There is no objective all-time multiplayer ranking: a tight two-player co-op adventure, a local party game and a long-running competitive game serve different groups. The strongest picks combine multiplayer design and replay value with a good fit for their intended players, an appropriate learning curve, practical platform and play options, and current availability. Use the choices below as a guide to play style—not as a universal top-ten list—and check player count, online or local support, and crossplay before choosing for a specific group.
How to choose among the best multiplayer games of all time
Start with the kind of evening your group wants. Does everyone want to compete, cooperate against the game, or join a larger online community that persists beyond one session? Then compare games within that category: player count, session length, accessibility, and whether the people playing can use the same platform or crossplay. A game’s current popularity can help indicate staying power, but a concurrent-player chart is not a measure of quality or of everyone who plays it.

- Group size: Check the intended party size, not just a headline maximum. A game designed around three players may feel different with two or four.
- Mode: Distinguish local multiplayer on one device from online play, and check whether a game supports both.
- Platform and crossplay: Confirm the supported platforms and whether players on different systems can join the same session.
- Commitment: Consider whether the group wants short, self-contained sessions or a persistent game that rewards regular play.
- Learning curve and cost: A deep competitive game may be rewarding for regular players but harder to pick up casually; check current pricing and availability for the platform you use.
Best multiplayer games to play with friends: cooperative and competitive choices
Left 4 Dead — co-op with a competitive alternative
Valve’s Steam listing describes Left 4 Dead as a cooperative game with matchmaking, four campaigns and 20 maps. It also offers four-on-four Versus Mode and Survival Mode, so the same game supports both teamwork against the infected and player-versus-player competition. That range makes it a useful choice for groups who want more than one way to play; its listing is evidence of the modes Steam currently describes, not proof of an all-time ranking.
Elden Ring Nightreign — a three-player co-op focus
GamesRadar’s 2025 recommendations describe Elden Ring Nightreign as a three-player co-op roguelike balanced around a three-person squad. That defined party size is central to the fit: it is a more natural candidate for a trio than for a group looking for a flexible large party. The recommendation is a recent example, not evidence that the game has already earned lasting all-time status.

PEAK — communication and rescue as co-op tools
GameSpot’s 2026 co-op feature lists PEAK as released on June 16, 2025, and highlights proximity voice chat and the ability to rescue another player. Those mechanics make communication part of the cooperative challenge rather than a feature merely layered on top. Consider it if the group enjoys coordinating and helping one another through a run.
How multiplayer games support online play
Online multiplayer is not one single feature. Valve’s Steamworks documentation separates matchmaking and lobbies from networking, and describes dedicated servers as a fit for highly competitive games and persistent servers. In practical terms, matchmaking helps players find or assemble a session; the networking layer carries the game state between players; and dedicated servers can host a game independently of an individual player’s device. Those technical choices shape how sessions are organized, but they do not by themselves determine whether a game is fun or well suited to a particular group. Valve says Steam began as a multiplayer platform with Counter-Strike 1.6 and that multiplayer has remained a major focus; that is the platform operator’s account, not an independent assessment of game quality.

What player counts can—and cannot—tell you
Concurrent-player statistics capture how many people are playing at the same time on a particular platform, not total unique players, quality, or activity across every platform. SteamDB’s charts show current, 24-hour peak and all-time peak concurrent counts, and its top-thousand chart updates every five minutes. Because the figures are live and Steam-specific, attach an access date to any snapshot and do not present it as a worldwide player total.
For a different measure, White Milk Games reported July 2026 monthly average concurrent Steam players of about 854,000 for Counter-Strike 2, 548,000 for Dota 2, 418,000 for Palworld and 330,000 for PUBG: Battlegrounds. These are that publisher’s analysis-page figures, not official statistics from the game publishers. The report cautions that Steam does not represent all PC gaming and that its measure excludes console and mobile audiences. The values indicate substantial, sustained Steam activity for that month; they do not settle which games are best.

Why there is no single all-time winner
Editorial recommendations use different criteria and genres. GamesRadar’s 2025 selection discusses Split Fiction and Elden Ring Nightreign; PC Gamer’s July 2026 co-op guide organizes suggestions by player count and affordability; TechRadar’s 2025 PC guide ranges across battle royale, extraction, sports, racing and co-op. Those guides demonstrate the breadth of multiplayer play, not agreement on a canonical list. The fairest comparison is between games trying to solve the same problem for a similar group: a competitive online game should not be judged as though it were a couch party game, and a focused co-op campaign need not compete with a persistent online world on the same terms.
