Mario Kart 7 is the best all-around starting point for most Nintendo 3DS racing fans, thanks to its varied courses, customizable karts, and mix of local and online multiplayer features. If you want a more traditional arcade racer with drift-focused handling, choose Ridge Racer 3D. Asphalt 3D is another option for licensed cars, bikes, and street-racing challenges, though its feature list alone does not establish it as a stronger game.
How these 3DS racing games differ
| Game | Racing style | Standout features | Multiplayer | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mario Kart 7 | Kart racing with items | Customizable kart frame, tires, and glider; land, sea, and air sections; new and retro tracks | Nintendo describes local and worldwide online play, plus play for up to eight players using one Game Card under stated requirements; current online service operation is unverified | Players who want variety, accessible competition, and multiplayer options |
| Ridge Racer 3D | Arcade car racing | Drift-focused handling, courses across three locales, stereoscopic 3D presentation, and StreetPass ghost sharing | Local play only; a contemporary review noted that online multiplayer is absent | Players who prefer arcade driving and drifting |
| Asphalt 3D | Street racing | Licensed cars and bikes, police-roadblock and drift themes, and varied challenges | Current multiplayer or service details are not established by the consulted publisher page | Players curious about licensed vehicles and street-racing challenges |
Why Mario Kart 7 is the best all-around pick
Mario Kart 7 makes the strongest broad recommendation because its courses and kart setup give races more variety than a single surface or driving style. Nintendo describes racing across land, sea, and air, with customizable karts and both familiar and new items. Nintendo Life’s 2011 review counts 16 new tracks and 16 retro tracks.

Courses that change how you race
Underwater driving and gliding are more than visual diversions: they give sections of a course a different feel and reward adapting to the route. Nintendo Life’s review also notes that kart parts can be selected to suit different terrain, making customization relevant to how a player approaches a race rather than merely cosmetic. Nintendo’s Mario Kart 7 page describes the game’s land, sea, and air racing and customizable machines; Nintendo Life’s review covers the track selection and handling additions.
Multiplayer options, with an important caveat
Nintendo describes local and worldwide online play, as well as a mode for up to eight players using one Game Card under the stated requirements. Those are the features Nintendo documents, not confirmation that online matchmaking still operates today. Check current service status before choosing the game specifically for online play. Nintendo’s product page lists the multiplayer features.
#1 Best Overall
- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
Ridge Racer 3D: the arcade alternative
Looking for a 3DS racer beyond Mario Kart? Ridge Racer 3D is the clearer alternative if you want arcade car racing built around drifting rather than item-based kart competition. Nintendo describes courses spanning three locales, and the game supports stereoscopic 3D presentation on compatible 3DS hardware. Nintendo’s Ridge Racer 3D page lists its arcade and drift-focused features.
Know the multiplayer trade-off
Nintendo lists local play only, along with StreetPass ghost sharing; StreetPass ghost sharing is not the same as competing in an online race. A contemporary Nintendo Life review criticized the lack of online multiplayer and rated the game 7/10. That review is useful context for the trade-off, rather than evidence that the game suits every arcade-racing fan. Nintendo Life’s review discusses the omission.

- USA NTSC version game with World Edition packaging as pictured
- Plays on all USA version (NTSC) 3DS Consoles
- Players can compete in local wireless matches or online over a broadband Internet connection.
- Players can show their own style by customizing their vehicles with accessories that give them a competitive advantage. For instance, giant tires help a kart drive off-road, while smaller tires work best on city courses.
- People can choose to race as one of their favorite Mushroom Kingdom characters or even as their Mii character.
Asphalt 3D: a qualified pick for licensed vehicles
Asphalt 3D offers a different hook: Nintendo UK lists 42 licensed vehicles across cars and bikes, alongside several challenge types, including police-roadblock and drift themes. The number describes the vehicles in the publisher’s product listing; it is not a measure of game quality. The listed variety may appeal if licensed machines and street-racing challenges are what you want, but the available details do not support ranking it above Mario Kart 7 or Ridge Racer 3D. Nintendo UK’s Asphalt 3D page provides the vehicle count and feature information.
Does the 3D effect work on every system?
No. Nintendo says supported Nintendo 3DS systems display the stereoscopic effect on the system itself, while 2DS models show visuals in 2D. The games remain 3DS titles, but the 3D presentation depends on the hardware you use. Nintendo’s 3DS and 2DS support page explains the system distinction.

- New courses take players on wild rides over a mountain road, on city streets and through a dusty desert
- Players can show their own style by customizing their vehicles with accessories
- People can choose to race as one of their favourite Mushroom Kingdom characters or even as their Mi character
- The game supports both SpotPas and StreetPas features.
- Players can compete in local wireless matches or online over a broadband Internet connection
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Mario Kart 7 for the broadest mix of course types, customization, and multiplayer features.
- Choose Ridge Racer 3D if arcade driving and drifting matter more to you than kart items, and local play is enough.
- Consider Asphalt 3D if licensed cars and bikes and street-racing challenges are your main draw; the documented features do not establish a comparative quality ranking.
