linux image failed.

The next reboot returns to PS5 OS

That is expected soft-mod behavior. Run the jailbreak entry path and loader again; the process does not permanently alter the internal SSD or install a persistent boot menu.

A decision framework for different users

Your priority Choose Reason
First successful Linux boot Ubuntu 26.04 image It is the project’s reproducible, prebuilt path
Package and system customization Arch Linux The maintained guide identifies it as the practical alternative, with more hands-on maintenance
Kernel development or experimental compilation Gentoo Community documentation covers custom PS5 patches, but you own more of the build process
Fastest route from a failed CachyOS attempt Ubuntu or Arch The known-issues guidance reports CachyOS kernel panics and recommends these alternatives
Portable testing without changing console storage External USB SSD The loader leaves the internal SSD unmodified and the external drive can be replaced or recovered independently

Final recommendation

Use Ubuntu 26.04 on a 64GB-or-larger external drive, preferably an SSD, when you want the highest-probability first installation. Confirm that your Phat or Slim console is on one of the loader-supported firmware versions, use the correct jailbreak entry path, send ps5-linux-loader.elf, and wait for the static orange LED before powering on. Move to Arch when you have a specific reason to manage the system yourself; choose Gentoo only for advanced kernel work. Keep CachyOS out of the plan until the platform documentation reports that its kernel panic issue is resolved.
