Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor one 24/7 YouTube playlist made from already-encoded videos, start by testing a Linux VPS with about 2 vCPUs and 2–4 GB of RAM. That is a practical trial configuration, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee: the right size depends on whether FFmpeg only loops and sends files or also encodes, scales, composites, or filters them. If you want to avoid administering a VPS, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to try first: it keeps an uploaded playlist live on YouTube without leaving a computer running.
Choose VPS specs for the actual FFmpeg workload
The central sizing question is whether FFmpeg is passing through finished media or doing sustained video processing. YouTube specifies the stream arriving at its ingest system; it does not prescribe the VPS CPU or RAM that must produce it.
| Workload | Reasonable starting point | What to validate |
|---|---|---|
| Loop pre-encoded files and send them without re-encoding, scaling, or heavy filters | About 2 vCPUs and 2–4 GB RAM as an initial trial | Unexpected CPU use, stable output, enough local disk, and transfer allowance for continuous streaming |
| Encode, transcode, scale, composite, or apply substantial filters continuously | No reliable universal vCPU/RAM minimum is established; test the exact workload, and consider larger or dedicated compute if shared CPU cannot sustain it | FFmpeg speed stays at least 1x through demanding scenes, with resource headroom and acceptable sustained-CPU terms |
The 2-vCPU/2–4-GB suggestion is a starting inference for one lightweight stream, also reflected in a 2026 hosting-provider guide; it is not an independent benchmark. Provider CPU sharing, codec, resolution, frame rate, concurrent jobs, and processing filters can all change the result.
Why looping and encoding need different machines
Looping a finished file
If the files are already encoded to the format and quality you intend to send, a simple loop is usually a much lighter job than producing new video frames in real time. Do not buy a large server just because the channel must stay live for long periods; first test the actual playlist command and watch CPU, memory, network, and FFmpeg logs.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Disk capacity is governed by the media retained on the VPS, plus the operating system, logs, and any temporary files—not by the outgoing bitrate. Account for the size of the complete playlist before choosing storage.
Encoding or applying filters
When FFmpeg encodes live, it must keep up with the media clock. Google for Developers’ VP9 guide describes 1x as the minimum speed; sustained performance below 1x can cause buffering and broken transmission. Measure with your actual codec, preset, resolution, frame rate, representative footage, and filters. A speed result for one codec or machine does not predict another VPS workload.

Google’s example on a quad-core desktop shows some tested 1440p and 2160p VP9 settings falling below real time. That illustrates how workload-sensitive encoding is; it does not establish that every 4K encode or every VPS will fail. AWS’s 2024 FFmpeg 6.0 benchmark compared particular x264/x265 workloads on specified CPU and GPU instances and multiple output resolutions. Its finding that tested GPU instances sustained more parallel multi-resolution encodes is relevant to substantial transcoding, not proof that a GPU VPS is economical for one pre-encoded loop. AWS recommends validating benchmark results against the intended use case.
Check the installed FFmpeg build for the encoders and options you plan to use, then test the exact command and representative media before sizing around a codec feature.

Set the outgoing stream for YouTube
Use YouTube’s ingest recommendations as a target for the outgoing stream, not as a VPS CPU specification or a guarantee of network throughput. YouTube Help’s guidance accessed in 2026 recommends these H.264 bitrates:
| Output | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMP/RTMPS; RTMPS is recommended for encrypted transmission. Test the VPS’s stable outbound rate against the chosen bitrate, allowing practical headroom for protocol overhead and fluctuations. The bitrate recommendations do not prove that a particular host or location can sustain that rate.

Hetzner and DigitalOcean are examples of providers whose official plan information helps compare CPU model, transfer, memory, storage, and price; neither is established here as best in every region or workload. Recheck the provider’s live pricing and plan terms before committing.
Validate the VPS before committing
- Install the FFmpeg build you intend to use and run the exact playlist command with representative media.
- If encoding or filtering, check the reported speed during demanding scenes; it must remain at least 1x for real-time output. If simply looping finished media, check for unexpectedly high CPU use and stable output.
- Test at the intended resolution, frame rate, audio settings, and YouTube ingest bitrate.
- Run a practical trial long enough to observe reconnects, process stability, and resource growth. Monitor CPU, RAM, disk, network, and FFmpeg logs.
- Check YouTube stream health and confirm the provider’s transfer accounting, sustained-CPU policy, and billing for the selected plan.
YouTube advises testing before starting and monitoring stream health; its Help guidance also says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Trial duration and monitoring detail are practical recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted service.
Troubleshoot common sizing and stream problems
- FFmpeg speed stays below 1x: Encoding is falling behind under the tested setup. Reduce processing demands or test a larger or more predictable CPU plan; repeat with demanding scenes before treating the change as sufficient.
- Stream health is poor despite low CPU use: Check stable outbound capacity, the ingest bitrate, and transfer/network behavior. A plan’s advertised vCPU count does not establish its sustained network throughput.
- The playlist stops or restarts unexpectedly: Inspect FFmpeg logs, process status, and VPS restart or console controls. Observe a sufficiently long trial to identify instability before making a long commitment.
- Disk fills up: Recheck the complete media library size and leave capacity for the OS, logs, and temporary files; outgoing bitrate does not determine local playlist storage needs.
- The monthly bill exceeds the base price: Recalculate transfer from bitrate and uptime, then include overages and required add-ons in the plan comparison.
