If you want to explore while discovering creatures, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the closest fit: its field research, catching, and Pokédex progression put exploration at the center. Choose Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet if you want a broad world with the familiar Pokémon loop of catching, battling, and training. For an adventure without Pokémon, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom trade creature collecting for traversal, puzzles, and open-ended discovery.
Which open-world Switch game fits the kind of exploration you want?
“Open world” can mean very different activities. The useful distinction is whether you want to study and catch Pokémon, travel through Paldea while playing a mainline Pokémon adventure, or explore a world where navigation and environmental puzzles are the point.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the strongest match for creature discovery
Choose Pokémon Legends: Arceus if the appeal of an open world is getting out into the field to find Pokémon, rather than simply crossing a large map between battles. Its official description centers on exploring Hisui, catching Pokémon, and completing the Pokédex. Field research feeds progression and helps open more survey areas, so exploration is part of the game’s core routine.
This is the best fit for players who like the idea of approaching Pokémon as something to observe and seek out. It remains a Pokémon adventure, but its emphasis on fieldwork makes it a distinct choice from a mainline game built around the familiar catch-and-battle structure.
#1 Best Overall

- The Pokémon Shining Pearl game brings new life to this remade classic with added features
- Explore the Grand Underground to dig up items and Pokémon Fossils, build a Secret Base, and more.
- Test your style and rhythm in a Super Contest Show
- A reimagined adventure, now for the Nintendo Switch system
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet keep the mainline loop in a wide-open setting
Choose Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet if you want to explore a broad region without leaving behind the series’ central premise of catching, battling, and training Pokémon. The games take place in Paldea, and travel is tied to the Legendary Pokémon associated with each version: Koraidon in Scarlet and Miraidon in Violet.
Play Nintendo describes the games as letting players explore a wide-open world at their own pace and travel across land, water, and air with those Pokémon. That is the games’ official promotional description, rather than an independent assessment. The practical distinction from Legends: Arceus is the kind of Pokémon play you want: Paldea exploration alongside the mainline catch-and-battle premise, rather than field research as the defining activity.
Breath of the Wild shifts the focus to Hyrule, climbing, and puzzles
If Pokémon is less important than the feeling of finding your own way through a world, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a strong alternative. Nintendo highlights surveying Hyrule, climbing, and solving shrine puzzles. Instead of building a Pokédex, you explore the landscape and work out how to reach and navigate its places.
Rank #2
- Embark on a new Pokémon adventure
- Catch, battle, and train Pokémon in the Paldea Region, a vast land filled with lakes, towering peaks, wastelands, small towns, and sprawling cities.
- Choose either Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly, to be your first partner Pokémon before setting off on your journey through Paldea.
- Embark on an independent study called the Treasure Hunt to gain new experiences, meet new people, and find your very own treasure.
Pick it when you want exploration to be driven by movement through the environment and puzzle-solving, not by catching creatures or building a Pokémon team.
Tears of the Kingdom adds a vertical route through Hyrule
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom offers another large Hyrule adventure, with sprawling landscapes and floating sky islands. Nintendo’s description emphasizes choosing your own path, making it the fit here for players drawn to open-ended discovery and the added prospect of exploring above the ground.
It is a Zelda adventure, not a Pokémon substitute in the literal sense: the connection is the freedom to explore and discover, rather than creature collection.
Rank #3
- Action meets RPG in this new take on the Pokémon series
- Study Pokémon behaviors, sneak up on them, and toss a well-aimed Poké Ball to catch them
- Unleash moves in the speedy agile style or the powerful strong style in battles
- Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex
- Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale
How to choose between these four games
- Want to catch and study Pokémon in the field? Start with Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
- Want a wide-open setting with familiar Pokémon battles and training? Choose Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet.
- Want exploration and environmental puzzles without Pokémon? Choose Breath of the Wild.
- Want another self-directed Hyrule adventure, including sky-island exploration? Choose Tears of the Kingdom.
These are fit-based recommendations, not a measured ranking. Each game’s official description supports a different kind of exploration, so the deciding question is whether you most want creature discovery, mainline Pokémon progression, traversal and puzzles, or open-ended discovery.
