There is no single best gaming motherboard for every PC. Choose by processor socket first, then pay for the storage, connectivity, and expansion features your build needs. For recommendations anchored to 2025, PC Gamer named the Gigabyte X870 Aorus Elite WiFi7 Ice its best balance of price, features, and performance among the AM5 boards it tested that year. Its updated 2026 guide names different picks, so the list below separates the 2025 awards from current editorial recommendations rather than treating them as one timeless ranking.
Best gaming motherboards: quick picks by platform and budget
These are editorial recommendations, not a claim that a motherboard by itself increases game frame rates. The Intel and AMD choices use different sockets and cannot substitute for one another.

PC Gamer’s 2025 awards also discuss the MSI MAG Z890 Tomahawk WiFi as a value-oriented Intel Z890 option. The article describes three PCIe slots, four M.2 sockets, and Thunderbolt 4. These are publication-attributed feature descriptions, not independent measurements here. Read the 2025 awards coverage.
Which CPU socket and generation do you need?
Start with the exact processor you plan to use. A board must match its socket, and the board’s CPU support list and BIOS version must support that specific processor. MSI’s platform guide distinguishes AMD AM5 for Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 desktop processors from Intel LGA1700 for 12th–14th Gen Core and LGA1851 for Core Ultra 200 series. Check the board maker’s model-specific support page before ordering; platform-family names alone do not confirm CPU or BIOS compatibility. MSI’s platform guide.

AMD’s official AM5 chipset page is useful for comparing AM5 capabilities, but it does not replace the individual motherboard’s CPU list or firmware notes. AMD AM5 chipset specifications.
What AM5 chipset tier makes sense for gaming?
Chipset choice mainly determines platform features and I/O options. AMD lists X870E with USB 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 support for graphics and NVMe; X870 with USB 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 NVMe; and B850 with PCIe 5.0 NVMe and overclocking, while USB 4.0 is optional. Board makers decide how those capabilities appear in a specific product, so verify the board’s own specifications and slot-sharing notes.
Rank #2

| AM5 chipset | AMD-listed capabilities relevant to expansion | Practical reading |
|---|---|---|
| X870E | USB 4.0; PCIe 5.0 for graphics and NVMe; 44 usable PCIe lanes | Offers the broadest listed platform capability here, but the chipset specification does not establish better game performance. |
| X870 | USB 4.0; PCIe 5.0 NVMe; 36 usable PCIe lanes | Consider it when its specific board’s I/O and storage fit your build. |
| B850 | PCIe 5.0 NVMe and overclocking; USB 4.0 optional; 36 usable PCIe lanes | Can suit a gaming build that does not need every premium I/O option. |
The lane figures are AMD platform specifications, not gaming benchmarks. AMD describes B850 as “the foundation for next-generation gaming and content creation experiences”; that is vendor positioning, not an independent performance finding. AMD’s official chipset specifications.
Which motherboard features should you compare?
Compare the actual board, not just the chipset name. Two boards with the same chipset can differ in connectivity, storage layout, and physical fit.

- Optimized Thermal Design: Massive heatsinks with integrated I/O cover, and high-conductivity thermal pad
- M.2 and SATA storage: count the sockets you will use and check their supported PCIe generations. Read the manual for lane sharing: installing a drive in one slot can affect another slot or port on some boards.
- Graphics and expansion slots: confirm the primary GPU slot’s placement and available clearance, then check the electrical configuration of additional PCIe slots if you need capture, sound, or networking cards.
- USB and other I/O: compare rear and front-panel USB against the devices you own. Check whether the board supplies headers for your case’s front ports and any ports or features you specifically require.
- Networking: confirm wired Ethernet and whether Wi-Fi is included. Wi-Fi generation and included antenna details vary by model.
- Form factor: match ATX, micro-ATX, or mini-ITX to the case and check that the case supports the board’s dimensions.
- Build and firmware support: review CPU support, BIOS update method, memory compatibility guidance, and whether the board offers features that make assembly or troubleshooting easier.
For examples of feature differences, PC Gamer describes four M.2 sockets and Wi-Fi 7 on the Gigabyte X870 Aorus Elite WiFi7 Ice, and four M.2 sockets plus Thunderbolt 4 on the MSI MAG Z890 Tomahawk WiFi. Those descriptions are specific to the named models, not guarantees for every X870 or Z890 board. PC Gamer’s 2025 awards coverage.
Will a more expensive motherboard make games run faster?
The reviewed recommendations do not establish a comparable gaming benchmark or frame-rate gain for these motherboards. Do not treat a more expensive chipset, extra PCIe lanes, or a larger feature list as proof of higher FPS. Choose a board that supports your CPU reliably and supplies the I/O and expansion you will use; spend the rest of the budget where it meets a real need in your build.

How to choose and verify a board before you buy
- Identify the processor. Note its exact model, then determine whether it needs AM5, LGA1700, or LGA1851.
- Shortlist compatible boards. Use the motherboard manufacturer’s CPU support list and check the minimum BIOS revision for your processor.
- Map your parts and ports. Confirm case form factor, memory generation, GPU slot, number of drives, front USB headers, networking, and any required expansion card.
- Read sharing and firmware notes. Check the manual for M.2/PCIe/SATA lane sharing and the maker’s BIOS update instructions, particularly if the board may ship with older firmware.
- Compare current local offers. Prices, inventory, board revisions, and included wireless features can vary by region and seller; verify the exact listing and model before checkout.
For additional motherboard testing context, TechSpot maintains a reviews index that includes dated B850 and Z890 roundup entries; the index itself is not a direct comparison of every board listed above. TechSpot motherboard reviews.
