OBS Studio is the best documented free starting point if you want to record or stream a live scene with a green-screen effect. Its Chroma Key filter works on Windows, macOS, and Linux and offers controls for key color, similarity, smoothness, and spill reduction. If you would rather record first and key the footage during editing, Microsoft Clipchamp has a documented timeline workflow and says all users can save videos in 1080p.

These are workflow distinctions based on the tools’ documented features, not a tested ranking of ease or key quality. Their official documentation does not establish which produces the cleanest result on the same footage. OBS’s listed version and compatibility details, and Clipchamp’s plan entitlements, can change; confirm current details on the linked product pages before installing or choosing a plan.
1. OBS Studio: key a source while recording
OBS is the stronger fit when you want the green-screen effect inside a composed scene. You can combine sources such as a webcam, window capture, images, text, browser windows, and capture cards, then record the scene with the key applied. The Chroma Key filter is documented for Windows, macOS, and Linux. See the OBS Studio product page and Chroma Key filter documentation.
Set up the scene and add the filter
- Install OBS from the official OBS Studio page for your operating system. Check that page for current release and system requirements.
- In OBS, create or select a scene. In the Sources panel, add your webcam or camera-capture source and any other sources you want in the recording. Arrange their order so the keyed subject appears over the replacement background.
- In Sources, select the camera source and open its Filters. Add the Chroma Key effect filter.
- Choose the key color that matches your backdrop, then adjust Similarity, Smoothness, and Spill Reduction while previewing your own shot. Similarity removes more of the selected color as it increases, but can also remove pixels you meant to keep. There is no universal setting that works for every backdrop, light, and camera.
- Record a short test and inspect the subject’s edges, hair, clothing, and any remaining color spill before capturing a longer session.
Get a cleaner key at the source
Microsoft’s setup guidance says a green, red, or blue surface can work, including a painted wall. Avoid creases and shadows, and use plenty of natural or artificial light. A dedicated backdrop is optional if you already have a suitable, evenly lit surface. For OBS, tune the filter to the footage rather than compensating for uneven lighting by pushing similarity too far.

2. Microsoft Clipchamp: apply the effect while editing
Choose Clipchamp if you prefer to record your screen or camera footage first, then replace the background in an editing timeline. Its green-screen effect can remove green, blue, or red from footage and place another video or image behind it. Microsoft’s walkthrough is on the Clipchamp green-screen feature page.
Build the timeline
- Open Clipchamp in a browser or use its Windows app, then start a project. Access and included features may depend on your account type; Clipchamp is also linked to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family accounts.
- Import the screen-recorded or camera footage containing the colored background, plus the replacement video or image.
- Place the replacement background on a lower timeline layer and the footage to be keyed on the upper layer.
- Select the upper clip, apply the green-screen effect, choose the relevant screen color, and adjust the threshold while previewing. Check the subject’s outline and any remaining background color before exporting.
- Export when the preview looks right. Microsoft says all users can save in 1080p. The free plan includes only a limited selection of green-screen stock footage and templates; all green-screen stock and templates require an upgrade. See the Clipchamp plans page for current entitlements.
How to choose between OBS and Clipchamp
- Pick OBS if you need the keyed camera in a scene while recording or streaming, or want to combine it with screen capture and other sources. Its filter documentation lists more direct tuning controls: similarity, smoothness, and spill reduction.
- Pick Clipchamp if you want a timeline-based editing workflow after recording. Its documented adjustment is a screen-threshold slider, and you can put a replacement image or video underneath the keyed clip.
- Check the free-plan boundary if you intend to use Clipchamp’s built-in stock assets: its free selection is limited, and all green-screen stock and templates require an upgrade. OBS is described by its publisher as free and open source.
- Check availability on your device and account before committing. OBS lists Windows, macOS, and Linux; Clipchamp is browser-based and also has a Windows app, with account-dependent access.
Common problems and fixes
The subject disappears along with the background
In OBS, lower similarity until the subject’s intended colors return, then refine smoothness and spill reduction. In Clipchamp, reduce the threshold and preview again. Both adjustments should be made against your actual footage.

Green remains around the subject
Check that the footage uses the selected screen color, then adjust the key settings while watching the edges. For the next recording, improve lighting and remove folds or shadows from the backdrop; these are common setup conditions addressed in Microsoft’s green-screen setup guidance.
The replacement background covers the subject
In Clipchamp, verify the layer order: the replacement image or video belongs below the keyed footage. In OBS, check the scene’s source order and make sure the camera source with the filter is positioned above the background source.

The effect looks uneven across the frame
Look for shadows, wrinkles, or uneven illumination on the backdrop. Improve the physical setup and record another short test rather than relying on a stronger key setting, which can remove parts of the subject.
