The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered PC Settings: Balance Graphics and Performance

Start with a sustainable resolution and frame-rate target, then compare upscaling and lighting options in the 2026 Remastered PC release.

The best Witcher 3 Remastered settings depend on the frame rate you can sustain at your chosen resolution—not on a universal preset. Start with conventional rendering, compare the upscaling options your hardware actually supports, then add ray-traced effects or Path Tracing only if the result still feels smooth. CD PROJEKT RED cautions that performance varies with the system, graphics settings, scene and output resolution.

Check that you are tuning the 2026 Remastered release

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launched on PC on September 29, 2026. It is a distinct release from the 2022 Next-Gen Update: the developer says the Remastered PC renderer is native DirectX 12 with multithreading, and the release adds Path Tracing alongside updated upscaling support. Owners of earlier physical or digital versions can upgrade for free within the same platform ecosystem. PC distribution includes Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store and Battle.net. See CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered feature announcement.

Install current graphics drivers before tuning. The developer also says an SSD is required for the latest technical enhancements, including loading and asset-streaming benefits; it does not claim that an SSD raises frame rate. See the current PC requirements and support notes.

Set a performance target before changing graphics

Choose the resolution you intend to play at and a frame rate your PC can maintain in the scenes that matter to you. Higher output resolution significantly affects FPS, and CD PROJEKT RED notes that its FPS targets come from QA testing, with occasional fluctuations possible. Its stated results are reference conditions, not a promise for every system: “Performance also may vary depending on your system configuration and any changes made to graphics settings or output resolution.”

#1 Best Overall
Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition - PC
  • Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
  • Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
  1. Update and establish a baseline. Use the current Remastered build and current GPU driver. Set your intended output resolution and begin with Path Tracing off.
  2. Compare in a repeatable scene. Use the same location, camera angle and resolution for each informal comparison. Look for both smoothness and image quality rather than relying on one momentary FPS reading.
  3. Change one group at a time. First compare native rendering with the upscaler modes available to you; then test lighting features. This makes it easier to identify which change causes a performance or visual difference.
  4. Stop at the best sustainable balance. If a feature makes movement or combat feel less consistent, revert it or lower another setting. A single universal “best” preset cannot account for different GPUs, resolutions and scenes.

Choose the lighting workload: conventional, ray tracing or Path Tracing

Start with conventional rendering for a baseline. If you want to explore ray tracing, compare selected effects with the baseline rather than assuming every ray-traced option should be enabled. The Remastered release also includes Ray-Traced HairWorks.

Path Tracing is a broader rendering tradeoff, not simply one more isolated effect. NVIDIA describes ray tracing as improving selected scene aspects such as reflections or shadows, while Path Tracing combines lighting and rendering into a unified approach with more rays and multiple light bounces. That distinction explains why Path Tracing can be more demanding; the visual improvement and performance cost depend on your system and preferences. NVIDIA’s explanation is at GeForce News.

Use the upscaler your GPU and game build expose

Upscaling can reduce the internal rendering resolution while preserving your selected output resolution, but the available technology depends on hardware. The Remastered announcement lists DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction, FSR 4 with Frame Generation and Anti-Lag 2 on Radeon RX 7000 Series and newer (FSR 2 on unsupported GPUs), and XeSS 2.0 with Frame Generation and Low Latency. Check the options shown in your own game build rather than assuming all three paths or all features are available on every PC.

At your intended output resolution, compare the available quality modes in the same scene. Judge whether the image remains acceptable while play feels smooth; there is no evidence-backed universal mode recommendation for every GPU and resolution. Frame Generation is also worth evaluating as a separate option, not treating it as a substitute for a stable base experience. The official feature information documents support but does not establish one latency or image-quality recommendation that applies to every system.

Compare the main graphics choices

Choice What changes How to evaluate it
Native output resolution Renders at the chosen output resolution; higher output resolution significantly affects FPS, according to CD PROJEKT RED. Use as a baseline, then compare against supported upscaling modes at the same output resolution.
Upscaling Uses a lower internal render resolution to produce the chosen output; options and features depend on GPU support and the game build. Compare available quality modes in the same scene and inspect image quality as well as smoothness.
Selected ray-traced effects Applies ray tracing to particular effects, such as reflections or shadows; NVIDIA distinguishes this from Path Tracing. Enable or disable effects deliberately and decide whether their visual contribution is worth the system-specific cost.
Path Tracing Uses a unified lighting and rendering approach; NVIDIA describes more rays and multiple light bounces. Test after establishing a non-Path-Traced baseline, and keep it only if performance remains acceptable to you.

Fine-tune conventional visual settings without guessing at FPS gains

When the broad rendering choices are settled, adjust conventional visual settings in small groups. CD PROJEKT RED’s 2022 Next-Gen notes identify Ultra+ categories including background character count, shadows, grass density, texture quality, foliage visibility range, terrain, water and detail. These are useful areas to inspect, but those historical notes do not rank their FPS cost in the 2026 Remastered release. Change a setting, revisit the same scene and decide based on your own system rather than assuming one category is always the best performance cut. The older list is available in the Next-Gen Update change notes.

Check operating system support if performance or compatibility is poor

CD PROJEKT RED says Windows 10 may continue to run the next game update, but the developer no longer develops or tests on that operating system and cannot guarantee compatibility or performance. Its support page also says older versions may be available to revert to depending on platform. If an update introduces a problem, check that support information and your platform’s available version options before treating a graphics setting as the cause.

When local hardware is not enough

NVIDIA identifies GeForce NOW streaming as an access option for players without a local RTX PC capable of the enhanced experience. This is an alternative to running the graphics workload locally, not a setting that improves a PC’s frame rate. Availability and membership details can vary, so check NVIDIA’s current Remastered and GeForce NOW announcement before relying on it.
