For a smooth GTA 6 picture on a budget Samsung monitor, start with the panel’s native resolution, select the highest refresh rate that both the monitor and console support at that resolution, enable Game Mode, and switch on FreeSync or VRR when both devices are compatible. Connect the console through the Samsung monitor’s appropriate HDMI input with a certified cable that meets its bandwidth requirement.

Those settings reduce avoidable scaling, input delay, tearing and stutter without pretending that every Samsung display can run at 120 or 144 Hz. Rockstar Games confirms that Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Final display modes, frame-rate behavior and patches are not yet published, so use this as a model-aware baseline rather than a GTA VI-specific preset.

What you can set confidently before GTA 6 launches

Rockstar’s official information confirms PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the pre-order platforms and gives November 19, 2026, as the launch date. The published material does not provide a PC version’s system requirements, an official GTA VI frame-rate target or a dedicated monitor preset. That means the best preparation is to configure the signal chain correctly and let the console expose only modes that the monitor can actually display.

A “budget Samsung monitor” is not one specification. Models sold under that description may be 60 Hz, 75 Hz, 100 Hz, 120 Hz or higher, with different native resolutions, HDMI versions and VRR support. Read the label on the rear of the monitor, its on-screen information page and the model’s specification sheet before choosing a number. A setting that is unavailable at the panel’s native resolution should not be forced.

The recommended baseline, at a glance

Setting Recommended starting point Why it helps Important qualification
Resolution Monitor’s native resolution Avoids unnecessary scaling and preserves the panel’s intended sharpness. The console must offer that resolution; a lower mode may be necessary if a game or display combination does not support it.
Refresh rate Highest rate supported by both the Samsung display and the console at the selected resolution Higher refresh can make camera movement and animation look smoother. Do not assume 120 or 144 Hz. The model, HDMI input and resolution determine the real ceiling.
Game Mode On Uses the monitor’s gaming signal path and can reduce processing that adds delay. Samsung menu names and available controls differ by model.
FreeSync/VRR On when the monitor and console both support it Matches the display’s refresh timing to changing frame delivery, reducing tearing and uneven motion. Compatibility, HDMI bandwidth and firmware can limit whether the option appears.
Connection Console connected directly to a suitable HDMI input Preserves the console’s supported resolution, refresh and VRR features. Use a certified HDMI cable that meets the Samsung model’s required bandwidth; adapters and older cables can remove modes.

Set the Samsung monitor first

1. Identify the exact model and input limits

Find the model code on the rear label or in the monitor’s information menu. Note the native resolution, maximum refresh rate at that resolution, HDMI version or bandwidth, and whether FreeSync or another VRR option is listed. Check each HDMI input separately if the specification distinguishes them. Some monitors expose their fastest mode only on one port.

Disconnect intermediate equipment while setting up. A soundbar, capture device, switch or receiver can advertise a lower capability to the console even when the monitor itself supports more. Once the direct connection works, add other equipment one piece at a time and recheck the console’s available modes.

2. Choose the native resolution

Open the Samsung on-screen display and leave resolution-related options at their native or recommended value. On the console, select the output resolution that matches the panel when that option is available. Native output avoids a second scaling step and generally gives the cleanest HUD and text. If the monitor is a 1440p model but the console offers only 1080p or 4K output for a particular game, use the mode the console and display negotiate successfully; do not claim a nonexistent native signal.

3. Turn on Game Mode

Samsung places Game Mode among its gaming controls, but the path and label vary. Look under the monitor’s Game, Picture or System menu for Game Mode, Low Input Lag or a similarly named option. Enable the gaming mode, then check whether it disables picture-processing features such as motion smoothing or dynamic contrast. That trade-off is normally desirable for a controller-driven game: consistent timing is more valuable than extra processing.

4. Enable FreeSync or VRR where supported

Enable the Samsung monitor’s FreeSync/Adaptive-Sync option before configuring the console. If the monitor presents a range rather than a simple on/off switch, use the normal or standard range first. An “ultimate” range, overclock option or similar setting is model-specific; enable it only if the manual confirms console compatibility and the image remains stable.

Samsung 24" Odyssey G3 (G30D) Series FHD Gaming Monitor
  • REACT IN REAL TIME: 180Hz refresh rate eliminates lag for exhilarating gameplay with ultrasmooth action; 1ms response time (MPRT) provides frames with minimal blur, allowing you to jump on enemies right when you see them¹
  • STAY IN SYNC WITH THE ACTION: AMD Radeon FreeSync keeps your monitor and graphics card refresh rate in sync to reduce image tearing; Watch movies and play games without interruptions; Even the fastest scenes look seamless and smooth²
  • DISCOVER ENEMIES IN THE SHADOWS WITH BETTER VISIBILITY: Black Equalizer allows you to adjust dark areas in games, letting you spot your enemies in even the darkest hiding nooks²
  • A NEW LEVEL OF ACCURACY: Line up more accurate shots with Virtual Aim Point; Crosshairs on the screen give you a new level of accuracy in any game, when precision can mean the difference between life and death²
  • FRESH EYES WIN MORE: Eye Saver Mode minimizes blue light to help keep your eyes relaxed and comfortable when gaming for extended periods; The Odyssey G3 also reduces irritating and frustrating screen flicker, so you can focus longer²

VRR works only when the source device can send a variable-refresh signal. If the monitor’s VRR menu is unavailable, greyed out or causes a blank screen, turn it off and establish a stable fixed-refresh connection before testing again.

5. Leave advanced picture controls conservative

Start with the Samsung’s default picture profile inside Game Mode. Set brightness for the room and keep contrast, sharpness, color temperature and local-dimming controls at neutral or documented values before making aesthetic adjustments. Excessive sharpness can create halos around text; aggressive dynamic contrast can make dark scenes fluctuate. These controls do not create additional frames, so fix signal timing first.

Configure the console output

PlayStation 5

  1. Connect the PS5 directly to the Samsung monitor with the certified HDMI cable.
  2. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  3. Set Resolution to Automatic or to the monitor’s native resolution if the display reports it correctly.
  4. Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic. The option cannot make a 60 Hz monitor run at 120 Hz; it merely allows the console to use 120 Hz when the display and game support it.
  5. Set VRR to Automatic only after the monitor’s FreeSync/VRR control is enabled. If the screen flickers or loses sync, disable VRR and test a fixed refresh.
  6. Use Test 4K Output or the console’s information screen to verify the negotiated resolution, HDR and refresh capabilities. Treat the reported mode as the connection’s actual limit, not the monitor’s advertised maximum in another configuration.

Xbox Series X|S

  1. Connect the console directly to the Samsung monitor’s HDMI input that supports the required bandwidth.
  2. Open Settings > General > TV & display options.
  3. Choose the monitor’s native or negotiated Resolution.
  4. Open Refresh rate and select the highest value that the compatibility panel accepts at that resolution.
  5. Open Video modes and enable Allow variable refresh rate when the monitor is confirmed compatible. Enable Allow 4K or Allow HDR only if the Samsung model supports those signals at the selected refresh rate.
  6. Use 4K TV details to see which combinations the console recognizes. If a mode disappears after enabling HDR or VRR, the HDMI port, cable or bandwidth is the limiting factor.

Console menu labels can change with system software. The governing rule is unchanged: select a mode that both devices report as supported, then verify the resulting signal in the monitor’s information page.

Why refresh rate, FPS and VRR affect smoothness

Refresh rate is how often the monitor can redraw its image; frame rate is how often the console delivers a new game frame. Samsung explains that high refresh and high FPS together produce smoother animation with less flicker. When frame delivery and refresh timing do not match, the result can be stutter or tearing.

With a fixed 60 Hz setting, a game that cannot deliver frames at an even cadence may show repeated frames or a visible split between two frames. A higher fixed rate gives the system more presentation opportunities, but it does not guarantee that a game will render more frames. VRR changes the display’s refresh timing so each frame can be presented when it arrives within the monitor’s supported range. It is particularly useful when frame time varies during driving, combat or crowded scenes.

VRR is not an FPS booster. It cannot raise a game’s frame-rate limit, compensate for a console that is rendering below the monitor’s minimum VRR range, or repair an HDMI link that is dropping signal. If the game leaves the VRR range, the console and monitor fall back to their normal fixed-refresh behavior.

Choosing the right resolution and refresh combination

Situation Best first choice What to watch
60 Hz Samsung monitor Native resolution at 60 Hz, Game Mode on, VRR on if supported Do not select a higher number through an unsupported custom mode. A stable 60 Hz signal is preferable to intermittent black screens.
75 or 100 Hz model Native resolution at the highest console-approved rate The console may offer only 60 Hz at that resolution, especially when HDR or another video feature is enabled.
120 Hz model Native resolution at 120 Hz when the console’s compatibility test approves it; otherwise use the highest accepted rate A 120 Hz output option does not mean every game renders at 120 FPS. Final GTA VI behavior is not published.
144 Hz or faster model Use the console’s maximum supported rate, commonly below the monitor’s PC maximum PS5 and Xbox Series X|S connect over HDMI, so the HDMI port’s capability matters more than a DisplayPort headline specification.
High-resolution mode causes instability Step down one variable at a time: HDR, then refresh rate, then resolution Record the last stable combination and check the cable and input before sacrificing resolution.

For console play, HDMI compatibility is decisive. DisplayPort specifications can describe a monitor’s computer capability without saying anything about what a PS5 or Xbox can negotiate through HDMI. Prefer the HDMI port and cable combination documented for the Samsung model.

Cable and bandwidth checklist

  • Use a certified HDMI cable rated for the resolution, refresh rate and HDR/VRR combination you intend to use.
  • Keep the console connected directly to the monitor while troubleshooting.
  • Try the Samsung input identified as the high-bandwidth port, if the model has one.
  • Inspect both connectors for looseness and avoid sharply bending the cable near the plug.
  • Replace an unknown or damaged cable before changing several settings at once.

Samsung notes that FreeSync can operate over HDMI, while G-Sync implementations require DisplayPort. That distinction is mainly relevant to computers; PS5 and Xbox Series X|S use HDMI. For a console, match the Samsung model’s HDMI bandwidth and use a certified compatible cable rather than buying a cable solely because its package advertises a higher refresh number.

Troubleshoot tearing, stutter and blank screens

If you see horizontal tearing

  1. Confirm that Game Mode is enabled.
  2. Enable FreeSync/VRR in the Samsung menu and variable refresh in the console menu.
  3. Confirm the console is connected directly by HDMI and that the monitor reports VRR as active.
  4. If tearing remains, test a fixed refresh rate. A game or firmware combination may be outside the monitor’s VRR range.

If motion stutters despite VRR

  • Check whether the console is actually outputting the selected refresh rate; the monitor’s information screen should show the live signal.
  • Return the monitor to native resolution and disable nonessential picture processing.
  • Test without HDR, a switch, receiver or capture device to isolate bandwidth negotiation.
  • Remember that VRR smooths timing variation but cannot remove a game’s own frame-time spikes.

If the screen goes black or says “no signal”

  1. Power off the console and monitor, reseat both HDMI ends, then power the monitor on before the console.
  2. Use the cable and HDMI port documented for the Samsung display.
  3. On PS5 or Xbox, return to Automatic resolution and 60 Hz, then add higher refresh, HDR and VRR one at a time.
  4. If the monitor has an HDMI compatibility, input version or deep-color toggle, use the setting specified in its manual; menu names differ by model.

If the image looks soft

Verify that the console is sending the panel’s native resolution rather than a lower scaled mode. Disable monitor sharpness enhancements that create halos, and check that the game itself is not using a performance or resolution mode that changes its internal rendering. A monitor cannot restore detail that the game or console has not rendered.

Comparison axis Question to ask Why it matters for PS5 or Xbox
Refresh rate What is the maximum rate at the native resolution through HDMI? A panel’s computer-oriented maximum may not be available from a console.
VRR/FreeSync Is variable refresh supported over HDMI, and what range is documented? VRR can reduce tearing and uneven pacing when frame delivery changes.
Native resolution What resolution does the panel actually have? Native output avoids unnecessary scaling and makes text and interfaces clearer.
HDMI version and bandwidth Which HDMI input supports the desired resolution, refresh, HDR and VRR together? PS5 and Xbox Series X|S use HDMI; DisplayPort capacity alone is not enough.
Game Mode behavior Does Game Mode provide a low-processing path, and which controls does it disable? Consistent input timing is more useful than decorative processing for action games.
Price Is the cost for a recurring retail price or a temporary promotion? Compare like-for-like specifications and treat sale pricing as time-limited.

Do not rank a display solely by 144 Hz versus 120 Hz. If both exceed the console’s practical output or one lacks HDMI VRR, the extra panel number may provide no benefit for this use.

What is still unknown about GTA 6 display performance

As of the information currently published by Rockstar Games, there is no official GTA VI PC specification, console frame-rate target, resolution-performance menu description or monitor-specific preset. No independent benchmark figure establishes how the game will behave on a particular Samsung display. Avoid guides that promise a fixed 120 FPS mode, a guaranteed 4K output or a universal “GTA 6” color profile before Rockstar documents those details.

When the game launches, check its own graphics options and the console’s live output information. A patch may add or alter performance modes, HDR behavior or VRR handling. Update the console, the game and, where Samsung provides one, the monitor firmware before judging a setting.

Launch-day setup checklist

  1. Record the Samsung model, native resolution, HDMI input capabilities and supported VRR range.
  2. Connect the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S directly with a certified HDMI cable matched to that requirement.
  3. Set the monitor to its native resolution and enable Game Mode.
  4. Enable FreeSync/VRR on the monitor, then enable VRR on the console if the compatibility test approves it.
  5. Select the highest refresh rate that remains available at the chosen resolution and other required features.
  6. Verify the negotiated signal in the monitor information page and the console’s video-output screen.
  7. Play a demanding scene for several minutes, watching for tearing, flicker, black screens or uneven pacing.
  8. If a problem appears, return to the last stable mode and add HDR, higher refresh or VRR separately to identify the limiting link.

Bottom line for a budget Samsung monitor

Use native resolution, the highest mutually supported HDMI refresh rate, Game Mode and HDMI VRR/FreeSync when available. This setup addresses the causes you can control—scaling, excess monitor processing, mismatched timing and inadequate cabling—without inventing a GTA VI performance target that Rockstar has not announced. Recheck the settings after launch because the final game modes, patches and model-specific Samsung menus may change.
