Coolify is the clearest self-hosted Netlify alternative for a static gaming site in 2026. It offers a dashboard and a reported Static build pack served by Caddy. Dokploy is the more ambitious Docker Swarm option, while Dokku is the mature, single-server, Git-push choice. Cloudflare Pages, Vercel and GitHub Pages may resemble Netlify, but they are managed services and cannot be self-hosted. Treat feature, pricing and licensing details below as reports from comparison pages and verify them against each project’s current documentation before committing a production site.

Which Netlify alternative should you self-host?

For a video-game site, the practical shortlist is small. Coolify, Dokploy and Dokku are the repeatedly named self-hosted options. You install them on a server you control, connect a domain, and operate deployments, updates, backups and security yourself. The other familiar names in this comparison are managed platforms: Cloudflare Pages, Vercel and GitHub Pages run on their providers’ infrastructure and therefore do not satisfy a self-hosting requirement.

Platform Hosting model Interface Static-site position Scaling or maturity note
Coolify Self-hosted PaaS on your server Web dashboard Static build pack reported, served by Caddy Swarm multi-server mode reported as experimental; Docker Compose zero-downtime deploys reported as unsupported
Dokploy Self-hosted, Docker-based Web dashboard Static-site path not confirmed in the sources reviewed Docker Swarm services and built-in CI/CD reported; newer project with fewer community answers
Dokku Self-hosted on one server CLI and Git push Static handling not covered in the sources reviewed No built-in multi-server or horizontal scaling; reported as stable after about 13 years
Cloudflare Pages Managed edge service Provider dashboard and Git integration Static and SSR deployment reported Cannot be self-hosted; free-plan figures reported as unlimited bandwidth and 500 builds per month
Vercel Managed service Provider dashboard and Git integration Strong fit for Next.js and React reported Cannot be self-hosted; free tier reported as 100 GB transfer and personal use only
GitHub Pages Managed static hosting Repository settings and Git Static only Free for public repositories; no serverless or edge functions, form handling or analytics

The table separates a hosting decision from a framework decision. A site can be built with a static generator, a JavaScript framework or a container, but only the first three choices put the hosting machine under your control.

What self-hosting changes for a gaming website

With Netlify, the provider handles the server, TLS certificates, build workers, deployment routing and much of the operational maintenance. Self-hosting moves those responsibilities to you. You need a VPS or home server, a way to reach it from the internet, DNS control, storage for repositories and build artifacts, and a backup plan. The monthly hosting bill is therefore part of the platform choice even when the software itself has no separate charge.

That trade-off can be worthwhile for a games publication, mod portal or community wiki that needs predictable control over deployment rules, private services or where data is stored. It is less attractive when the site is maintained by one person who wants a hands-off publishing workflow. A useful test is to ask who will respond when a certificate expires, a disk fills, an update breaks a build or a game-launch traffic spike exhausts the server.

Typical gaming workloads

  • Static editorial site: reviews, guides, release calendars and patch-note pages generated into HTML and assets.
  • Interactive front end: a static shell that calls an API for leaderboards, comments, search or user accounts.
  • Mixed stack: the public site plus databases, queues, image processing or private administration tools.
  • Event traffic: a launch-day or tournament schedule that can produce a short, sharp increase in requests.

A static build system can simplify the first case, but it does not automatically provide a database, authentication, analytics or server-side game logic. Plan those components separately.

Coolify: the strongest starting point for self-hosted static sites

Coolify is described in comparison coverage as a self-hosted PaaS with a web dashboard. Its reported build-pack choices are Nixpacks (the default), Dockerfile, Docker Compose and Static. The Static option is reported to build a site and serve it with Caddy, which makes Coolify the most directly documented static-site route among the three self-hosted candidates in this comparison.

Why a gaming publisher might choose it

  • Dashboard workflow: editors or developers who prefer a visual control panel can manage projects without making every deployment a shell session.
  • Several packaging paths: a conventional static build can use the Static pack, while a custom runtime can move to a Dockerfile or Compose definition.
  • Room for mixed services: the same PaaS model can accommodate a front end alongside supporting containers, subject to the server’s capacity and the platform’s limits.

The Static build pack is a reported capability, not a guarantee for every generator or repository layout. Confirm the current build commands, output-directory settings and domain/TLS flow in Coolify’s own documentation before migrating. Do not assume that a framework-specific preset has the same defaults as Netlify.

Capacity and deployment caveats

One comparison page attributes a suggested mixed-workload size to Coolify documentation: 8 GB of RAM, 4 CPU cores and 150 GB of storage. The page does not state a year or workload benchmark. Treat those figures as a starting reference for a machine hosting static sites plus other services, not as a promise of traffic capacity. A site serving only prebuilt files may need less; databases, image transformations, preview environments and concurrent builds may need more.

The same coverage reports that Coolify’s Swarm multi-server mode is experimental and that Docker Compose zero-downtime deployments are not supported. Those qualifications matter if you plan a cluster or need uninterrupted updates. For a single gaming site, begin with one server and a rollback procedure rather than assuming multi-node behavior is production-ready.

  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

Coolify setup checklist

  1. Provision a supported VPS or home server with enough memory, CPU and storage for the application and its build artifacts. Keep operating-system updates and firewall rules under your control.
  2. Install Coolify using its current official installation method, then immediately set an administrator account and restrict dashboard access.
  3. Point a test subdomain at the server and verify DNS before moving the public domain. This keeps a failed first deployment from taking down the existing site.
  4. Create a project and connect the repository. Select the Static build pack only after confirming the generator’s build command and published output directory.
  5. Run a preview deployment. Check navigation, images, feeds, redirects, canonical URLs and any client-side routes that need fallback handling.
  6. Enable HTTPS and establish backups for source data, configuration and any attached databases. A copied build directory alone is not a complete backup.
  7. Promote the tested deployment to the production domain, monitor logs and retain the previous working version so you can roll back quickly.

Dokploy: a Docker Swarm-oriented alternative

Dokploy is described as a newer, Docker-based self-hosted platform. Comparison pages report that it runs applications as Docker Swarm services and includes built-in CI/CD. Reported build systems include Nixpacks, Dockerfile, Buildpacks and Paketo. That range can suit a gaming team that wants container-level control while still offering a dashboard to the people who deploy projects.

What is clear and what is not

The sources reviewed do not confirm a dedicated static-site workflow for Dokploy. You may be able to serve generated files from a container, but the exact settings, routing behavior and recommended image are not established here. Verify how Dokploy handles a repository that produces only HTML, CSS, JavaScript and media before selecting it for a static publication.

Documentation depth is another consideration. Dokploy is reported as newer, with fewer community answers than Dokku. That does not make it unsuitable; it means troubleshooting may require reading the project’s current documentation or inspecting container and Swarm logs rather than relying on years of forum history.

When Dokploy fits

  • You already package services as Docker images or Compose-style applications.
  • You expect to run several services and want a Swarm-based scheduling model.
  • Your team values a dashboard and integrated CI/CD but accepts a younger ecosystem.

Before production use, test a complete cycle: commit, build, deploy, health check, domain routing, rollback and server restart. A platform that can start a container is not necessarily configured for static asset caching, single-page-app fallback routes or atomic releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Licensing needs verification

Comparison sources disagree about Dokploy’s licence. One description characterizes an Apache 2.0 core with source-available paid features; another describes the self-hosted offering as source-available. Because those statements conflict and licence terms can change, read the current repository and product terms for the exact edition you intend to run. Record what is permitted for a commercial games site before deployment.

Dokku: the simple, mature single-server path

Dokku is presented as a CLI-only, Git-push platform often compared with a miniature Heroku. It is reported as stable after about 13 years and well documented. The trade-off is scope: Dokku is designed around one server and does not provide built-in multi-server or horizontal scaling.

Why the workflow appeals to small teams

A Git push can be an efficient publishing trigger for a static guide site. Developers who are comfortable in a terminal may prefer fewer dashboard abstractions and a deployment model that is easy to script. The long reported track record also makes Dokku attractive when predictability and existing community knowledge matter more than a visual interface.

Static-site handling is not covered by the sources reviewed, so verify how your generator’s build output is served. Confirm the required buildpack or container arrangement, HTTPS setup, redirects and cache headers before changing DNS. Do not infer that a successful application deployment automatically serves a repository’s generated files correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operational boundaries

  • One-server design: a hardware, storage or network failure affects every application on that host.
  • No built-in horizontal scaling: growth may require a different architecture or external load-balancing work.
  • CLI-first administration: access control, deployment hooks and recovery procedures should be documented for anyone who may cover an outage.

Dokku is a strong candidate for a focused, low-complexity publication. It is a weaker fit if you already know that you need multiple nodes, a team-wide visual workflow or independent scaling for several services.

Why Cloudflare Pages, Vercel and GitHub Pages are not self-hosted alternatives

Cloudflare Pages

Cloudflare Pages is described as a managed edge service for static sites and server-rendered applications, with Edge Functions for dynamic logic. It reportedly offers a free plan with unlimited bandwidth and 500 builds per month. Other coverage gives conflicting paid pricing figures—$5 per month for a Workers Paid plan versus $20 per month for a Pro annual plan—so do not use either number as a current budget without checking the provider’s pricing page and the exact product combination.

Its edge delivery may be convenient for a global game-news audience, but the infrastructure remains the provider’s. You cannot install Pages on your own VPS and call it self-hosting. Choose it only when managed hosting is acceptable.

Vercel

Vercel is reported as a strong fit for Next.js and React projects with a robust CI/CD pipeline. The free tier is reported as limited to 100 GB of transfer and personal use. Those limits and terms should be verified against the current plan because the figures are not tied to a dated official page here. Like Pages, Vercel is managed and cannot be self-hosted.

GitHub Pages

GitHub Pages is described as free for public repositories and purely static. The sources reviewed say it does not provide serverless or edge functions, form handling or analytics. It can publish a simple public game guide or documentation site, but those constraints make it unsuitable when the application needs server-side behavior. It is also managed hosting, not a self-owned server.

How to choose among the self-hosted options

Use the following sequence instead of choosing by brand familiarity.

  1. Confirm the hosting requirement. If you cannot maintain a server, select a managed service and stop comparing self-hosted PaaS products. If ownership of the machine is mandatory, keep Coolify, Dokploy and Dokku.
  2. Classify the workload. For a generated static site, Coolify has the clearest reported path. For containerized services and a Swarm-oriented model, investigate Dokploy. For one server and Git-driven deployments, investigate Dokku.
  3. Choose the operator interface. Coolify and Dokploy are reported as dashboard-driven; Dokku is CLI and Git push. Match the tool to the people who will handle releases and incidents, not only to the initial installer.
  4. Set a scaling boundary. Dokku’s single-server model is explicit. Coolify’s multi-server Swarm mode is reported as experimental. Dokploy’s Swarm model may be attractive, but validate node failure and rollback behavior yourself.
  5. Verify unknowns in primary documentation. Static support for Dokploy and Dokku, Dokploy’s licence, current plan limits and exact installation requirements all need confirmation before a contract or migration.
Priority Most plausible first investigation Reason
Static build with a dashboard Coolify Static build pack and Caddy serving are the clearest reported path
Container and Swarm workflow Dokploy Docker services, reported Swarm execution and built-in CI/CD
Minimal, Git-push single server Dokku CLI-first model and long reported track record
No server maintenance Managed platform Cloudflare Pages, Vercel or GitHub Pages remove server operations but are not self-hostable

Server planning, costs and responsibilities

None of the self-hosted choices eliminates infrastructure spending. Budget for the server, storage growth, backups, domain and DNS services, monitoring and the time required for updates and incident response. The reported Coolify reference of 8 GB RAM, 4 cores and 150 GB storage is the only concrete sizing figure in the available material, and it is attributed to a comparison page rather than a verified, dated vendor benchmark. Use it as a conversation starter, not a guaranteed minimum.

Capacity questions to answer before launch

  • How large are source repositories, media files, Docker images and build caches?
  • Will previews or pull-request builds run at the same time as production builds?
  • Does the server also host a database, search index, comments system or image processor?
  • How much traffic arrives during a major game release, showcase or tournament?
  • Can you restore the site on a fresh machine if the original disk fails?

For a static site, bandwidth and build concurrency may matter more than raw application CPU. For a mixed stack, memory pressure and disk I/O can become the limiting factors. Measure your own build times and resource use after a staging deployment rather than treating a generic specification as a promise.

Migration plan from Netlify

  1. Inventory the current site: record the generator, build command, publish directory, environment variables, redirects, headers, forms, functions and scheduled jobs.
  2. Separate static and dynamic pieces: identify which features can remain generated files and which require an API, database or other service on the new server.
  3. Reproduce the build: use a staging project and compare generated file lists, asset paths, client-side routing and image behavior.
  4. Recreate domains and TLS: test with a temporary hostname, then lower DNS time-to-live before the cutover so a rollback propagates faster.
  5. Test failure paths: stop the application, restart the server, deploy a deliberately bad build and restore a backup. Document the exact recovery action.
  6. Cut over and monitor: switch DNS only after the staging checks pass, retain the old deployment until traffic and error rates are normal, and keep a rollback record.

Features supplied by Netlify—such as forms, functions or provider-managed previews—must be replaced deliberately. A static build copied to a new server does not reproduce those services automatically.

Common failure modes and practical responses

The build succeeds but the page is blank

Check that the configured publish directory contains the generated index file and that asset URLs match the production path. Compare the staging output with the files served over HTTPS; do not assume the repository root is the publish directory.

Direct links to guide pages return an error

Single-page applications often need a fallback rule for client-side routes. Verify the serving configuration in the selected platform and test a deep URL in a fresh browser session.

Deployments consume all disk space

Inspect build caches, old images, preview artifacts and logs. Set retention rules, monitor free space and keep backups on separate storage so cleanup cannot erase the only recovery copy.

A server update causes downtime

Schedule maintenance, keep a tested previous release and rehearse restoration. Coolify’s reported lack of Docker Compose zero-downtime deployments means you should not assume an update will be seamless in that mode.

You need more nodes than the platform comfortably supports

Reassess the architecture before adding complexity. Coolify’s reported Swarm mode is experimental, Dokku has no built-in horizontal scaling, and Dokploy’s behavior should be validated with node-failure tests. A managed edge service may be the more honest choice if operational capacity is limited.

Bottom line for 2026

Start with Coolify when your priority is a self-hosted dashboard and a clearly reported static-site route. Investigate Dokploy when Docker and Swarm-style service management outweigh ecosystem maturity, and choose Dokku when a single server, Git push and CLI operation are exactly what you want. Keep Cloudflare Pages, Vercel and GitHub Pages in a separate managed-hosting category: they may be excellent Netlify substitutes, but they cannot be installed on infrastructure you control.

Before committing, verify current documentation for static deployment in Dokploy and Dokku, confirm Dokploy’s licence for your use, check current managed-plan limits, and size the server for your actual build and traffic pattern. Those checks determine whether the convenience of Netlify is worth replacing with the control—and responsibility—of self-hosting.
