What an LMS plugin adds to WordPress
An LMS (learning management system) plugin turns a normal WordPress installation into a course platform. It supplies the course objects and rules that WordPress does not provide by itself: lessons, modules, enrolment, progress tracking, quizzes, certificates, student accounts and, when supported, payments. You still choose the theme, hosting, email service and other site components.

A visually attractive course builder cannot compensate for a payment gateway you cannot use or renewal costs your budget cannot sustain.
#1 Best Overall
The four-plugin shortlist at a glance
| Plugin | Free or paid core | Payment support reported by comparison guides | Best-fit use case reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| LearnDash | Premium only; no free version | Entry plan reported to include Stripe and PayPal | Enterprise deployments, certifications and strong quizzes |
| LifterLMS | Free core | Free core does not include a payment gateway | Memberships and coaching |
| Tutor LMS | Free core with Pro upgrade | Free version supports PayPal; Stripe requires Pro | Marketplaces and multi-instructor sites |
| LearnPress | Free core with paid add-ons and bundles | Free core includes PayPal; Stripe add-on reported at about $39 | Lowest-cost start and a broad free ecosystem |
These descriptions come from 2026 comparison coverage rather than verified vendor checkout pages. “Free” means the core plugin can be installed without a licence; hosting, a WordPress site, payment processing and optional add-ons still cost money.
How the leading plugins differ
LearnDash: premium-first administration and assessment
LearnDash is the premium-only choice in this group. Comparison coverage places it at the top for enterprise use, certification programmes and quiz capability. One reviewer specifically describes its quiz engine as advanced and mentions question pools, which can let an instructor draw randomized questions from a larger bank instead of presenting the same test to every learner.
The reported entry plan includes both Stripe and PayPal, a meaningful advantage when you need to sell immediately without assembling separate gateway extensions. Because there is no free edition, you pay before validating the workflow on a live site. That trade-off can be sensible for an established academy with a defined launch plan, but less so for a hobby project still testing demand.
- Choose it for: certification paths, controlled assessments, corporate or school administration, and a premium launch where payment options must be ready.
- Check before purchase: the exact licence tier, number of sites, included integrations and renewal amount; published comparison prices conflict.
- Assessment caveat: the “advanced” quiz characterization is a single reviewer’s assessment, not an independently measured benchmark.
LifterLMS: a free core for coaching and memberships
LifterLMS is positioned around coaching and membership sites. Its core plugin is free, which lets you build and test course structure before committing to a paid plan. The free core does not include a payment gateway, so a site intended to charge learners must budget for the relevant commerce extension or plan.
That separation can be useful when the LMS is primarily a benefit for an existing membership. For example, a gaming community might use WordPress membership access to unlock coaching lessons and handle billing elsewhere. If course sales are the business from day one, calculate the full paid stack rather than treating the free core as the final cost.
- Choose it for: one-to-one or group coaching, membership benefits and communities where access rules matter as much as course sales.
- Check before purchase: which payment and membership functions are included in your selected plan, and how the second-year renewal differs from the first year.
- Budget warning: comparison pages report widely different totals, from a low annual starting figure to a substantially higher second-year amount.
Tutor LMS: marketplace workflow and predictable reported renewal
Tutor LMS has a free core and a Pro edition. Comparison coverage describes it as having the largest active install base among the listed plugins and frequently recommends it for multi-instructor sites. Those are claims from comparison material, not an independently audited market-share count, but they point to the product’s intended role: several instructors creating and managing courses through a modern front-end builder.
The free edition reportedly supports PayPal. Stripe is described as a Pro-only feature, so a Stripe-dependent checkout cannot remain entirely on the free tier. For a marketplace, also model instructor onboarding, revenue sharing, moderation and refund handling separately from the LMS licence; the comparison material does not establish that those business rules are included.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose it for: a catalogue with multiple teachers, front-end course creation and a marketplace-style presentation.
- Check before purchase: the exact instructor permissions, commission features, payment processor support and any limits on courses or sites.
- Renewal note: comparison guides commonly quote about $199 per year for Pro, with the same figure in year two, making it the most predictable renewal in that coverage.
LearnPress: the cheapest way to validate an idea
LearnPress is the strongest candidate when minimizing the initial licence cost is the priority. Its free core is described as having the most generous free ecosystem of the group. PayPal is included, while a Stripe add-on is reported at about $39. That combination can be enough to launch a small paid course without buying a complete bundle.
Advanced assessment changes the calculation. Proctoring and timed quizzes are reported to require paid add-ons, so a certification provider should price those extensions before choosing LearnPress solely because the core is free. Bundles are quoted between $149 and $299 per year in comparison coverage, with a second-year renewal near $209; the exact contents and renewal terms need confirmation.
- Choose it for: a low-cost pilot, a small catalogue, or a site that can start with PayPal and add capabilities as enrolment grows.
- Check before purchase: the add-ons needed for Stripe, proctoring, timed tests, certificates and any reporting you consider essential.
- Do not assume: that every feature shown in a LearnPress demonstration belongs to the free core.
Free-tier payment gateways: the first practical filter
Payment support is often more decisive than a feature checklist. A gateway can determine whether a free pilot is actually sellable in your country and to your audience. The following is the gateway coverage reported by the comparison pages; it is not a guarantee of current compatibility or regional availability.
| Plugin and tier | Gateway reported | What that means for a launch |
|---|---|---|
| LearnDash entry plan | Stripe and PayPal included | Both named gateways are reported as part of the entry price, subject to licence and regional checks. |
| LifterLMS free core | No payment gateway | You need a paid extension, plan or separate membership-commerce arrangement to charge learners. |
| Tutor LMS free | PayPal | A PayPal checkout can start on free; Stripe is reported as Pro-only. |
| LearnPress free core | PayPal | PayPal is included; Stripe is reported as an approximately $39 add-on. |
Before committing, verify supported currencies, recurring payments, taxes, refunds, webhooks and account requirements with the gateway and plugin documentation. A gateway being listed does not establish that every subscription or membership scenario works without another extension.

Prices and renewal: why year two matters
Available 2026 comparison articles disagree on several prices. No vendor pricing page was verified for this comparison, so the figures below are planning references, not current quotations. “Year two” is especially important because a first-year promotion or introductory bundle can make an otherwise expensive platform look cheap.
Rank #3
| Plugin | Reported first-year or entry figure | Reported year-two figure | How to use the number |
|---|---|---|---|
| LearnDash | $119.40/year in one guide; $259/year in another | The conflicting guides do not establish one figure | Confirm the licence tier, site count and renewal directly before budgeting. |
| LifterLMS | $199 in one analysis; paid plans from $120/year in another | $398 in the analysis that quoted $199 for year one | Ask whether the figure is a plan, bundle or introductory price. |
| Tutor LMS Pro | About $199/year | About $199/year | This is the most predictable renewal reported, but still needs a current checkout check. |
| LearnPress bundles | $149–$299/year | Near $209 in comparison coverage | Compare the included add-ons; a cheaper bundle may omit the assessment or gateway features you need. |
Build a three-year worksheet with the licence, required add-ons, hosting, transaction fees, email delivery and support. Record whether each line is a one-time purchase, annual renewal or usage-based charge. Then calculate the cost per active learner rather than comparing plugin stickers alone.
Quizzes, exams and certifications
Assessment requirements separate a casual course library from a serious training system.
When LearnDash is the safer assessment bet
The available comparison evidence gives LearnDash the strongest quiz reputation and specifically mentions question pools. If your gaming academy needs randomized theory exams, repeat attempts or a certification gate, start by checking whether its current quiz settings meet those rules without custom development.
When LearnPress needs add-on budgeting
LearnPress can handle basic course delivery on its free core, but advanced assessment such as proctoring and timed quizzes is reported as paid add-on territory. Include those add-ons in the initial design; adding them after students have enrolled can require migrating settings and retesting certificates.
What to verify for every plugin
- Question types required by your syllabus, including media-rich questions for game footage.
- Question banks or pools, randomization and per-student attempts.
- Time limits, pass marks, retakes and instructor review of free-text answers.
- Certificate issue, expiry and revocation rules.
- Exportable grades and progress data for support or compliance.
The available comparisons do not provide a common, measured benchmark for these functions across all four plugins. Test a representative exam in a staging site instead of inferring equivalence from a marketing label.
Choosing by site type
Enterprise or certification academy
Begin with LearnDash because comparison coverage maps it to enterprise administration, certifications and the strongest quizzes. Confirm user-management limits, reporting, single sign-on and your required certificate workflow before signing a contract.
Coaching community or membership club
Begin with LifterLMS. Its free core is useful for modelling lessons and access rules, but its lack of a free payment gateway means a paid membership plan must be part of the budget from the start.
Multi-instructor marketplace
Begin with Tutor LMS. Its front-end builder and frequent recommendation for multi-instructor sites fit a catalogue where teachers need to contribute without entering the WordPress back end. Validate instructor permissions, moderation and payout processes separately.
Small pilot with the lowest entry cost
Begin with LearnPress. PayPal in the free core lets you test a basic paid course, while the reported Stripe add-on and paid assessment extensions leave room to expand. Recalculate the total once your pilot needs timed or proctored exams.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical selection and launch process
- Write the learner journey. List how a visitor discovers a course, pays, enrols, watches lessons, takes quizzes, receives a certificate and gets support. Mark every step that must be automated.
- Separate must-haves from enhancements. Put payment gateway, recurring access, quiz rules and reporting in the must-have column. Keep visual polish and optional integrations out of the first gate.
- Shortlist two plugins. Use the use-case mapping above, then choose a second option that meets the same must-haves. This gives you a migration reference if a licence or renewal changes.
- Install on staging. Use a copy of your WordPress site, create one instructor and three test learners, and disable indexing. Never test payment webhooks against a live student database.
- Build one complete course. Include a video lesson, downloadable file, prerequisite, quiz, failed attempt, certificate and refund scenario. A full vertical slice exposes missing features earlier than importing hundreds of lessons.
- Test checkout in sandbox mode. Verify successful payment, failed payment, cancellation, duplicate webhook delivery and manual refunds. Check that an enrolment is not granted twice.
- Test roles and privacy. Log in as administrator, instructor and learner. Confirm that instructors cannot see unrelated student records and that learners cannot access draft lessons or another learner’s grades.
- Record renewal assumptions. Save the licence tier, included sites, add-ons and renewal price shown at checkout. Set a calendar reminder before the renewal date.
- Launch gradually. Invite a small cohort, monitor failed payments and support questions, then open the catalogue after the complete journey works on desktop and mobile.
Common pitfalls and fixes
Choosing on the free label alone
A free core can still require paid gateways, certificates, proctoring, email delivery or membership controls. Make a feature-to-add-on list before comparing totals.
Ignoring the renewal year
Conflicting 2026 figures show why a first-year price is not a reliable lifetime estimate. Ask for the recurring amount and whether the licence keeps working if you do not renew support.
Assuming a gateway works everywhere
Stripe and PayPal availability, currencies and recurring billing vary by country and account type. Run a real sandbox transaction in your target region before announcing a launch date.
Building a marketplace without governance
Multi-instructor software does not automatically define instructor contracts, content approval, refunds, commissions or tax records. Write those rules and test each role before accepting submissions.
Moving students after a plugin change
Export enrolments, course identifiers, quiz results and certificates before switching systems. Keep the old site read-only until learners can sign in, see their progress and complete a test course in the replacement.
Testing only the happy path
Expired cards, abandoned checkouts, failed quizzes, revoked access and bounced emails are normal operations. Include them in staging tests and document the recovery action for support staff.
Other names you may encounter
2026 comparison lists also mention Sensei, Masteriyo, MasterStudy and Sikshya LMS. One guide suggests Sikshya LMS for a lifetime licence. The available coverage does not provide a comparable, verified matrix for their free gateways, quiz depth or year-two cost, so they are best treated as additional candidates rather than ranked winners. If one appears on your shortlist, apply the same checks: complete payment path, assessment requirements, instructor roles, migration options and recurring total.
Bottom line for 2026 buyers
There is no universal winner. LearnDash is the premium, assessment-oriented starting point; LifterLMS fits coaching and membership access; Tutor LMS is the natural first test for a multi-instructor marketplace; and LearnPress offers the least expensive way to validate a basic paid course. The deciding evidence is not a feature-counting chart: it is whether your free tier can take payment, whether its quiz model matches your exams, and what you will pay when year two begins. Confirm those three points on the current vendor checkout and documentation before publishing your first course.
