If you want the clearest starting point, play Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, then Middle-earth: Shadow of War. They are Monolith Productions’ defining modern action-adventure games: the first introduces the Nemesis System, while the sequel expands it with larger-scale army building and fortress battles. If you prefer horror or classic shooters, Monolith’s earlier standouts include F.E.A.R., Condemned: Criminal Origins, Condemned 2: Bloodshot, and Blood.
Which Monolith game should you play first?
For most players, Shadow of Mordor is the best entry point. Its open-world action centers on a personal feud with the enemies you encounter, and it is the game that introduced Monolith’s Nemesis System. Continue with Shadow of War if you want that system expanded into a broader campaign involving an army and the conquest of fortresses.

There is no objective all-time ranking behind “best”: the right choice depends on whether you want fantasy adventure, horror-tinged action, or an older shooter. WB Games’ retrospective names these games as part of Monolith’s history; it is a useful selection, not a complete catalog or independent ranking. Monolith Productions was founded in 1994, according to that retrospective.
The best Monolith games by what you want to play
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor — best starting point
Released in 2014, Shadow of Mordor introduced the Nemesis System, which makes enemy rivalries a central part of the open-world experience. Its Game of the Year Edition adds the story missions The Lord of the Hunt and The Bright Lord, as well as Trials of War challenges, Warband Missions, Runes, and Skins, according to WB Games. The publisher also says the game received over 50 “Best of 2014” awards; that is WB’s reported count, not an independently audited measure of quality.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War — best for a larger-scale sequel
Released in 2017, Shadow of War expands the Nemesis System. Its official premise emphasizes building an army, operating behind enemy lines, and conquering fortresses in Mordor. Choose it after Shadow of Mordor if you want a larger expression of the same enemy-and-rival concept; choose it first if fortress battles are the main draw. WB Games describes the system’s aim as enabling personal, player-driven stories in an open world in its 25-year Monolith retrospective.
F.E.A.R. — for horror-tinged action
F.E.A.R. is one of the studio’s best-known departures from Middle-earth. WB’s retrospective includes it among Monolith’s notable games, making it a natural pick for players seeking a darker action experience rather than fantasy open-world exploration. The retrospective does not provide a detailed genre breakdown or a ranked assessment.

Condemned: Criminal Origins and Condemned 2: Bloodshot — for a darker action legacy
WB’s retrospective names Condemned: Criminal Origins (2005) and its follow-up, Condemned 2: Bloodshot (2008). They broaden the list for players interested in Monolith’s horror-tinged action history. The available official overview does not establish which entry is better, so the choice can come down to whether you want the original or its sequel.
Blood — for an earlier shooter
Blood (1997) is the pick for readers curious about Monolith’s earlier shooter work. It shows how far the studio’s catalog reaches beyond its later Middle-earth games; it is a different era and style, not a direct substitute for the Nemesis-focused adventures.

If you prefer a contemporary editorial ranking, GamesRadar’s June 2026 list of Lord of the Rings games placed Shadow of War above Shadow of Mordor, praising its broader Nemesis interactions and fortress battles. That is GamesRadar’s editorial judgment, not a consensus ranking or review-score aggregate: GamesRadar’s list.
