Use A Life of Labor + Grit for Assault and Soldier, Anticipation + Grit for Gunslinger, Taunt + Grit for Heavy, Anticipation + Espionage for Medic, Anticipation + Cold-Blooded for Scoundrel, Anticipation + Sabotage for Scout, and Cold-Blooded + The Bigger They Are… for Sharpshooter. These are starting points, not permanent answers for every map: objective, cover, enemy composition and the Operator’s Custom or Authored status should determine the final choice.
In Zero Company, “modifiers” covers two systems. Operator Talents change an individual’s battlefield profile, while Campaign Modifiers change the rules of an entire campaign. This guide explains both and provides challenge packages for Patch 1.2.

How modifiers work in Zero Company
Operators are assembled from Talents, Specializations and Weapon Classes. Talents can improve survivability, damage or campaign rewards, so the best pairing starts with the job you expect that Operator to perform rather than with a tier list. The official EA squad guide also distinguishes Custom Operators from Authored Operators: Custom characters offer more editing freedom, while many features of Authored Operators are fixed.

Every Operator has three action points (AP) on a turn. Moving, attacking, using Call for Backup and entering Overwatch all compete for that same budget, as explained in the official gameplay guide. A defensive Talent can therefore be a damage choice: surviving one extra enemy turn may preserve the AP needed to finish an objective, revive an ally or establish Overwatch.

There is no squad that is best for every Tactical Mission. EA states that directly in its squad guide, and deployment should change with the objective, enemy type and battlefield layout. Treat the combinations below as role templates that you adjust when the map makes a different risk more important.
Quick reference: recommended Talent pairings
| Role | Recommended combination | Primary job supported | Situational alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assault | A Life of Labor + Grit | Close-range pressure with extra durability | Anticipation for an evasion-focused map |
| Gunslinger | Anticipation + Grit | Mobile damage while exposed after spending AP | A Life of Labor for a sturdier baseline |
| Heavy | Taunt + Grit | Threat control and survival under retaliation | Anticipation when evasion is more valuable than threat control |
| Medic | Anticipation + Espionage | Safe support actions plus Intel generation | Thievery for credit-focused campaigns |
| Scoundrel | Anticipation + Cold-Blooded | Flanking survivability and burst damage | Grit for a safer, less damage-focused profile |
| Scout | Anticipation + Sabotage | Forward positioning and planned explosive damage | Espionage or Thievery when campaign economy matters more |
| Sharpshooter | Cold-Blooded + The Bigger They Are… | Reliable critical burst against priority targets | Anticipation on exposed sniper positions |
| Soldier | A Life of Labor + Grit | Durable all-round combat performance | Anticipation for an avoidance-oriented build |
What each important Talent contributes
A Life of Labor
A Life of Labor adds 5 health and 1 defense. That combination raises the amount of punishment an Operator can absorb and improves the baseline protection that applies before a special defensive window is needed. It is especially useful for Assault and Soldier, who often need to remain useful while operating closer to danger than a back-line specialist.
Grit
Grit adds 2 health and grants one invulnerable stack once per turn. The stack is most valuable when an Operator must expose themselves to complete an attack, draw fire or cross a dangerous lane. Pairing Grit with Taunt converts Heavy’s threat generation into a more dependable defensive plan; pairing it with A Life of Labor gives a generalist both a larger health pool and a once-per-turn damage-prevention resource.
Anticipation
Anticipation improves evasion. It is the broadest defensive alternative when the map rewards movement, concealment and avoiding attacks rather than absorbing them. Mobile damage dealers such as Gunslinger and Scoundrel benefit after they spend AP attacking, while Medic and Scout can use it to survive the forward positioning their support or reconnaissance duties require.
Taunt
Taunt draws enemy pressure toward the Heavy. Its natural partner is Grit: Taunt makes retaliation more likely, and Grit supplies extra health plus an invulnerable stack to help the Heavy endure that retaliation. If the mission instead rewards slipping past enemies, holding a narrow angle or avoiding focus fire, Anticipation can replace Grit.
Cold-Blooded
Cold-Blooded creates a guaranteed critical-hit window. It is a burst tool rather than a general defense, so it is strongest on roles that can convert one high-value attack into a decisive swing. Sharpshooter has the clearest use, but Scoundrel can exploit it after reaching a flank.
The Bigger They Are…
The Bigger They Are… adds 2 damage against elite and boss enemies. It is a target-dependent Talent: its value rises when the mission contains a named priority target and falls when most encounters are made up of ordinary enemies. Combined with Cold-Blooded, it gives Sharpshooter a reliable critical window and extra damage where the target has the most health or importance.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Espionage and Thievery
These Talents turn a combat role into a campaign-resource role. Espionage grants 5 Intel after a combat mission, while Thievery grants 150 credits after a combat mission. The rewards make sense on an Operator who is already expected to survive and participate in missions, not on a character you leave behind simply to collect a bonus. Medic is the cleanest Espionage pairing because support duties encourage repeated mission participation; Thievery is the alternative when credits are the campaign bottleneck.
Sabotage
Sabotage rewards planning around explosive objects. It is most effective on a Scout who can move forward, identify a useful explosive position and make the rest of the squad ready to capitalize on it. On maps without meaningful explosive opportunities, Anticipation still helps, but Sabotage becomes a situational rather than a defining advantage.

Fortitude
Fortitude is one of the ten recruitable Talents identified by PC Gamer, alongside The Bigger They Are…, Anticipation, Cold-Blooded, Taunt, A Life of Labor, Thievery, Sabotage, Espionage and Grit. The published role recommendations do not assign Fortitude to a specific pairing, so it should be treated as a flexible option when its in-game description matches a particular Operator or mission need rather than as a universal replacement for the combinations above.
Best combinations by squad role
Assault: A Life of Labor + Grit
Assault is the close-range pressure role. A Life of Labor provides the larger health pool and extra defense needed to operate near hostile positions, while Grit adds another 2 health and an invulnerable stack once per turn. Together they make the Assault less dependent on perfect cover after using AP to close distance or attack.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose Anticipation instead of one of these Talents when the map offers long sight lines, multiple routes and enough room to avoid incoming attacks. Evasion is preferable to raw durability when the Assault can keep moving between attacks and does not need to hold a fixed lane.
Gunslinger: Anticipation + Grit
Gunslinger spends AP on attacks and movement, which can leave the Operator exposed at the end of the turn. Anticipation supplies an avoidance layer, and Grit supplies health plus a once-per-turn invulnerable stack when an enemy still connects. The pairing supports a mobile damage dealer without requiring the Gunslinger to stop attacking merely to remain safe.
A Life of Labor is the alternative for missions where the Gunslinger must hold a position, trade shots repeatedly or operate under sustained focus fire. It produces a sturdier baseline but gives up the evasion emphasis.
Heavy: Taunt + Grit
Heavy is the role most naturally tied to Taunt. Drawing pressure can protect a more fragile squad member or keep enemies from reaching an objective, but it also makes the Heavy the likely target of retaliation. Grit is therefore the natural second Talent: +2 health and one invulnerable stack each turn help the Heavy survive the attention Taunt creates.
Use Anticipation when threat control is not the mission’s main problem. A map with broken sight lines, flanking routes or a movement-heavy objective may reward avoiding attacks rather than deliberately attracting them.
Medic: Anticipation + Espionage
Medic often has to move toward an injured ally, spend AP on a revive or heal, and then survive the enemy turn. Anticipation protects that support route through evasion. Espionage adds 5 Intel after a combat mission, making the Medic useful to the campaign economy without changing the support job performed during the battle.
Replace Espionage with Thievery when credits matter more than Intel in the current campaign. Both resource Talents require the Operator to take part in combat missions, so do not select one for a Medic who is routinely benched.

Scoundrel: Anticipation + Cold-Blooded
Scoundrel’s flanking profile exposes the Operator while they seek a high-value angle. Anticipation reduces the punishment for that forward position, and Cold-Blooded supplies a guaranteed critical-hit window for the turn when the flank is ready. This is the most damage-oriented pairing among the mobile roles.
Grit is the safer replacement for Cold-Blooded when the Scoundrel must stay in contested territory for several turns or when a failed burst would leave the squad without a durable front line.
Scout: Anticipation + Sabotage
Scout benefits from Anticipation because reconnaissance frequently means moving ahead of the main group. Sabotage adds payoff when the map contains explosive objects that can be prepared or triggered as part of the plan. The combination is strongest on objective layouts where the Scout can reach a useful position before the enemy cluster is settled.
Use Espionage or Thievery instead when the campaign economy is the priority and the mission offers few meaningful explosive interactions. That choice changes the reward profile without requiring the Scout to abandon forward positioning.
Sharpshooter: Cold-Blooded + The Bigger They Are…
This is the clearest single-target pairing. Cold-Blooded creates a guaranteed critical window, while The Bigger They Are… adds 2 damage against elite and boss enemies. Reserve the critical opportunity for the priority target rather than spending it on a low-value enemy when an elite or boss will enter the Sharpshooter’s line of fire.
Anticipation can replace either Talent on a map where the sniper is frequently exposed, forced to relocate or threatened by enemies that can reach the firing position. A dead Sharpshooter contributes no burst damage, so the damage pairing is not automatically correct when the geometry denies safe firing lanes.
Soldier: A Life of Labor + Grit
Soldier is the durable all-rounder. A Life of Labor’s +5 health and +1 defense improve the base profile, and Grit adds +2 health plus a once-per-turn invulnerable stack. The result is a dependable Operator for missions that do not offer a single narrow job but still require someone to remain effective through several exchanges.
Anticipation gives Soldier a more avoidance-oriented profile. Select it when the battlefield supports frequent repositioning and the Soldier can avoid attacks instead of absorbing them.
How to choose between survivability, burst and campaign economy
Choose durability when the role must hold ground
Pick A Life of Labor and Grit when the Operator is expected to stand in a contested lane, draw fire, or keep working after a failed movement or attack. Their health, defense and damage-prevention effects are reliable even when the map does not provide a convenient escape route.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Choose evasion when AP is spent on movement and attacks
Anticipation is better when the Operator’s survival depends on not being hit. It suits mobile roles, exposed support routes and maps with several viable positions. Remember that movement and attacks both consume AP, so a build that requires constant repositioning can be more reliable than one that assumes the Operator will always end a turn in perfect cover.
Choose burst when a priority target decides the mission
Cold-Blooded and The Bigger They Are… are most valuable when removing one elite or boss changes the rest of the encounter. If the mission instead contains many ordinary enemies, defensive Talents may produce more total value over several turns.
Choose resource Talents when the Operator will deploy repeatedly
Espionage and Thievery pay after a combat mission. They are campaign investments, not immediate combat defenses. Put them on an Operator you can deploy consistently and select the resource that matches the campaign’s current need: 5 Intel from Espionage or 150 credits from Thievery.

Patch 1.2 was published on October 15, 2026. Campaign Modifiers are selected in Difficulty Settings when starting a new campaign and activate after the tutorial. They alter campaign-wide rules rather than one Operator’s Talent loadout. The EA patch notes recommend starting with default rules on Normal before adding modifications, so these packages are challenge presets, not universal best settings.

Build-lock challenge
Enable Locked Talent Respec, Locked Tactical Respec and Locked Weapon Respec. This package makes early decisions persistent. It is appropriate when the point of the run is commitment to a roster plan, and it makes the role pairings above more consequential because you cannot freely correct a poor choice later.
Accuracy-pressure challenge
Enable Assist Shots Can Miss and Enemies Can Critically Hit. Backup attacks are no longer guaranteed, and enemy critical hits increase the cost of careless exposure. Anticipation, cover and deliberate positioning become more important than they are under default rules. This package is a good intermediate challenge for players who want tactical variance without permanent death.
Advantage-denial challenge
Enable No Advantage from Assist Attacks and Reduced Advantage from Damage. These settings reduce the snowball created by backup attacks and damage generation. A squad must earn momentum through positioning and target selection rather than assuming that every assist will increase its advantage.
Permadeath challenge
Instant Death is the strongest loss rule by itself. An Operator defeated in Tactical Mission combat is permanently killed; Operations injuries are excluded. Add the lockout modifiers only if you deliberately want an especially severe run. The official guide calls permadeath optional and says it encourages using it, but it remains a choice with a much higher cost for every risky attack.
Measured veteran run
Use Locked Tactical Respec with Assist Shots Can Miss. This package tests planning and tactical variance while stopping short of permanent death. It is a practical bridge between a standard Normal campaign and a full lockout or Instant Death run.

Matching modifier packages to the mission
- Dense cover and short sight lines: durability and Taunt become more useful because enemies can reach the squad quickly.
- Open maps with several firing lanes: Anticipation helps mobile Operators survive while moving between positions; Sharpshooter needs a safe lane before committing to a burst pairing.
- Elite or boss encounter: Cold-Blooded plus The Bigger They Are… gives Sharpshooter the most direct priority-target plan.
- Explosive-object objective: Anticipation plus Sabotage lets Scout reach and exploit the map’s planned damage source.
- Long campaign with repeated combat deployments: Espionage or Thievery can compound after each combat mission, provided the support Operator is regularly deployed.
- Objective requiring a revive or fixed hold: Medic with Anticipation, or a front-line Operator with A Life of Labor and Grit, is less likely to lose the AP needed for the objective after taking damage.
Custom and Authored Operators
Before committing to a respec-lock campaign, check whether the character is Custom or Authored. Custom Operators are more editable. Authored Operators can have fixed features, so a theoretically ideal Talent pairing may not be available in the same way. Build around the options the character actually permits, then compensate with squadmates who cover the missing function.
For example, if an Authored front-line character cannot be adjusted into the exact A Life of Labor and Grit combination, a Heavy with Taunt and Grit can take the threat-control job while a mobile ally uses Anticipation to handle exposed approaches. The squad should cover jobs collectively rather than forcing every Operator into an identical template.
Common mistakes and corrections
Using one “best” pairing on every map
A defensive Heavy build can be wrong on a mission where evasion and movement matter more than drawing fire. Recheck the objective and geometry before deployment.

Choosing a resource Talent for a rarely deployed Operator
Espionage and Thievery pay after combat missions. Put them on a role that will actually deploy; otherwise the campaign bonus is theoretical.
Stacking challenge modifiers before learning default rules
Patch 1.2 recommends default Normal rules first. Learn how Assist Shots, enemy critical hits, respecs and advantage interact before adding lockouts or Instant Death.
Ignoring the three-AP economy
Every move, attack, Call for Backup and Overwatch decision competes for three AP. A Talent that keeps an Operator alive after spending all three points can be more valuable than a larger damage number that requires the character to remain exposed.

- Identify the Operator’s job for this mission: hold ground, flank, support, scout, generate resources or remove a priority target.
- Inspect the map for cover, sight lines, explosive objects and routes that force exposure.
- Choose durability when the Operator must absorb or draw fire; choose Anticipation when avoiding attacks is realistic.
- Reserve Cold-Blooded and The Bigger They Are… for missions where an elite or boss is a meaningful target.
- Use Espionage or Thievery only on an Operator you expect to deploy through several combat missions.
- If using Campaign Modifiers, decide how much failure should cost before selecting lockouts, accuracy pressure or Instant Death.
- For Custom Operators, make the role fit the Talent choices; for Authored Operators, build the rest of the squad around their fixed features.
Final recommendation
Start with the role pairings in the reference table, then change one Talent when the mission presents a clear reason: Anticipation for exposure and movement, Grit or A Life of Labor for sustained focus fire, Cold-Blooded for a decisive critical window, The Bigger They Are… for elite and boss targets, Sabotage for explosive-object plans, and Espionage or Thievery for a campaign economy strategy. Apply Campaign Modifiers separately. They should express the kind of challenge you want—commitment, accuracy pressure, reduced advantage or permadeath—not dictate every Operator’s Talent choice.
