All the Mods 9: a large sandbox with guardrails
All the Mods 9 bundles a very large selection of mods with sensible defaults and a questbook. The book gives the pack a route through its systems, but it cannot remove the fact that you have many competing options. New players can easily spend an hour comparing power generation, storage, farming and transport systems before making progress.

ATM9 works best when you already understand basic modded concepts—such as automated resource processing or the idea of a shared power network—or when you are happy to learn by experimentation. It is a rewarding second pack after a vanilla-plus experience.

Fabulously Optimized: performance without a new game to learn
Fabulously Optimized is not a content pack in the usual sense. It keeps vanilla gameplay and concentrates on performance improvements. Choose it when your main problem is stutter, low frame rates or a desire for a smoother client, not a desire for new machines, dimensions or bosses.
Because it does not add a large content layer, it is the least disruptive first step. You can learn how a modded launcher profile works, keep your existing vanilla habits and decide later whether you want a content-heavy pack.
SkyFactory 4: a focused challenge in the sky
SkyFactory 4 starts you in a skyblock-style world with severe resource limits. That sounds intimidating, but the limitation creates a clear learning environment: every block, tree and automated process has a purpose. The pack is described as light and beginner-friendly, particularly for players who prefer a defined challenge over wandering a huge overworld.
Do not choose it if your idea of Minecraft is surveying mountains, villages and caves. Choose it if you enjoy turning a tiny starting platform into a self-sufficient factory.
Cobblemon: a creature-collecting focus
Cobblemon offers Pokémon-style creature collecting on Fabric and is described as family-friendly. It is a good fit when collecting, training and exploring with creatures is more appealing than learning a general-purpose technology or magic suite.
Because Cobblemon is a focused experience, it is easier to explain to a new player than a kitchen-sink pack. Confirm the Fabric profile and Minecraft version before installation, since it does not use the same loader target as BMC5.

Install the right profile: a no-surprises checklist
- Choose the exact pack edition. Write down the pack name, Minecraft version and loader shown on its current CurseForge or Modrinth page. “Better MC” alone is not enough; record “BMC5, 1.21.1, NeoForge” or “BMC4, 1.20.1, Forge.”
- Use a launcher that supports that loader. Create or import a profile for the pack rather than adding individual mods to a vanilla profile. A pack’s configuration files and dependency versions are part of the experience.
- Match the game version exactly. A profile for 1.21.1 is not interchangeable with 1.20.1 or 1.21.4. If the launcher offers several files, select the one whose version matches the pack page and any server you plan to join.
- Let the launcher install the loader and dependencies. Do not mix Forge, NeoForge and Fabric files manually unless the pack’s documentation explicitly tells you to. They are different mod-loading environments.
- Launch once before adding extras. Create a test world and confirm that the title screen, controls and recipe viewer work. This gives you a clean baseline if an extra shader, resource pack or client mod later causes a crash.
- Back up worlds before changing versions. A world opened in a newer or different mod environment may not load correctly in the old one. Keep a copy of the save outside the launcher’s instance folder.
First-hour plan for a new modded player
- Read the questbook or in-game guide before crafting randomly. In Enigmatica 9, ATM9 and Craft to Exile: Harmony, the quest system is the fastest way to identify the pack’s intended early milestones.
- Keep a simple storage area. Modded recipes use more intermediate materials than vanilla recipes. Label a few chests or adopt the pack’s early storage tools before your base fills with unmarked components.
- Explore in short trips. Better MC’s appeal is its added structures and biomes, but early deaths can erase progress. Carry only what you can replace and mark your base coordinates.
- Learn one system at a time. In a large pack, choose one immediate goal—food automation, ore processing, power or transport—and postpone the other tabs in the recipe browser.
- Change performance settings before adding mods. Lower render distance, simulation distance and visual effects first. If the pack remains unstable, test with shaders and optional client additions removed.
Common problems and how to fix them
The launcher says the mod is for the wrong version
Recheck both numbers and the loader. BMC5 requires the NeoForge 1.21.1 profile identified by the current listing, while BMC4 targets Forge 1.20.1. A similarly named file for Fabric or another Minecraft release will not substitute for it.
The game crashes before the menu
Start the unmodified pack profile. Remove any manually added mods, shaders or resource packs, then launch again. If the clean profile works, add extras one at a time. If it does not, reinstall the profile from the current official listing rather than combining files from different editions.
The pack runs but feels slow
Use Fabulously Optimized when performance is your primary goal, or select a lighter pack such as Better MC or SkyFactory 4 instead of ATM10. Within any pack, reduce view and simulation distances, close other memory-heavy applications and avoid judging performance while the world is generating new terrain.
I cannot find the build mentioned in an old guide
Pack names and loaders change. Search the current official CurseForge or Modrinth listing by the pack name, then select the file whose Minecraft version and loader match your profile. Older articles may combine releases that are now separate, and third-party pages may mention unconfirmed Fabric variants.
