D&D Beyond uses “5e” for content based on the 2014 core rules, while it labels the 2024 revision “5.5e” (D&D Beyond Support). The 2024 monk changes features that affect item synergies, so this ranking should not be applied unchanged to a 2024 character.
There is no universal best item for every monk: the right choice depends on your current AC, subclass, campaign level, item availability, and open attunement slots. The picks below are ranked for their practical value to a 2014 monk, balancing direct combat benefits, defense, mobility, and the cost of acquiring or attuning to the item. They are a useful shortlist, not a fully verified ranking of 25 distinct items.
How to judge a magic item for a 2014 monk
The 2014 monk’s Martial Arts and Unarmored Defense features work without armor or a shield; using either can interfere with those benefits. That makes items that raise AC without armor particularly relevant. The monk’s unarmed strikes and monk weapons also create clear opportunities for items that improve attacks, add damage, or help the character reach a target.
- Direct combat synergy: Prefer effects that expressly improve unarmed strikes or useful monk-weapon attacks.
- Defense: Compare an AC benefit with the monk’s existing AC rather than assuming every defensive item is an upgrade.
- Mobility: Flight and movement effects can help a monk reach or reposition around targets. An effect that scales with walking speed may be especially useful.
- Cost and access: Rarity affects how likely an item is to appear in a campaign; attunement means it competes with other items that require a character’s attention.
- Build fit: Subclass features, campaign assumptions, and the edition in use can change an item’s value.
Eight strong magic-item picks for monks
The order below favors direct and broadly useful monk benefits, while noting when a pick depends heavily on a character’s build or campaign.

1. Eldritch claw tattoo
Rarity: Uncommon. Attunement: Required. This is one of the most direct fits for a monk: it makes unarmed strikes magical for overcoming resistance or immunity to nonmagical attacks and grants +1 to attack and damage rolls with those strikes. Its activated effect can extend the reach of attacks and add force damage. Those benefits speak directly to the monk’s core attack style, though the tattoo still uses an attunement slot. See the D&D Beyond monk-item guide for its described effects.
2. Bracers of defense
Rarity: Rare. Attunement: Required. The bracers grant +2 AC while the wearer is not wearing armor and using no shield, conditions that suit the 2014 monk’s usual approach to defense. Their practical value depends on the character’s existing AC and the cost of committing an attunement slot. D&D Beyond’s guide to monk items identifies this as a useful option for a class with armor and shield restrictions.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
3. Winged boots
Rarity and attunement: Not stated in the cited monk-item guide. The guide describes up to four hours of flight at a time, with two hours restored for every 12 hours the boots are not in use; flying speed equals walking speed. For a monk, matching walking speed means the flight can take advantage of the character’s mobility rather than imposing a slower pace. Flight is a positioning tool, not a direct increase to attack damage, and its value depends on whether the campaign’s encounters reward vertical movement or aerial access. Details here follow the D&D Beyond guide.
4. Cloak of displacement
Rarity: Rare. Attunement: Required. The cloak’s illusion makes attacks against its wearer harder to land, imposing disadvantage under the described conditions. The effect is temporarily suppressed after the wearer is hit and can be limited by other conditions, so it is not a guarantee of safety. It is a defensive option for a monk who wants to make incoming attacks less reliable, but it consumes attunement. See D&D Beyond’s item discussion.
Rank #3
- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
5. Staff of striking
Rarity: Very rare. Attunement: Required. The staff grants +3 to attack and damage rolls and has charges that can add force damage to a melee weapon hit. It can be attractive to a monk whose build and table allow the staff to serve as a monk weapon, but the high rarity makes it less accessible than the uncommon tattoo. Its value is more dependent on weapon use than the eldritch claw tattoo’s unarmed-strike benefits. The cited D&D Beyond guide describes these properties.
6. Barrier tattoo
Rarity: Varies by version. Attunement: Not stated in the cited monk-item guide. The tattoo sets an AC value according to its rarity, so it should be compared with the monk’s current Unarmored Defense AC before choosing it. It is not automatically better: a monk with a higher existing AC may get more value from another item. The guide likewise frames its usefulness as dependent on the character’s current AC.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
7. Gloves of soul catching
Rarity: Legendary. Attunement: Required. The guide describes the gloves as setting Constitution to 20 and adding force damage and healing to unarmed strikes. That combination connects unusually well to a monk’s unarmed attacks while also improving durability, but legendary rarity makes it a campaign-dependent prospect rather than a routine recommendation. See D&D Beyond’s description.
8. Blood fury tattoo
Rarity: Legendary. Attunement: Required. The tattoo has charges that can add necrotic damage to weapon hits and heal the wearer, as well as a reaction-based attack option, according to the D&D Beyond guide. It offers both offense and recovery, but its weapon-hit wording and legendary rarity make its fit more conditional than an item explicitly centered on unarmed strikes.

Why this is not a verified 25-item ranking
The available official monk-item guide covers a selection of defensive, offensive, and mobility choices, but it does not establish a rules-checked order for 25 distinct entries. Naming 17 more items and assigning ranks, rarities, attunement requirements, and monk interactions without checking their official text would give a false impression of precision. Treat the eight picks here as supported examples, not as a complete or exhaustive top 25.
Does this ranking apply to the 2024 monk?
No, not without reassessing the interactions. D&D Beyond labels the 2024 revision “5.5e” and highlights changes to Martial Arts, Monk’s Focus, and subclass features compared with the 2014 class (D&D Beyond’s edition comparison). The class is not identical across editions, so check the current rules text for the monk and each item before carrying over a ranking or assumed synergy.
Quick Recap
Checking an item against your character
- Confirm the edition: Check whether your table uses the 2014 monk or the 2024 revision before relying on a class-feature interaction.
- Read the item’s full rules text: Verify its rarity, attunement requirement, activation, duration, and exact wording in the applicable sourcebook or rules reference. The official 2014 Dungeon Master’s Guide is a relevant source for magic items and is marked as legacy content on D&D Beyond.
- Match it to your routine: Identify whether you mainly rely on unarmed strikes, monk weapons, defense, or movement, then choose an item that supports that priority.
- Compare opportunity costs: For an AC item, compare its benefit with your current AC; for an attuned item, consider what you would give up to use it.
- Check campaign availability: Rarity and the DM’s item distribution affect whether a theoretically strong option is realistic for your character.
