If you only need to secure the screen, press Windows key + L to lock the PC instead—but locking or switching users may still stop OBS from rendering, so test your exact setup before relying on it.
Sign out, lock, and switch user are different

Microsoft documents the distinction between these actions for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in User Account Access in Windows. OBS also warns that active streams and recordings will be shut down when OBS exits. Its stream key does not change this: YouTube describes the key as the address and password that lets an encoder send a feed, not a way to keep the encoder running.
If you are stepping away, lock the PC
- Leave OBS open and confirm the stream is active.
- Press Windows key + L to lock the screen. Do not choose Sign out.
- From another device, check the stream. Use a private or unlisted test first if you need to know whether your particular OBS scene continues rendering while locked.
Locking protects access to the desktop while leaving applications open, but it does not guarantee that every OBS source continues to render. An OBS forum response dated March 25, 2021 reported that Windows could remove GPU access when a session was locked or switched away, leaving OBS unable to produce output. That is a community report, not a current Microsoft guarantee; behavior can vary with the Windows build, graphics driver, hardware, OBS version, and scene sources. Test the same setup you plan to use for a real broadcast.
For an unattended stream, keep the streaming environment active
If you need OBS itself to keep sending a feed, it must remain running in a session and environment that continue producing output. Signing out is incompatible with that requirement. A locked PC or a switched-away Windows session is not a dependable substitute unless your own test confirms that the stream continues. Plan to monitor the broadcast and verify the encoder feed in YouTube Live Control Room; OBS connects directly from your computer to YouTube, so network stability also matters.

After an interruption
- Check whether OBS is still open and whether it is producing output before changing the stream key.
- Check the encoder feed and broadcast status in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Review OBS output status and logs for a local application or connection problem.
- Remember that YouTube auto-start and auto-stop control broadcast behavior from an encoder; they do not keep OBS alive after Windows closes the application.
