How to calibrate Joy-Con 2 motion controls
Calibrate when tracking feels inaccurate or inconsistent. Nintendo’s procedure requires detached controllers and a flat, stable surface. Follow the steps in Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 calibration instructions:

- Update the Switch 2 system software.
- Detach both Joy-Con 2 controllers and remove their straps or other accessories.
- Open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Calibrate Motion Controls > Calibrate Controllers.
- On the controller you want to calibrate, hold the + or − button as prompted.
- Place the controller on a flat, stable surface with the control stick facing upward. Leave it still while calibration completes.
- Select OK when calibration is complete.
Keep the controller undisturbed during calibration. If a game still behaves incorrectly afterward, check its own controls and compatibility before repeating the calibration.
Which settings should you use in a sports game?
Think of this as two separate decisions: system calibration corrects the controller’s motion reference, while the game determines whether motion controls are enabled and how you use them. Nintendo notes that some games require motion controls to be turned on manually. Check the game’s controller or control-options menu, then follow its instructions for the particular sport. Options and supported controllers can vary by game and sport, so do not assume that one configuration works everywhere.

#1 Best Overall
- The updated Joy-Con 2 controllers have motion controls and HD rumble 2, along with the new C Button for easy GameChat* access and all-new mouse controls in compatible games.
- This set includes both a left and right Joy-Con 2 controller (along with a pair of Joy-Con 2 straps)—perfect for local multiplayer with a friend in compatible games.

Nintendo’s official Switch 2 support instructions establish a calibration procedure, not a universal sensitivity slider or recommended sensitivity values for sports games. Use a sensitivity option only if the specific game provides one, and follow that game’s guidance rather than applying a number from another title.
Recommended setup for Nintendo Switch Sports
Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode. Nintendo recommends playing on a Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, or Nintendo Switch – OLED Model in TV Mode. The game’s controller requirements also depend on the sport and mode; consult the Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ for its current compatibility details.
Rank #2
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
Neither the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller nor the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is supported in Nintendo Switch Sports. Use a supported Joy-Con configuration for the sport you want to play. If motion input does not respond, confirm that the game supports motion controls for that mode and that they are enabled where required.
Soccer and the Leg Strap
Nintendo Switch Sports includes Soccer Leg-Strap Mode, but Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Nintendo Switch Sports Leg Strap. The strap is relevant to players using compatible original Joy-Con controllers; Nintendo says original Joy-Con can be used wirelessly with Switch 2. The Leg Strap is an optional mode accessory, not a calibration tool or a general motion-accuracy fix.
Rank #3
- The Joy-Con 2 (L) controller includes the Capture Button.
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
Why are Switch 2 motion controls still off?
If motion tracking remains inaccurate, or calibration will not complete, work through Nintendo’s troubleshooting sequence. The instructions are for Joy-Con 2 on Switch 2; see Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 motion-control troubleshooting guide.
- Update the console’s system software.
- Update the controller firmware through the console’s controller settings.
- Reset the affected Joy-Con 2 by pressing its SYNC button.
- Run the motion calibration procedure above again.
- Check whether the game and the selected mode support motion controls, and enable them in the game if necessary.
If motion controls still fail in software that supports them, or the controller cannot be calibrated, Nintendo advises that the controller needs service.
