The best first Switch 2 accessories are a properly sized carrying case and screen protector. Add a microSD Express card if you buy digital games, then choose a controller based on how you play: the Switch 2 Pro Controller for docked and long-session gaming, or the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip for a cheaper conventional gamepad. Existing Switch owners should not assume their old accessories fit: original Joy-Con cannot attach to Switch 2, ordinary microSD cards cannot store Switch 2 games, and the original dock is incompatible.

- Protect the console: Buy a Switch 2-specific case and screen protector. The larger console needs a case designed for Switch 2, not merely one labeled for the original Switch.
- Choose storage only if you need it: Digital-game-heavy owners should buy a microSD Express card. Cartridge-focused players can wait.
- Choose a controller for your setup: Buy the Pro Controller for docked play; buy the Charging Grip if you already own Joy-Con 2 and want a more conventional shape at lower cost.
- Add charging equipment only when your household needs it: A Charging Grip or multi-controller dock matters most when detached Joy-Con 2 or several controllers are used regularly.
A practical minimum kit is therefore case + screen protector. Add microSD Express for digital libraries and a Pro Controller or Charging Grip for players who dislike the standard Joy-Con 2 arrangement.

Best Switch 2 controllers
Best overall: Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller
The Switch 2 Pro Controller is the most complete option for docked play. It adds a dedicated C button for GameChat, customizable GL/GR rear buttons, and a headset audio jack. Nintendo lists approximately three hours for a full charge, and the controller can charge from the Switch 2 dock or directly from the Switch 2 AC adapter with its included cable. Buy it if: you play mostly on a television, spend long periods with action or competitive games, use GameChat, or want rear-button customization and wired headset support.
Skip it if: you mostly play handheld or already own an original Switch Pro Controller and do not need those new features. The Switch 2 Pro Controller is designed for Switch 2 and cannot be used with the original Switch.

Best value: Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip
The passive Joy-Con 2 Grip included with the system holds the controllers but does not charge them. The separately sold Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip creates a similar single-controller shape while charging the Joy-Con 2 attached to it.
It is the sensible middle option for someone who already owns Joy-Con 2 but wants more comfortable conventional-controller handling without buying a Pro Controller. It is also useful for households with a second Joy-Con 2 pair. It is less compelling for handheld-only players, existing Pro Controller owners, and anyone who specifically wants rear buttons or a headphone jack.
Check the product name carefully. The original Joy-Con Grip and original Joy-Con Charging Grip do not accept Joy-Con 2. Nintendo confirms this distinction in its accessory compatibility guidance.

Best for existing Switch owners: the original Switch Pro Controller
An original Switch Pro Controller remains usable wirelessly with Switch 2 and can be charged through the Switch 2 dock via USB. It is a good keep-and-use accessory rather than an automatic replacement purchase.

It does not provide the Switch 2 Pro Controller’s C button, GL/GR buttons, or audio jack. If those features are unimportant, buying a new controller may offer little practical benefit.
Best for multiplayer: an additional Joy-Con 2 pair
Buy another Joy-Con 2 set for local multiplayer, motion-control games, mouse-control games, replacement controllers, or a shared family console. A set includes left and right controllers and two straps, and is intended for Switch 2 only; see the Nintendo product listing.
More controllers do not guarantee that every game supports more players. Check the individual game’s player count, controller requirements, online requirements, and whether extra systems or copies are needed.
Third-party wireless controllers
Licensed controllers can offer lower prices, different shapes, or additional back buttons. Prefer products that explicitly list Nintendo Switch 2, state whether GameChat controls and audio are supported, and provide a warranty and return policy. “Switch compatible” alone may refer only to the original console.

Best compact case: PowerA Protection Case

It suits commuters carrying the console, Joy-Con 2, games, and small cables. It is a poor fit for a console wearing a bulky grip or for anyone carrying the dock and AC adapter.
Best premium travel case: Nintendo Switch 2 All-in-One Carrying Case
An all-in-one case is appropriate when the console travels with its dock, AC adapter, cables, extra controllers, or other accessories. The trade-off is weight and bulk. TechRadar reported a US list price of $84.99 for Nintendo’s official All-in-One Carrying Case in its review coverage; verify the live price and stock before buying through the review and current retailer listings.
How to choose a grip-compatible case
First choose the grip, then choose the case. A case that fits the bare console may not fit with a handheld grip attached. Confirm all of the following:
- Whether it fits the bare console or a specific grip-equipped configuration.
- Whether the console can still enter the official dock without removing the grip.
- Whether the Joy-Con 2 can detach while the case or shell remains installed.
- Whether the USB-C port, vents, buttons, and analog sticks have adequate clearance.
- Whether it supports tabletop mode and fits any charging stand you plan to use.
Rigid outer protection, soft lining, a padded screen flap, secure stick clearance, and dedicated microSD Express storage matter more than a large number of pockets.
microSD Express: the storage purchase that changed
Switch 2 requires microSD Express for storing and loading Switch 2 digital games and save data. A conventional microSD or microSDXC card from the original Switch may physically fit, but it cannot be used for that purpose. Nintendo says ordinary cards can still be used to view screenshots and videos captured on an original Switch.
Look for the visible “EX” or “Express” marking and buy from a reputable retailer with a return policy. Nintendo documents support for capacities up to 2TB, and the first use of a card requires an internet-connected system update. See the official microSD Express guidance.

These are buying guidelines, not Nintendo requirements. Game sizes, downloadable expansions, and free internal storage vary. Cartridge-focused players with few digital purchases may not need a card immediately.
Charging accessories that matter
Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip or multi-controller dock
Joy-Con 2 charge while attached to the Switch 2 console or through the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip. A multi-controller charging dock is useful when several detached Joy-Con 2 or Pro Controllers must be ready at once. Verify that a dock explicitly supports Joy-Con 2 rather than the original Joy-Con rail design.
Spare AC adapter and USB-C cables
A spare official or properly specified charger is useful for travel or a second room. The original Switch AC adapter can charge Switch 2 directly, but it cannot provide the power needed for Switch 2 TV mode through the Switch 2 dock. The Switch 2 dock must be used for TV output.
The dock’s USB ports require the dock to be connected to power for charging accessories. For third-party chargers, check USB-C Power Delivery support, cable quality, manufacturer safety information, and the exact device compatibility. A high wattage number alone does not prove suitability.
Power banks
Frequent travelers should consider a reputable USB-C Power Delivery power bank, especially for demanding games away from outlets. Confirm the power bank’s output and cable compatibility rather than assuming any USB-C battery will provide the same charging behavior. Do not promise docked TV-mode operation from an arbitrary power bank.
Screen protectors and handheld grips
A screen protector is a sensible protection purchase for most owners because the console is carried and repeatedly inserted into a dock. Choose one specifically advertised for Switch 2. Tempered glass generally offers better scratch and impact resistance but may add reflections or interfere with a tight case; film is thinner but generally offers less impact protection.

Install the protector before applying a tight shell or grip, and check that its edges leave enough bezel clearance for the case. It is practical protection, not a guarantee against every type of damage.
Handheld grips can improve comfort during long sessions, but they create a compatibility chain. Check comfort, weight, button and stick access, dock clearance, tabletop support, Joy-Con 2 removal, charging-stand fit, and whether the grip fits your travel case. A grip-only accessory is easiest to remove; a grip-and-case system offers more protection but may require removal for docking.
GameChat, cameras, headsets, and audio
Nintendo Switch 2 Camera
The Switch 2 Camera is a niche purchase rather than a standard starter accessory. Buy it if you regularly use GameChat with friends or family, or if a compatible game specifically uses camera functionality. Skip it if you play offline, play solo, or do not want video communication.

Headsets
The Switch 2 Pro Controller’s audio jack is a meaningful advantage for wired headsets. USB headsets connected through the dock and wireless Bluetooth headsets may also be useful, but microphone, chat, and software support can vary by exact headset and game. Verify the intended connection before buying, particularly if voice chat is the primary reason for the purchase.
Nintendo Switch accessory compatibility
“Compatible” can mean wireless pairing, physical attachment, charging, dock use, or game-specific support. Those are not interchangeable.
