No reviewed source documents a selectable Performance/Quality switch, a resolution target, a frame-rate cap, or a universal graphics preset. Therefore, there is no verified list of console graphics values to copy. The safest setup is to use the correct current-generation edition, leave the game’s documented options at your preference, and verify your console’s live display-output information rather than forcing an undocumented setting.

What “best settings” means for the current-generation editions
On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, smooth performance is primarily an edition and output-checking question, not a menu-tuning exercise. 2K Support’s October 2026 announcement describes the upgrade as the same game with “60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements.” Microsoft’s product page describes the Xbox version as optimized for Series X|S and lists “60 fps+.” The latter is a capability label on a store listing, not an independent test proving a constant frame rate in every scene.

The available official documentation does not establish a console-side choice between a higher-resolution mode and a higher-frame-rate mode. It also does not publish a resolution number, frame-pacing measurements, or separate PS5 and Xbox performance results. Any guide that presents exact current-generation resolution, VRR behavior, or a guaranteed locked frame rate as fact is going beyond the documented evidence.

Which edition you need
The current-generation versions became available on October 8, 2026. 2K Support says eligible owners of Mafia III: Definitive Edition, Mafia: Trilogy, or Mafia: The Omertà Collection can obtain the current-generation edition at no additional cost under the platform-specific conditions in its support article. The free entitlement is not a reason to install an older build: the game tile, store page, and version information should identify the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition.
PS5 digital owners
- Open your PlayStation game library or the PlayStation Store while signed into the account that owns an eligible digital product.
- Search for Mafia III: Definitive Edition and inspect the edition label before downloading. Select the PS5 version when both PS4 and PS5 versions are offered.
- After installation, highlight the game on the PS5 home screen, open the options menu, and confirm that the installed version is the current-generation release rather than the PS4 application.
- Launch the game once and inspect its live Options menu. Do not expect a documented graphics-mode selector; the reviewed sources do not list one.
PS5 disc owners
2K’s instructions distinguish disc eligibility from digital eligibility. A disc owner needs a PS5 model with a disc drive, and the PS4 disc must remain inserted when playing the upgraded version. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot use a physical disc entitlement. If the PS5 store does not present the upgrade, check that the disc is inserted, that you are using the account associated with the eligible product, and that the console is connected to PlayStation Network.
Xbox owners
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the eligible digital copy.
- Find Mafia III: Definitive Edition for Xbox Series X|S in the Microsoft Store or your game library.
- Choose the Series X|S edition if the store presents more than one platform version, then install it to the internal console storage or an expansion location supported by your system.
- Once installed, open the game’s information panel and verify that the Series X|S edition is launching. The Xbox listing identifies this version as Series X|S optimized and advertises 60 FPS+.
The documented Xbox path applies to eligible digital copies. The reviewed support material does not provide a separate current-generation disc procedure, so do not infer one from the digital instructions.

Nothing in the official material supports calling one console smoother than the other. Both have a published 60 FPS claim, while the Xbox store adds its own capability wording. There is no documented platform-specific resolution or frame-pacing difference to use as a ranking.
The in-game Options menu: what it can and cannot tell you
The available Xbox One online manual lists four broad categories: Control, Gameplay, Audio, and Display. That manual is older documentation and does not enumerate current-generation performance controls. It is useful for understanding the game’s general option structure, but it cannot prove that the PS5 or Series X|S editions expose the same entries.
Control
Use Control settings for input preferences shown by your live installation. Changes here affect how commands are mapped or interpreted; they do not constitute a frame-rate setting. If an option appears on your console that is absent from the manual, follow the current in-game description and avoid assuming it changes rendering performance.

Gameplay
The manual documents a lethal-versus-non-lethal takedown choice. This is a gameplay preference, not a performance preset. Select the behavior you want for your playthrough; changing it is not expected to raise or lower the advertised frame-rate target.
Audio
Audio controls alter sound balance and output behavior. They are independent of the game’s published 60 FPS claim, so adjust them for your speakers or headset without treating them as optimization controls.
Display
Display entries should be read literally on your own console. The old manual’s category name does not establish a current-generation resolution selector, HDR switch, refresh-rate control, or field-of-view option. If your version shows a setting, use the accompanying description and record the original value before experimenting so you can restore it.

A safe setup procedure for smooth output
These steps stay within what the official evidence supports while giving you a repeatable way to eliminate avoidable setup errors.
- Confirm the platform build. Check the game tile, store page, or installed-version information for the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition. Do not tune an older PS4 or Xbox One installation and expect current-generation behavior.
- Finish the update before judging performance. Let the console complete the game download and any queued patch. Comparing an unfinished installation with the advertised current-generation edition can produce a misleading result.
- Start with the default in-game options. The reviewed sources do not identify a required performance preset. Defaults are therefore the only neutral baseline until your live Options menu presents a documented choice.
- Check the console’s display-output screen. Use the display information available on your PS5 or Xbox Series X|S to see what signal the console is sending to the television or monitor. The game’s 60 FPS wording does not by itself prove that the display is receiving a particular refresh-rate signal.
- Use the display’s normal gaming input. If your television or monitor has an input mode intended to reduce processing delay, select it according to the display manufacturer’s instructions. This changes the screen’s processing behavior, not the game’s internal frame-rate target.
- Test in the same conditions. If you are comparing two setups, use the same display, input, cable arrangement, and game area. The official sources provide no controlled benchmark, so informal impressions are not measurements.
- Change one option at a time. If the current-generation menu exposes an unfamiliar display setting, alter only that setting, note what changed, and revert it if the result is worse. Do not assume a label such as “quality” or “resolution” has a documented meaning unless the game explains it.
How to interpret a 60 FPS claim
A stated frame rate is a target or capability description, not a promise that every frame will arrive at exactly the same interval in every situation. 2K Support’s wording establishes that the current-generation editions were released with 60 FPS gameplay. The Xbox store’s “60 fps+” label communicates a capability in the listing. Neither source supplies a scene-by-scene test, a frame-time graph, a resolution, or a guarantee of a constant rate.
That distinction matters when you evaluate your own screen. A television may show a 60 Hz input while the game’s frame delivery varies, or it may apply processing that makes motion feel less responsive. Conversely, a display can report a suitable signal while an incorrectly installed older edition is still running. Treat the edition check and the display-output check as separate steps.

Troubleshooting branches
The game still looks or feels like the old console version
- Close the game completely and inspect the installed application’s platform label.
- Return to the store or library and select the PS5 or Series X|S product explicitly rather than launching a PS4 or Xbox One copy.
- Allow all downloads to finish, then restart the console before testing again.
- If the entitlement is missing, recheck the account that owns the eligible product. Disc-based PS5 owners should verify that the disc drive model is being used and that the PS4 disc is inserted.
You cannot find a performance or graphics toggle
That may be expected. The reviewed official sources do not document a current-generation Performance/Quality switch, resolution target, or frame-rate control. Check the live Options menu once for a platform-specific update; if no such entry exists, there is no supported value to enter.
The console reports an unexpected display signal
- Inspect the console’s display-output information while the game is closed and again after launching it.
- Check the television or monitor input selected, then confirm that the cable is connected to the intended console input.
- Temporarily return display settings to the console’s automatic or recommended values and retest. This provides a clean baseline without asserting a game-specific resolution.
- If the display continues to report a signal you do not expect, consult the display and console documentation; the reviewed Mafia III sources do not specify a required cable, refresh mode, or resolution.
Your previous progress is not present
This is an edition limitation, not a frame-rate problem. 2K Support says PS4 and Xbox One save files and achievements do not transfer to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. Plan to begin the current-generation release as a new save rather than repeatedly reinstalling the older build in search of a transfer option.
Motion still looks uneven after the correct edition is installed
First separate game behavior from display processing: test the same display with its normal gaming input and the console’s automatic output settings. Then compare only like-for-like sessions. No independent benchmark is published in the reviewed sources, so you should not diagnose a specific frame-pacing defect or claim a particular console is at fault from visual impression alone. If the problem persists, capture the exact edition name, console model, display model, and visible in-game options before contacting platform or publisher support.
Settings advice that should not be carried over from PC guides
PC recommendations such as lowering shadows, changing texture quality, editing configuration files, or setting an external frame cap do not apply automatically to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. The current-generation console documentation reviewed here does not list those controls. A PC guide can therefore be accurate for its platform while being irrelevant to this console question.
Likewise, do not treat a television’s advertised 120 Hz capability as proof that Mafia III is rendering above 60 FPS. The Xbox listing says “60 fps+,” but the official material does not establish a console-by-console maximum, a required 120 Hz mode, or a variable-refresh implementation.
