OBS Studio is a sensible first macOS app to try for sending prerecorded video to YouTube Live, but the available evidence does not establish it as the definitive best app for unattended 24/7 playback. A Mac-based setup depends on the Mac, OBS, and internet connection staying available. If you want the stream to keep running without a computer at home, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to consider first: it loops uploaded videos on YouTube, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
Which app should you use?
Start by evaluating OBS Studio. YouTube supports encoder-based live streams, and OBS is a streaming encoder candidate. However, YouTube’s official guidance does not compare current macOS apps for looping prerecorded playlists, unattended restarts, or 24/7 uptime. Treat OBS as a practical option to test—not a guarantee that a broadcast will run continuously.
YouTube’s live-stream tips also identify software encoders as a valid approach and name Wirecast as an example, but do not rank it against OBS for continuous prerecorded playback on a Mac. Choose based on your need for local control, your ability to monitor the setup, and whether keeping the Mac and connection available is acceptable.
Check YouTube eligibility and prepare the stream
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-streaming requirements before configuring the encoder.
- Prepare the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream, then use the stream key and server details supplied there in your encoder. YouTube detects encoder settings by default; with a custom stream key, you can set resolution and frame rate manually. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your broadcast.
- Choose an ingest protocol. Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP; Google explains the protocol at RTMPS ingestion.
- Check your content rights and policy obligations. A stream must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Having permission to play a recording is important; a 24/7 loop is not automatically eligible for monetization. Review YouTube’s policy and setup guidance in Get started with live streaming.
Set encoder values to match the source and connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance specifies H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Follow the bitrate row for your codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s encoder settings table, rather than choosing a value based only on the Mac’s capabilities.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Example: 1080p at 30 fps | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations, not independent benchmark results or a promise that a specific internet connection will sustain the stream. The figures are video bitrate, not total household bandwidth. Allow upload headroom for overhead and other network use, and assess sustained upload capacity rather than relying on a brief peak speed test.
Configure and test the Mac-based workflow
Exact OBS menu labels and media-source behavior can vary by version. The available official OBS help material does not establish how a current macOS version handles every looping playlist or what system requirements apply. Before relying on the setup, confirm these behaviors in the OBS version you install and consult the OBS Help Portal if something does not work as expected.

- Install OBS and add your prerecorded source. Add the video or playlist you intend to broadcast. Verify in the current version that playback loops when the file ends and advances through the playlist as intended; do not assume the source’s behavior without testing it.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Use the stream key and server information shown for the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not share or publish the key.
- Set output and video values. Choose a supported codec and match the output resolution and frame rate to the material and your upload capacity. Set constant bitrate and a 2-second keyframe interval, keeping the interval at or below 4 seconds. For bitrate, use the applicable YouTube table values rather than treating the 1080p30 examples above as universal.
- Check the audio path. Preview the stream with representative audio. Confirm that audio continues through file transitions and that volume is usable; a picture that loops correctly can still leave viewers with silence or interrupted sound.
- Prevent local interruptions. Check that macOS will not sleep, that power settings suit a long-running broadcast, and that the network remains connected. These are operational safeguards to verify on your Mac, not a guarantee of unattended uptime.
- Run a representative test before the real broadcast. Check the YouTube preview, confirm the stream is accessible, and review stream health and audio/video quality. YouTube advises testing and monitoring; neither its guidance nor the OBS help page promises indefinite operation.
Local Mac or cloud playout?
The choice is mainly about where playback runs and what you must keep available. The comparison below describes the operating trade-offs, not measured reliability results.
| Approach | What stays in your control | What must be available | What to assess |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local Mac encoder such as OBS | Local encoder configuration and, depending on the setup, scenes and overlays | The Mac, encoder, power, and network connection | Cost of keeping the Mac available, media looping, monitoring, and recovery after app or network interruptions |
| Hosted/cloud playout | Uploaded media and service-side playback options, depending on provider | A suitable hosted service and its YouTube connection | Price, storage, scheduling, restart behavior, YouTube compatibility, and support |
For a local setup, plan how you will notice and recover from a dropped connection, a stopped encoder, or a Mac restart. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health; the cited official guidance does not establish that OBS automatically recovers from every interruption. For cloud services, verify the provider’s current terms and capabilities directly before committing.
