Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose YouTube’s low latency for limited interaction and ultra-low for real-time conversation; use normal when viewer buffering matters more than fast replies. Low and ultra-low latency can make playback more prone to buffering, and neither supports 4K. Then match your encoder bitrate to the resolution, frame rate, and codec—and test the complete setup before your event.
Choose a latency mode for the kind of stream you’re running
YouTube defines latency as the delay between capture at the camera and display to viewers. Lower latency reduces the player’s read-ahead buffer, which can make disruptions between your encoder and the viewer’s player more noticeable. YouTube’s mode descriptions and estimates below come from its live-streaming latency help page; the page shows no publication date or methodology, so its estimates are not guarantees for an individual stream.
| Mode | Good fit | YouTube’s viewer-latency description | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Non-interactive events where replies do not need to be immediate | No numerical estimate stated | Lowest amount of viewer buffering; supports all resolutions and live features. |
| Low | Limited interaction, such as polls where replies need not be immediate | Most viewers experience less than 10 seconds | Middle ground between interaction and buffering; does not support 4K. |
| Ultra-low | Real-time conversation and highly interactive events | Most viewers experience less than five seconds | Greater chance of buffering and greater sensitivity to network or ingestion problems; does not support 4K. |
Use the lowest-latency mode that your event actually needs. A game stream with live chat or quick audience decisions may benefit from low or ultra-low latency. A broadcast where viewers mainly watch—such as a long presentation or scheduled gameplay showcase—can use normal latency, especially if smooth playback and 4K are priorities. These are choices, not promises of a particular end-to-end delay.
Set latency in YouTube Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room for the stream.
- Open the stream dashboard’s Stream Settings.
- Choose Normal latency, Low latency, or Ultra-low latency according to the interaction and resolution tradeoffs above.
- Save or apply the setting if prompted, then test playback and interaction before the event.
YouTube says webcam and mobile streams are always configured for interactivity, so those stream types do not offer a selectable latency mode. The setting is available for encoder-based streams.

Use encoder settings that YouTube accepts
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP or RTMPS delivery; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data in transit to and through Google’s servers.
Recommended bitrate examples
These are YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates, not minimums and not guarantees of picture quality or playback latency. Select the row matching your output resolution, frame rate, and codec.

| Output | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 | Listed minimums for AV1/H.265 and H.264 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps / 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps | Not stated in the cited examples |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps | Not stated in the cited examples |
The minimums shown are the values YouTube lists for 1080p60; they are not substitutes for the recommended rates in the table. The full bitrate guidance includes additional resolutions and frame rates, so check YouTube’s current table if your output differs from these examples. A bitrate that is too low can limit the feed, while one your connection cannot sustain can contribute to interruptions and buffering.
Other encoder parameters
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
- Audio: AAC or MP3; for stereo, 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 Kbps bitrate.
- Video structure: square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
- Color: Rec. 709 for SDR. YouTube lists H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
Low and ultra-low latency do not support 4K, regardless of the encoder’s ability to send it. If 4K is essential, choose normal latency. The mode limitation and encoder specifications are described in YouTube’s latency guidance and encoder settings.

Prepare the encoder and protect your stream key
For an encoder-based broadcast, YouTube provides a stream URL and a stream key in its live-stream settings. The URL tells the encoder where to send its feed; the key tells YouTube which encoder feed to accept. Enter both into the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP/RTMPS destination fields. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube explains these items in Manage live stream settings.
Use the current stream key shown for the event or the key you have intentionally configured for reuse. Do not post it in chat, screenshots, public overlays, or support messages. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder before going live.

Test the full path before viewers arrive
YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the real event, monitoring stream health, checking upload bitrate with a speed test, and selecting quality the connection can reliably support. Its guidance does not promise that a speed-test result prevents congestion or buffering.
- Check upload capacity. Run a speed test on the same connection and, where possible, device you will use for the broadcast. Confirm the upload connection can sustain your encoder’s selected bitrate rather than merely reaching it briefly.
- Run a representative test stream. Include the sort of motion, scene changes, and audio your audience will see. A static test image may not reveal problems that appear during gameplay or fast movement.
- Watch stream health. Check YouTube Live Control Room while the encoder is sending. Address warnings or unstable delivery before the event starts.
- Check the viewer experience. Open the stream as a viewer and test audio, video, and the interaction you need. Confirm that the selected latency mode meets the event’s needs without unacceptable buffering.
- Consider a wired connection if practical. An Ethernet cable, such as Cat 6, is an optional way to connect the streaming device to a network. YouTube’s cited guidance requires a connection that can sustain the bitrate but does not specifically recommend Ethernet or claim it will eliminate latency, congestion, or buffering.
Troubleshoot delay, buffering, and connection warnings
- Viewers report buffering after you switch to low or ultra-low: The reduced read-ahead buffer makes playback more sensitive to delivery problems. Check stream health and upload stability; if smooth playback matters more than fast interaction, switch to normal latency.
- The stream is unstable even though average upload speed looks sufficient: Network congestion or momentary ingestion problems can still interrupt delivery. Test during representative conditions, reduce the output quality or bitrate to a level the connection can sustain, and check stream health again.
- You cannot select a latency mode: Confirm whether you are streaming from a webcam or mobile device. YouTube says those streams are always configured for interactivity and do not offer a selectable mode.
- You need 4K but only see lower-latency choices: Low and ultra-low latency do not support 4K. Use normal latency if 4K is a requirement.
- YouTube does not accept the encoder feed: Verify the stream URL and key in the encoder against YouTube’s current stream settings. If the key was exposed or replaced, update the encoder with the active key.
- Motion looks poor or the feed struggles at the chosen rate: Confirm the codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate align with YouTube’s current recommendations, then retest with comparable movement and audio.
