Until then, the best replacement depends on the kind of matches you want: Battlefield 6 is the closest large-scale military alternative, Halo Infinite delivers compact arena gunplay, THE FINALS adds destruction and unconventional loadouts, and Counter-Strike 2, VALORANT and Rainbow Six Siege cover increasingly tactical forms of round-based play. Apex Legends is the pick for squad battle royale, while Overwatch offers free-to-play 5v5 hero combat.
Activision describes Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer as “grounded, precise combat where fluid movement, player choice, and greater control define every engagement.” The games below cover those same desires from different angles, so you can choose a substitute instead of settling for a shooter that only shares a first-person camera.

Choose your Call of Duty substitute by the match you want
There is no single game that reproduces every part of Call of Duty. The useful question is what you want to preserve while waiting for Modern Warfare 4: military scale, rapid gunfights, a short competitive round, squad play, or the ability to change a fight with a special ability.
Recommended Free Tools
| Game | Battle scale | Pacing and time-to-kill feel | Realism versus abilities | Primary structure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Battlefield 6 | Large military maps and broad frontline battles | Faster engagements inside a more spacious battlefield | Military presentation with equipment-driven variety | Respawn-based large-scale multiplayer |
| Halo Infinite | Tight arena maps | Readable, deliberate gunplay with room for outplays | Science-fiction sandbox rather than military realism | Compact arena matches |
| THE FINALS | Small-to-medium arenas built around objectives | Very fast movement and rapidly changing fights | Stylized combat with unusual loadouts and destruction | Respawn-based objective arenas |
| Counter-Strike 2 | Compact bomb-site maps | Highly lethal, precision-focused rounds | Grounded weapons and no hero abilities | Round-based attack and defense with an economy |
| VALORANT | Compact tactical maps | Lethal rifle fights moderated by ability usage | Weapon fundamentals combined with character abilities | Round-based attack and defense |
| Rainbow Six Siege | Interior-heavy tactical spaces | Slower preparation followed by sudden, high-stakes engagements | Modern tactical setting with operator abilities and gadgets | Round-based clearing, attack and defense |
| Apex Legends | Large battle-royale maps | Longer sessions with explosive squad encounters | Hero abilities layered onto movement-focused gunplay | Squad battle royale |
| Overwatch | Objective arenas | Continuous team fights shaped by cooldowns | Hero abilities are central to every engagement | Free-to-play, team-based 5v5 matches |
Use the table as a starting point, then read the individual sections for the adjustments each game asks you to make. A player who wants “games like Call of Duty” in the broadest sense should start with Battlefield 6 or Halo Infinite. Someone searching for a “tactical shooter instead of Call of Duty” will get a better fit from Counter-Strike 2, VALORANT or Rainbow Six Siege.

Battlefield 6: the closest large-scale military substitute
Why it fits
Battlefield 6 is the most natural choice when the part of Call of Duty you miss is the military setting and the feeling that a match is larger than any one gunfight. Its broader battlefield gives you more room to maneuver, more sightlines to read and more ways to approach an objective than a tight arena shooter. You can move between frontline pressure, defensive positioning and flanking routes instead of fighting through a sequence of compact lanes.
That scale changes the rhythm. A lost duel does not always end your contribution; repositioning, supporting a push and choosing when to cross open ground matter as much as raw reaction speed. The result is still recognizably a military multiplayer shooter, but it asks you to think about the battle around your immediate target.
What feels different from Call of Duty
- More space: engagements can begin at longer ranges and may involve several directions at once.
- Broader objectives: holding or attacking an area often matters more than simply winning the next lane fight.
- Less dependence on a single streak: your value can come from positioning and sustained pressure across the map.
Choose Battlefield 6 if you want a grounded military substitute with a broader battlefield feel. It is less suitable if your ideal session is a series of very short, tightly controlled gunfights.

Why it fits
Halo Infinite is the strongest alternative for players who want to concentrate on aim, movement, weapon choice and map control without the visual language of a modern military shooter. Its arena format keeps the action compact, and the gunplay loop is direct enough that you can understand why a duel was won or lost. Weapons, equipment and routes create decisions, but the core confrontation remains easy to read.
The Microsoft Store’s online multiplayer shooter category lists Halo Infinite, and the most precise product phrase for Xbox shoppers is “Halo Infinite Xbox Series X|S.” Use that wording when checking the current console listing, edition details and installation requirements.
How to adjust from Call of Duty
- Expect map control and equipment timing to matter as much as sprinting into the next engagement.
- Track the weapons and resources your team can reach instead of assuming every fight begins with identical loadouts.
- Treat the arena as a set of routes and power positions; winning a duel is useful, but controlling the next approach is often more important.
Pick Halo Infinite when you want short, repeatable matches and a clean gunplay loop. Pick Battlefield 6 instead when you want the same military framing and a much larger battlefield.

THE FINALS: fast arenas, destruction and unconventional loadouts
Why it fits
THE FINALS is the choice for players who want the speed of an arena shooter but do not want every match to follow familiar military patterns. Its defining combination is fast combat, objective play, environmental destruction and unusual loadouts. A building, wall or defensive position can become part of the problem to solve rather than a permanent piece of cover.
That destruction changes the normal Call of Duty habit of memorizing safe head-glitches and repeating the same route. A strong position may disappear, an objective can become exposed and a team can create a new attack path instead of waiting for the opponent to make a mistake.
What to learn first
- Read the objective: a flashy elimination is not automatically the best play if it leaves the objective undefended.
- Use the environment deliberately: destruction can open a route, deny cover or force opponents into the open.
- Coordinate loadouts: unusual equipment is most effective when teammates use it to create a combined play rather than four unrelated surprises.
The Microsoft Store category lists THE FINALS among its online multiplayer shooters. Start here if your priority is fast, chaotic arena combat with more variables than a conventional military map.
Counter-Strike 2: the purest round-based tactical alternative
Why it fits
Counter-Strike 2 is built around precision, information and consequences. Teams attack or defend bomb sites in discrete rounds, and an elimination can remove a player from the rest of that round. The economy adds another layer: decisions about purchases affect the weapons and utility available in later rounds, so a team must balance the immediate fight against its next opportunity.
This is a very different pace from a respawn playlist. You cannot rely on instantly returning to the same duel, and a good opening position can shape the entire round. Communication, crosshair placement, utility timing and disciplined peeking matter more than constant movement.
Who should choose it
Choose Counter-Strike 2 if you want the most competitive, stripped-back version of tactical shooting. It is a poor substitute for players who mainly want continuous action or frequent loadout experimentation, but it is ideal when the satisfaction comes from winning a carefully prepared engagement.

VALORANT: tactical rounds with character abilities
Why it fits
VALORANT keeps the attack-and-defense structure and lethal weapon fundamentals of a tactical shooter, then adds characters whose abilities shape information, space and timing. A round may still be decided by a precise rifle duel, but abilities can reveal a position, block a route, deny a plant or create a safer entry.
That combination makes VALORANT a useful middle ground. It is more ability-driven than Counter-Strike 2, yet more deliberate and round-focused than a respawn arena game. You need to understand both the weapon fight and the opponent’s available tools.
How it differs from a Call of Duty mindset
- Do not spend every ability immediately; saving one for the retake or final seconds of a round can be more valuable.
- Clear the information problem before committing to a site. Knowing where the defender is changes the value of every weapon duel.
- Expect team composition and ability combinations to influence the plan before the round begins.
VALORANT is the best choice when you want tactical tension but still enjoy distinct character roles and a wider range of planned utility.
Rainbow Six Siege: information-heavy clearing and defense
Why it fits
Rainbow Six Siege slows the match down before making each engagement matter more. Attackers gather information and clear rooms; defenders reinforce, trap, hide and manipulate the building. Sound, camera information, destructible surfaces and operator gadgets can reveal or conceal a route before either team takes a shot.
The result is a tactical shooter where preparation is not downtime. Every piece of information can change the safest entry, and an apparently secure wall or ceiling may not remain secure once the teams begin using the environment.
When it is the right replacement
Choose Siege if the part of Call of Duty you enjoy is planning a breach, reading an opponent and winning a high-stakes defensive setup. It is not the right pick for a player who wants immediate respawns and uninterrupted sprinting. The learning curve is steeper because maps, operators and information tools all matter at once.

- Super fun, easy to learn, hard to master gameplay.
Apex Legends: battle royale for squads and movement
Why it fits
Apex Legends changes the session structure rather than trying to reproduce a traditional multiplayer match. You enter a large map with a squad, gather equipment, rotate as the playable area changes and decide when to take or avoid fights. A successful match can last substantially longer than an arena round, and one bad decision may affect the rest of the squad.

The appeal for Call of Duty players is the combination of responsive shooting, strong movement and squad coordination. The difference is that a battle royale asks you to manage resources and position over a longer arc instead of resetting after every elimination.
How to make the transition
- Prioritize a safe rotation over chasing every distant fight.
- Stay close enough to your squad that a knock can be answered quickly.
- Learn when to disengage. Surviving with useful equipment can be better than trading for one elimination outside the next safe area.
Pick Apex Legends when you want squad play, movement and longer rounds. Pick a compact arena game when you want more immediate repetition and less downtime between attempts.

Why it fits
Blizzard describes Overwatch as “a free-to-play, team-based action game” in which every match is a “5v5 battlefield brawl.” That makes it the clearest option for players who want to start without a paid entry requirement and are comfortable replacing weapon-only combat with hero roles, cooldowns and ultimate abilities.
Overwatch matches revolve around coordinated team fights. Positioning, target selection and ability timing can turn an otherwise losing engagement, while a team that uses its abilities separately may lose even when its individual aim is strong.

- Fast target acquisition and movement still matter, especially for heroes built around direct weapon fire.
- Map awareness remains essential because objectives create predictable pressure points.
- Team coordination is more explicit: protect vulnerable teammates, combine abilities and avoid entering a fight without the resources to finish it.
Choose Overwatch when you want continuous team combat and hero variety rather than military realism. The Microsoft Store category also lists Overwatch among its online multiplayer shooters.

Platform and access checks before you install
Platform support, cross-play rules, edition requirements and regional availability can change. Confirm the current store page for your platform before downloading, particularly if you intend to play with friends on another system.
For Xbox shoppers, the exact query “Halo Infinite Xbox Series X|S” is more useful than a generic search because it targets the current console product listing. Microsoft’s online multiplayer shooter category also lists Halo Infinite, VALORANT, Overwatch, THE FINALS and Destiny 2, while EA’s official shooter library lists Battlefield 6 and Battlefield 2042. Those category pages are useful starting points, but they do not replace checking the individual game’s current platform and account requirements.
Overwatch is explicitly free-to-play. For the other games, verify the current edition, download size, online-service requirements and any mode-specific access rules in the store listing for your region. Avoid assuming that a game’s base download, campaign edition or console generation includes every multiplayer feature.

A practical rotation while waiting for October 23, 2026
For short sessions
Use Halo Infinite or THE FINALS when you have time for a few compact matches. Halo gives you a more readable arena routine; THE FINALS is better when you want each round to be disrupted by destruction and unconventional equipment.
For a focused competitive evening
Choose Counter-Strike 2, VALORANT or Rainbow Six Siege. These games reward committing to a smaller skill goal: crosshair placement and economy in Counter-Strike 2, ability timing in VALORANT, or information and room-clearing discipline in Siege.
For a longer group session
Battlefield 6 supports a broad battlefield rhythm, while Apex Legends turns the evening into a sequence of squad decisions and longer rounds. Overwatch works when your group prefers repeated objective fights and clearly defined hero roles.
For variety rather than direct replacement
Rotate between one game from each structure instead of switching among eight similar arena shooters. A large-scale military game, a tactical round-based game and a hero or battle-royale game exercise different skills, reducing the chance that every session feels like the same substitute with a different interface.
Common mistakes when replacing Call of Duty
- Choosing by genre label alone: “first-person shooter” covers arena, tactical, battle-royale and hero formats that feel radically different.
- Expecting identical pacing: Battlefield 6 gives you more space, while Counter-Strike 2 and Siege make a single life or round far more consequential.
- Ignoring the objective: THE FINALS and Overwatch especially punish players who chase eliminations while abandoning the team’s actual win condition.
- Transferring the same loadout habits everywhere: VALORANT, Siege and Counter-Strike 2 require planning around information, utility or economy rather than simply selecting a favorite weapon.
- Assuming availability: check the current platform listing, cross-play behavior and edition requirements before building a group around a game.
The most reliable path is to identify the feature you miss, play the matching substitute for several sessions and judge it on its own structure. Battlefield 6 is the nearest broad military stand-in; Halo Infinite is the cleanest compact arena option; THE FINALS supplies speed and destruction; Counter-Strike 2, VALORANT and Siege cover different levels of tactical commitment; Apex Legends extends the session into squad battle royale; and Overwatch provides free-to-play 5v5 hero combat. That gives you a distinct multiplayer rotation until Modern Warfare 4’s scheduled worldwide launch on October 23, 2026.
