1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a longsword build centered on deflecting enemy weapon attacks, start with Sword Counter, invest in longsword skills that improve damage and Skyborn Might use, and dodge attacks the discipline cannot deflect. Cloudfrost’s Edge is a parry-friendly weapon option; Flamebringer is an alternative for a hybrid approach. Neither is established as the best choice for every build or encounter.
Best discipline for a longsword build
Choose Sword Counter for a deflect-centered setup. Longswords support timed parries, and Sword Counter is the discipline recommended by build guides for deflecting and countering weapon attacks. Its value depends on reading an enemy’s moves: it does not make every attack parryable.
Use the two Sword Counter variant nodes as part of the core investment. Against attacks the discipline cannot deflect—including magic and martial attacks such as kicks and punches—rely on dodging and adjust to the enemy’s moveset instead. Xbox’s beginner guide also emphasizes that armor affects stats and damage resistances, making defense a matter of matching equipment to the threat.
Longsword skills and progression
Build outward from Sword Counter rather than spending only on the discipline. The recommended route combines longsword damage upgrades with tools for Clash and Skyborn Might.
#1 Best Overall
- UK PSN account may be required for any online features
- Sword Saint and Windforce: Both are part of the recommended progression. Windforce enables an immediate charged strong attack at the cost of one Skyborn Might, which can help break an enemy when striking from behind.
- Strong Blade nodes: Upgrade these to support longsword damage.
- Sword Savant: Gamer Guides says this adds Clash to the third light attack, offering another way to pressure an opponent.
- Sword Master and Steel Resolve: PCGamesN recommends these as Skyborn Might support; consider them according to your progression and resource needs.
These are guide recommendations, not a fixed level-by-level route. Prioritize the skills that support the way you handle an encounter, and avoid treating every listed node as mandatory.
Which longsword should you use?
There is no settled cross-source winner. Pick between these options based on whether you want to reinforce parry defense or build a hybrid setup; other longswords can remain viable.

| Weapon | Why a guide recommends it | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudfrost’s Edge | Gamer Guides says its affix briefly reduces incoming damage after a parry. | A parry-focused Sword Counter setup. |
| Flamebringer | Insider Gaming’s author prefers it for a hybrid build, while noting that most longswords are viable. | A hybrid approach rather than a build built solely around parries. |
These are source-specific recommendations, not proof that either weapon outperforms the rest in every fight or game version.
Equipment for the deflect build
PCGamesN’s suggested configuration is one option for a deflect setup, not a universal equipment prescription. It includes poise-break and strength tempering, Divine Ward, Echo of Lu Bingzhang, and Eagle, Lifesteal, and Dragon-Fish pendants. For boss fights, that guide suggests swapping in stamina recovery.

Adjust armor to the encounter’s damage type and resistance needs rather than keeping one set on for every enemy. Equipment availability and balance can also vary with progression and game updates.

Feathering is a separate, later-investment playstyle, not an add-on to the Sword Counter setup. Gamer Guides describes a route that comes online later than a typical early-game build and uses Serpent Fang, available in Chapter 3, alongside Corrosive Flurry and Feathering nodes.

- A soulslike, action RPG set in the land of Shu during the dark and tumultuous late Ming Dynasty, plagued with warring factions and a mysterious illness spawning monstrous creatures.
- Battle against grotesque abominations, drawing on ancient lore to challenge the creeping darkness that threatens the humanity that remains.
The route also draws on corruption and Feathering support, including Fa – Corruptive Feathers and relevant Illusive-tree skills. Choose this path if you want to specialize in those synergies and are prepared to invest outside the default parry plan. For an exact progression or equipment route, consult the source guide for the current game version rather than assuming its recommendations are unchanged.
Choosing between the two approaches
| Consideration | Sword Counter parry build | Feathering route |
|---|---|---|
| Combat focus | Deflecting weapon attacks, countering, and building longsword damage. | Feathering and corruption synergies. |
| When it fits | When the enemy uses attacks Sword Counter can deflect; dodge magic and martial attacks it cannot. | As a later, specialized investment plan. |
| Investment emphasis | Longsword progression, including Sword Counter variants and supporting skills. | Serpent Fang, Corrosive Flurry, Feathering nodes, and relevant Illusive-tree support. |
Recommendations may shift with patches. The available guides do not establish a universally optimal build for every encounter or current game version, so treat the setups as starting points and adapt your skills and equipment to the enemies you face.
