A PCIe 4.0 primary graphics slot is the sensible baseline for a 2024 build. PCIe 5.0 may help with future graphics cards or storage, but it is not required for an RTX 4060 and should not be expected to deliver a meaningful gaming improvement with this GPU. NVIDIA positions the RTX 4060 primarily as a 1080p card and lists average gaming power consumption of 110W; the graphics card itself does not justify an enthusiast motherboard. NVIDIA’s RTX 4060 guide also notes that many dual-fan models suit compact systems.

Best overall AMD motherboard: MSI B650 Gaming Plus WiFi
The MSI B650 Gaming Plus WiFi is the best all-round choice for a new AMD build using a Ryzen 5 7600, Ryzen 5 7600X or another mainstream AM5 processor.
- AM5 socket and AMD B650 chipset
- Four DDR5 memory slots
- PCIe 4.0 graphics and M.2 connectivity
- Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3
- 2.5Gb Ethernet
- 20Gbps USB Type-C connectivity
- ATX form factor
Its main advantage is the AM5 upgrade path. In the 2024 context, it is primarily a Ryzen 7000/AM5 recommendation. MSI’s current product page also lists support for Ryzen 8000 and Ryzen 9000 processors, but that later support should be treated as a current specification rather than a launch-era 2024 fact.
The board provides more than enough power delivery and expansion capability for a mainstream Ryzen processor paired with an RTX 4060. Four DIMM slots and multiple M.2 positions also make it easier to expand memory and storage later.

Choose a cheaper B650 board if you do not need its Wi-Fi, networking, USB or expansion features. Choose AM4 instead if you already own a compatible Ryzen processor and DDR4 memory. The B650 Gaming Plus WiFi is a poor value if the board consumes money that could instead fund a stronger CPU, 32GB of RAM, a larger SSD or a better power supply.
Best Intel DDR5 motherboard: MSI B760 Gaming Plus WiFi
The MSI B760 Gaming Plus WiFi is a sensible Intel pairing for processors such as the Core i5-12400F, i5-12600K, i5-13400F and i5-13600K. It supports Intel’s 12th-, 13th- and 14th-generation desktop platform according to MSI’s current specifications.
- Intel B760 chipset and LGA1700 socket
- Four DDR5 memory slots
- PCIe 4.0 graphics connectivity
- PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 support
- Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3
- 2.5Gb Ethernet
- ATX form factor
B760 is generally a better fit than Z790 when CPU overclocking is not a priority. The board offers the connectivity most RTX 4060 systems need without charging specifically for enthusiast features that will not increase GPU frame rates.
Remember that this is the DDR5 version. MSI and other manufacturers sell similarly named LGA1700 boards for DDR4, but DDR4 and DDR5 versions are not interchangeable. Also check the exact board revision and BIOS support when buying a processor from the 14th-generation range, particularly if the board has older retail inventory.
LGA1700 supports a broad range of 12th- through 14th-generation CPUs, but it is a less attractive long-term upgrade platform than AM5 for a completely new 2024 build. It remains an excellent choice if an Intel processor better suits your budget or software.

Best budget and DDR4 motherboard: ASUS Prime B760M-A AX D4
The ASUS Prime B760M-A AX D4 is the best fit for an Intel buyer who already owns DDR4 memory, wants a micro-ATX system or is trying to reduce the total platform cost.
- Intel B760 chipset and LGA1700 socket
- DDR4 support
- Micro-ATX form factor
- PCIe 4.0 x16 primary graphics slot
- Two PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slots
- Wi-Fi 6
- 2.5Gb Ethernet
- Front USB Type-C support
It is a practical match for a Core i5-12400F or i5-13400F and an RTX 4060. Reusing a good DDR4 kit can make this platform substantially cheaper than buying a new CPU, motherboard and DDR5 memory together.
The exact D4 suffix matters. Do not assume that a similarly named ASUS B760 board supports the same memory type. Micro-ATX also provides fewer expansion slots than ATX, so check whether you need additional capture cards, sound cards or other PCIe devices.

Best AM4 option: a quality B550 board
Choose a good B550 motherboard when you already own an AM4 processor or DDR4 memory, or when the goal is the lowest-cost Ryzen 5000 system. Suitable pairings include the Ryzen 5 5600, Ryzen 7 5700X and Ryzen 7 5800X3D.
B550 is preferable to paying for an expensive X570 board in a typical RTX 4060 build. It provides modern PCIe 4.0 connectivity and broad Ryzen 5000 support while keeping the platform cost under control.
AM4 is not the default recommendation for a completely new build if the price difference from AM5 is small. AM5 uses DDR5 but offers a stronger future CPU upgrade path. AM4 makes the most sense as a reuse or value platform, not because it improves RTX 4060 performance.
How to choose the right motherboard
1. Start with the CPU socket
The processor determines the motherboard platform. Ryzen 7000 processors use AM5; Ryzen 3000 and 5000-era desktop processors generally use AM4; Intel 12th-, 13th- and 14th-generation Core processors use LGA1700. A Ryzen CPU cannot be installed on an Intel board, and an AM5 processor cannot be installed on an AM4 board.

- For Guaranteed Compatibility: Before purchase, you MUST confirm the replacement motherboard's part number PERFECTLY matches your original board's part number! If unsure, contact us immediately—we’ll guarantee the precise motherboard match for your laptop model.
- Part Number Verification: For part number mismatches, verify your laptop model, motherboard board number, and compare whether the interfaces are consistent. Note: The part number is typically printed on the motherboard’s back.
- Rigorous Quality Testing: All critical components (ports, connections, functionality) undergo strict testing to ensure reliability and high-performance integration.
- Service Tag Customization: Motherboards ship with an empty default Service Tag. Provide your custom code for configuration. Note: Some boards may not support modification.
- Installation Support: If questions or issues arise during installation, reach out to us immediately. Technical assistance is available for a seamless process.
Check the manufacturer’s CPU-support list and required BIOS version for the exact model. Socket compatibility alone does not guarantee that the board will boot with a newer processor.
2. Match the memory generation
- AM5: DDR5 only.
- AM4: DDR4.
- LGA1700: the exact board version determines whether it uses DDR4 or DDR5.
DDR4 and DDR5 DIMMs are physically and electrically different. A motherboard’s advertised memory overclocking speed is also not a guarantee that every kit will run at that speed; check the board’s memory support list and configure the profile in firmware if necessary.
3. Consider total platform cost
Compare the CPU, motherboard, memory and cooler together. A DDR4 board may be the better purchase when you already own compatible RAM. For a new AMD system, however, AM5 and DDR5 may provide a better long-term value even if the initial platform costs more.
4. Check storage and expansion
Two M.2 slots are useful for a gaming system that may add a second SSD. The MSI B650 Gaming Plus WiFi, MSI B760 Gaming Plus WiFi and ASUS Prime B760M-A AX D4 all provide multiple M.2 positions. Also check rear USB speeds, front USB-C headers, fan headers, audio outputs and the number of PCIe slots.
5. Choose the right form factor
- ATX: more expansion slots and generally more room for storage and headers.
- Micro-ATX: smaller and often cheaper, but with fewer expansion slots.
- Mini-ITX: suitable for very small systems, but usually more expensive and restrictive.
The exact RTX 4060 model determines card length, thickness, power connector and clearance. Check the GPU manufacturer’s dimensions against the case, even if the motherboard itself fits. Also verify CPU-cooler height, M.2 heatsink clearance and front-panel connector placement.
6. Treat wireless networking as a convenience
Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth and 2.5Gb Ethernet are useful features, but they do not make the RTX 4060 faster. Wired Ethernet remains preferable for some competitive gaming and high-speed local transfers. Wi-Fi 6E availability can depend on regional regulations and operating-system support.
7. Do not overspend on VRM features
A Ryzen 5 or Core i5 system does not require flagship-class power delivery. Pay more for a stronger VRM and cooling design when you genuinely intend to run a high-power Core i7/i9 or Ryzen 9, not simply because the PC includes an RTX 4060.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying for the GPU instead of the CPU: select the socket, memory type and features around the processor first.
- Assuming every B760 board supports both memory types: DDR4 and DDR5 support depends on the exact model.
- Buying PCIe 5.0 for its own sake: it is optional for an RTX 4060.
- Connecting the monitor to the motherboard: with an Intel F-series CPU such as the Core i5-12400F, the processor lacks integrated graphics. Connect the monitor to the RTX 4060.
- Ignoring BIOS support: verify the CPU list and BIOS requirement, especially for 14th-generation Intel CPUs, Ryzen 5000 on older AM4 stock, and later AM5 processors.
- Ignoring the exact graphics card dimensions: RTX 4060 models vary in length, thickness and power requirements.
- Paying for X670E or Z790 features that you will not use: the money is usually better spent on the CPU, memory, SSD, power supply or GPU.
- Assuming an old board is automatically suitable: older PCIe generations may work, but CPU age, BIOS support, storage limits and bandwidth should be considered.
Final verdict
For a new AMD system, buy the MSI B650 Gaming Plus WiFi with a mainstream Ryzen AM5 processor and DDR5. For a new Intel DDR5 system, choose the MSI B760 Gaming Plus WiFi. For an affordable Intel build that reuses DDR4 or needs a micro-ATX board, choose the ASUS Prime B760M-A AX D4. If you already own a Ryzen 5000 processor or DDR4 memory, a quality B550 board remains the sensible AM4 choice.
The RTX 4060 itself does not require an expensive motherboard. Prioritize CPU compatibility, memory, case fit, storage, networking and your upgrade plan.
