Upload an SRT file in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- From the left menu, select Subtitles, then choose the video you want to caption.
- Select Add language and choose the language used in your subtitle track.
- In the Subtitles row for that language, select Add.
- Choose Upload file.
- Select With timing if the SRT already contains synchronized timestamps. Select Without timing if it contains text but still needs timing.
- Select the SRT file and choose Save.
YouTube also allows subtitles to be added during video upload. If the labels or layout differ in your Studio account, return to that video’s Subtitles section and use the upload-file option for the intended language. See YouTube Help’s “Add subtitles & captions”.
Prepare the SRT file
YouTube supports basic SubRip files with the .srt extension in plain UTF-8 text. A typical caption block has a sequence number, a start and end timestamp, and the caption text. YouTube Help explains that subtitle files contain the spoken text and timestamps for when each line should appear.
- Save the file as plain text with the
.srtextension. - Use UTF-8 encoding, especially for subtitle text in languages that use characters beyond basic English letters.
- Do not rely on SRT styling or markup: YouTube does not recognize basic SRT styling.
- Check that the language selected in Studio matches the language of the captions.

Choose the right upload option
With timing
Choose With timing when the SRT already has timecodes that match the video. This is the normal choice for a completed, synchronized SRT file.
Without timing
Choose Without timing when the file has the transcript text but no usable timestamps. YouTube’s upload flow accepts text this way, but the captions still need to be synchronized to the video.

Auto-sync or enter captions manually
If you have transcript text rather than a timed SRT, YouTube Studio also offers auto-sync and manual caption entry. Auto-sync requires transcript text in the spoken language and a language supported by YouTube speech recognition. YouTube says transcripts work best for videos under an hour with clear speech and good audio; it does not recommend this method for videos over an hour or with poor audio. Review and correct the captions
After saving, review the caption track against the video. Check that lines appear at the right moments and that names, dialogue, and punctuation are accurate. You can edit caption text and timestamps in Studio. You can also download the caption file, edit it in a plain-text editor, and upload the corrected version again. YouTube does not specify a guaranteed processing time for a standard SRT upload, so check the video’s Subtitles page rather than assuming the track will be ready on a particular schedule. Fix common SRT upload problems
- The file is rejected or not recognized: Confirm it is a basic SubRip
.srtfile saved as plain text in UTF-8, then try uploading it again. - Captions show at the wrong time: Choose With timing only when the timestamps are already correct. If the text is right but timing is missing or needs to be created, use Without timing, auto-sync where supported, or enter and adjust captions manually.
- Accented or non-English characters display incorrectly: Save the file in UTF-8 and upload the revised file.
- Formatting does not appear: Basic SRT styling or markup is not recognized by YouTube; keep the file to plain caption text and timing.
- The language or track is missing: Return to the video’s Subtitles page, add or select the correct language, and upload under that language’s subtitle row.
