For context, Nintendo’s worldwide life-to-date sales table dated June 30, 2026 lists Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 71.53 million units, Animal Crossing: New Horizons at 50.29 million, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at 38.14 million. It also lists The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at 34.06 million, Super Mario Odyssey at 30.80 million, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom at 22.71 million. Those are worldwide life-to-date sales, including bundled and downloaded software—not a measure of current demand or a ranking of quality. Nintendo’s official Switch software sales table explains the figures and scope.
Best Switch games for multiplayer
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — best for an easy group pick
This is the most straightforward recommendation for a group with mixed experience: the racing is immediately legible, while learning tracks and improving your driving gives regular players room to compete. Nintendo’s UK product page says local wireless multiplayer supports play “with up to eight friends.” It is also the highest-selling Switch software in Nintendo’s June 30, 2026 sales snapshot, though sales alone do not explain its appeal. Nintendo UK’s game catalog provides the local-play description.
Recommended Free Tools
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — best for competitive brawling
Choose Super Smash Bros. Ultimate when the group wants a fighting game with a broad roster rather than a race. Its appeal is strongest for players who enjoy learning characters, matchups, and techniques; for a first-time group, expect some people to need time to get comfortable. Nintendo’s sales table places it third among listed Switch software, with 38.14 million worldwide life-to-date units as of June 30, 2026. That figure is context, not a verdict on competitive depth.
Splatoon 3 — best for online team shooting
Splatoon 3 is a colorful team shooter for players who want online matches without a military setting. It is the pick here for a coordinated online session rather than a couch-friendly party game; consult the game’s current listing for platform, online-service, and mode details before purchase.
Rank #2
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
Best Switch games for solo exploration
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild — best first open-air adventure
Breath of the Wild is the clearest choice if you want a large world to explore at your own pace. Nintendo’s UK product description frames the journey around Link regaining his memories after a 100-year slumber, and Nintendo Life’s 2026 reader-rated list places it first. Its open-ended structure rewards curiosity, but it is a substantial adventure rather than a compact, mission-by-mission game. Nintendo reports 34.06 million worldwide life-to-date sales as of June 30, 2026.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom — best for a follow-up in Hyrule
Tears of the Kingdom is a sequel that builds on the setting and experience of Breath of the Wild. Pick it if you specifically want another expansive Hyrule adventure; it is not simply a replacement for the first game or the only correct place to begin Zelda. Nintendo Life describes it as a sequel building on the earlier world. Nintendo’s sales table records 22.71 million worldwide life-to-date units as of June 30, 2026.
Rank #3
- Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
- Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
- Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
- Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
- Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam
Metroid Prime Remastered — best for atmospheric first-person exploration
For a more solitary and tense adventure, Metroid Prime Remastered trades Zelda’s open-air fantasy for first-person science-fiction exploration. The Guardian includes it among its Switch recommendations, highlighting its different tone from more colorful platformers. Consider it if you enjoy exploring unfamiliar environments and prefer a more atmospheric solo game.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus — best for a different Pokémon adventure
Pokémon Legends: Arceus changes the familiar Pokémon rhythm with an exploration-led structure and a more demanding capture loop, as described by The Guardian. It suits players who want a Pokémon game that feels distinct from the conventional journey of collecting and battling through gyms.
Rank #4
- Journey through space in two Super Mario adventures, now improved for the Nintendo Switch system!
- Travel the stars with enhanced resolution, improved UI, and additional content
- Learn more about the Lumas from additional Storybook chapters, groove to a bit of additional music
- Get additional Health and fall recovery in Assist Mode
- Join Rosalina and the Lumas to restore the Comet Observatory and rescue Princess Peach in Super Mario Galaxy.
Best Switch games for platforming and role-playing
Super Mario Odyssey — best 3D platformer
Super Mario Odyssey is the pick for nimble movement, varied worlds, and playful platforming. TechRadar reviewer Jake Green points to its range of worlds and Cappy transformations. It is a more focused fit than either Zelda adventure if you want a bright, level-rich solo game instead of a long open world. Nintendo reports 30.80 million worldwide life-to-date sales as of June 30, 2026.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom — best for a different Zelda approach
Echoes of Wisdom widens the choices for players who want Zelda but are interested in a different set of mechanics. TechRadar highlights its new mechanics; choose it for that change of approach rather than assuming every Zelda game offers the same style of exploration.

- Play Link’s in-game ocarina by humming or singing into the Nintendo Switch 2 system microphone
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door — best story-led RPG option
TechRadar recommends the Switch remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for its role-playing qualities. It is a useful alternative if you want a characterful RPG rather than a real-time action adventure or platformer.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons — best for island life and customization
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is built around a gentle routine of collecting, fishing, decorating, and shaping an island. GameSpot also highlights visiting friends. It fits players who want a low-pressure game to revisit over time, not a tightly paced campaign. Nintendo’s June 30, 2026 snapshot lists 50.29 million worldwide life-to-date units, including bundled and downloaded software.
Stardew Valley — best for farming and a slower routine
Stardew Valley combines farming with exploration and social play, making it a strong choice for players who want a calm game with several activities to rotate between. The Guardian includes it among its Switch picks. Its pace is intentionally different from an urgent action game: progress comes through repeated visits and small goals.
How to choose—and what to check before buying
- Want a game night? Choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for accessible racing, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for fighting, or Splatoon 3 for online team shooting.
- Want a long solo adventure? Pick Breath of the Wild for an open-air starting point, or Tears of the Kingdom for a sequel in the same setting. Both are substantial games.
- Want a shorter-session feel? Mario Kart suits individual races; Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley suit returning for small tasks. These are differences in play structure, not a promise that any game has a fixed session length.
- Want familiar Nintendo characters in a different genre? Try Super Mario Odyssey for platforming, Metroid Prime Remastered for first-person exploration, or Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for role-playing.
- Buying for Switch 2? Confirm the exact edition and platform on the official product listing. The fact that a game is part of the Switch library does not, by itself, establish its backward compatibility, upgrade requirements, or Switch 2 performance.
Lists also use different methods: Nintendo Life’s ranking is based on reader ratings, while GameSpot’s 2026 selection presents games alphabetically rather than as a ranked list. This guide instead groups a broad set of games by genre and player fit, so its order is not a review ranking. See Nintendo Life’s 2026 list, GameSpot’s 2026 selection, The Guardian’s 2026 picks, and TechRadar’s recommendations for their respective approaches.
