For most teams, managed Nextcloud hosting is the practical choice in 2026: the provider operates the server, applies updates and usually handles backups. Storage Share from Hetzner and the tiered plans from Cloudbasedbackup stand out on reported price, while Stellarhosted targets organizations that need a higher-touch EU service. If you want the lowest infrastructure bill and can administer Linux, a self-managed VPS can cost less, but you become responsible for every update, backup and GDPR control.
The prices and limits below are reported figures rather than live quotations. Confirm the current plan, data-center region, backup policy, Data Processing Agreement (DPA) and app restrictions with each provider before committing.

The short answer
Choose between two fundamentally different products:
- Managed Nextcloud: a host runs the operating system and Nextcloud maintenance. You receive a ready-to-use instance, with less administration and usually a defined backup and support arrangement.
- Self-managed VPS: you rent a virtual server and install and operate Nextcloud yourself. The infrastructure price can be very low, but patching, monitoring, backups, restores, security hardening and GDPR documentation are your responsibility.
Among the managed options listed in available provider material, the reported entry price ranges from a few euros per month for modest storage to several hundred euros for customized business service. Do not rank plans by price alone: storage and user caps, data location, backup retention, update timing, certification scope and permission to install custom apps determine whether a plan is suitable.

Provider-by-provider analysis
Hetzner Storage Share: the reported low-cost managed choice
Storage Share is repeatedly listed as a managed Nextcloud option hosted in Falkenstein, Germany. The reported package combines automatic updates with daily backups and month-to-month billing without a minimum contract. That combination is attractive for a small organization that wants predictable administration without a long commitment.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The trade-off is release timing and customization. Roundups describe the service as running one major version behind the latest Nextcloud release and allowing only limited custom plugins. A delayed major release can improve compatibility and reduce surprise changes, but it may postpone new features and require you to check app compatibility before migrating. If your workflow depends on a particular third-party app, obtain written confirmation that it is supported.
Hetzner appears on a community list of Nextcloud hosters. That listing should not be interpreted as proof of official Nextcloud partner status; partner status is a separate question discussed below.

- Up to 522/565 MB/s sequential read/write throughput supports stable data transfers.
- Dual 2.5GbE ports provide fast network transfer speeds and increased redundancy.
- Leverage built-in file and photo management, data protection, virtualization, and surveillance solutions.
- Backed by Synology's 3-year limited hardware warranty.
Cloudbasedbackup: clear storage and user tiers
Cloudbasedbackup is the easiest option in the shortlist to compare by capacity and user count because three tiers state both. The smallest allowance is aimed at a small group, the middle tier increases both storage and permitted users, and the largest listed tier provides substantially more storage while retaining the same reported user ceiling as the middle plan.
Data is reported to remain in German data centers, which may simplify an EU data-residency requirement. That location alone does not make a deployment compliant. The provider explicitly notes that compliance also depends on the customer’s processes, such as access management, retention, incident handling and documented processor instructions. Ask for the DPA, sub-processor list and backup-retention terms before treating the service as suitable for regulated data.
Stellarhosted: higher-touch European service
Stellarhosted markets EU hosting with updates, monitoring and backups included. It advertises ISO 27001 and GDPR compliance and offers a Standard tier for a small user group, a more expensive Premium tier and custom deployments. The large price jump from the entry tier suggests a service aimed at organizations that value managed operations or bespoke support more than the lowest monthly bill.
Request the certificate number and scope before relying on the ISO 27001 claim. A certificate may cover a company or a specific information-security process rather than the exact Nextcloud service, data center or support operation you will use. Likewise, ask which European facility will hold your files and whether support staff or sub-processors can access them.

LibreCloud: inexpensive personal allowance, unverified location
LibreCloud lists Personal, Business and Enterprise tiers. The reported Personal allowance combines five users with 1 TB, making it easy to estimate for a household, club or very small team. The service advertises GDPR and HIPAA compliance.
The available material does not verify data-center locations. If residency in the European Union or a particular country is mandatory, do not infer it from a compliance label. Confirm the physical region, replication locations, DPA terms, breach-notification process and whether the HIPAA claim applies to the exact plan rather than only to an enterprise arrangement.

Cloudamo is reported from a low monthly price for 100 GB and with facilities in the United States, Canada, the European Union and Singapore. That geographic spread can be useful when latency or residency differs among team members, but it also makes plan selection critical: a US or Singapore region has a different transfer and contractual profile from an EU region.
The price and location details come from a roundup rather than a retrieved primary pricing page. Treat them as a lead for verification, not as a quote. Before signing up, identify the exact region for primary storage, replicas and backups, then obtain the DPA and sub-processor list for that region.

Stackhero: trial-first evaluation
Stackhero is reported to offer a free trial, European or US server locations and ISO 27001 and GDPR claims. A trial can be valuable for checking file synchronization, sharing links, mobile clients, app compatibility and administrator controls before migration.
Because the available claims and location details are roundup-only, establish the commercial terms and technical boundaries during the trial. Ask how long trial data is retained, whether support is included, what backup schedule applies after conversion and whether you can export a complete instance if you leave.
IONOS: custom quotation and unconfirmed partner language
IONOS publishes a Nextcloud hosting guide and appears in provider roundups, but the managed service is described as quote-based rather than with a public plan price. That model may fit an organization needing a negotiated storage, support or compliance package, while making an apples-to-apples price comparison difficult.
One roundup calls IONOS an official Nextcloud Platinum Partner. The available evidence does not confirm that description. Do not place “official” or “partner” in procurement documents until the status appears on Nextcloud’s current partner directory and the provider confirms which legal entity and service it covers.

Self-managed VPS: the cheapest route only if you can operate it
A self-managed VPS separates infrastructure rental from application operations. A Contabo blog reports that a team of 10–15 can run Nextcloud on its Cloud VPS 4 at €4.50 per month. Hetzner VPS plans are also commonly used for this model. These figures describe server rental, not a managed Nextcloud service.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You must install and configure Nextcloud, web and database components, storage, TLS, user authentication and any required apps. You also own the update calendar, vulnerability response, monitoring, backup design, restore testing, log retention and GDPR records. A low VPS bill can therefore become more expensive than managed hosting once staff time, secondary backup storage and incident response are included.
When a VPS makes sense
- You have someone who can administer Linux, databases and web security.
- You need custom apps, background jobs or configuration that managed plans restrict.
- You require a specific EU data center and can document where primary data and backups reside.
- You are prepared to test restores rather than assuming that a backup file is usable.
When managed hosting is safer
- No one has a defined on-call role for security updates and outages.
- Your team needs a written backup and support commitment.
- You must produce processor and sub-processor documentation quickly.
- The cost of downtime or an incorrect restore is higher than the monthly hosting premium.
GDPR and data-location checks
Nextcloud provides controls such as access permissions, audit logs and data-export tools, but software features do not by themselves establish GDPR compliance. The result depends on configuration, organizational processes, contracts and the behavior of administrators and users. A self-hosted instance on an EU-based server can be operated in a GDPR-compliant way when those elements are handled correctly.
Documents to request before purchase
- Data Processing Agreement: confirm the provider’s role, instructions, confidentiality duties, security measures, breach notification and deletion or return of data.
- Sub-processor list: identify cloud, backup, support and monitoring companies that may handle your data, including their countries.
- Exact data-center location: ask where primary files, database records, replicas and backups are stored. “EU hosting” is too broad if your policy requires a named country.
- Certification scope: if ISO 27001 is advertised, verify that the certificate covers the service, facility and legal entity you are buying from.
- Exit and deletion procedure: establish how to export files, shares, users and audit records, and how remaining copies are deleted after cancellation.
Operational controls you still need
- Use least-privilege administrator accounts and strong authentication.
- Define retention and deletion rules for shared folders and inactive accounts.
- Review audit logs and access rights on a schedule appropriate to the data.
- Test a restore and record who approves recovery.
- Document incident contacts, escalation times and user off-boarding.
What “official Nextcloud partner” means here
No provider in the shortlist is confirmed as an official Nextcloud partner by the available evidence. A community discussion written by a commenter who said their knowledge was about six years old mentioned TheGood.Cloud and Tab.Digital as hosts considered partners at that time, while listing Hetzner separately in a hoster directory. That historical comment is not a current certification.
Use Nextcloud’s current partner directory, https://nextcloud.com/partners, as the authority. Verify the exact provider name, legal entity and service scope on that page before using “partner,” “official” or “Platinum Partner” in a purchasing decision.
How to choose a provider step by step
- Set the operating model. Decide whether your team will administer a VPS. If there is no named owner for updates, backups and incidents, start with managed hosting.
- Calculate real capacity. Count active users, shared folders, current data, annual growth and temporary upload space. Compare both storage and user ceilings; a large disk allowance is not useful if the plan limits your people.
- Fix the residency requirement. Select the country or region first, then verify primary, replica and backup locations. Do not assume that a provider’s headquarters is where your files are stored.
- List required apps and integrations. Ask whether custom plugins are permitted, whether administrators can install updates, and which major Nextcloud release the host runs. This is especially important when a service intentionally trails the newest release.
- Validate legal and security evidence. Obtain the DPA, sub-processors, incident terms and certification scope. Marketing claims without these documents should not be treated as contractual protection.
- Test before migration. Use a trial or small pilot to check desktop and mobile synchronization, sharing, external links, group permissions, search, notifications and administrative reporting.
- Confirm recovery. Ask how often backups run, how long they are retained, where they are stored, whether restores are included and how quickly support can initiate one.
- Price the complete service. Add user overages, extra storage, backup retention, support, migration assistance and any separate VPS backup or monitoring costs. For a VPS, include staff time and a second location for backups.
Migration and first-month checklist
- Inventory users, groups, shared folders, external shares, calendars, contacts and installed apps.
- Export or document settings that are not included in a basic file export, including retention rules and authentication integrations.
- Create a pilot with representative files and at least one administrator and one ordinary user.
- Verify permissions and sharing links after transfer; do not assume that folder ownership maps automatically between hosts.
- Run synchronization tests on every supported desktop and mobile platform used by the team.
- Schedule the final cutover during a quiet period, freeze writes on the old instance and retain a read-only copy until acceptance is complete.
- After cutover, review audit events, failed logins, storage growth and backup reports.
- Record the provider’s support contacts, renewal terms, export method and cancellation deadline in your operational documentation.
Common pitfalls and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| A required app cannot be installed | Managed plan restricts custom plugins or runs a different major release | Ask for an approved-app list and supported release; move to a plan with customization or a VPS if the app is essential |
| Data-residency review fails | Only the primary site was documented; replicas or backups are elsewhere | Request a complete location map and contractual commitment for every copy |
| Backups exist but recovery is slow | Retention, restore time or restore responsibility was never defined | Get recovery objectives in writing and perform a test restore before production use |
| Compliance claim cannot be substantiated | Marketing language is not tied to a DPA or certificate scope | Request the legal documents and certificate details; treat unsupported claims as unverified |
| VPS costs rise after launch | Administration, monitoring, secondary backups and incident work were omitted from the budget | Track staff hours and recurring services; compare the total with a managed plan |
| Users hit a limit unexpectedly | Storage and user allowances were compared separately | Model peak users and growth together, including guest or external accounts if the provider counts them |
Verdict
For a small EU-focused team that wants managed operations and a simple monthly commitment, the reported Storage Share offer is the clearest low-cost starting point, provided its release lag and plugin limits fit your apps. Cloudbasedbackup is easier to size when you know both storage and user counts. Stellarhosted is worth a quotation when monitoring, support and documented controls justify a higher spend. LibreCloud, Cloudamo and Stackhero require extra verification of location, pricing and compliance scope. IONOS is a quote-based option, not a transparent price comparison.
Choose a self-managed VPS only when you can provide the operational discipline that a managed provider would otherwise supply. Whichever route you take, make the decision on documented data location, backup and restore terms, update policy, user/storage limits and contractual GDPR evidence—not on a headline price or an unverified partner label.
