For Classic Nerdle, 52-34=18 is a strong first guess: NerdleBuddy ranks it first in its model-based opener analysis. Its next two picks are 48-32=16 and 52-38=14. The displayed expected total is 3.0 guesses for all three, so treat the ordering as a model-specific recommendation—not proof that one opener is universally best.

Best starting equations for Classic Nerdle

These three equations are NerdleBuddy’s top-ranked answer-form openers, according to a ranking page last updated July 31, 2026. The page evaluates 17,723 openers and reports expected total guesses rounded to one decimal place; it says the underlying ranking retains unrounded precision.

Starting equation NerdleBuddy rank Displayed expected total guesses What the result means
52-34=18 1 3.0 Top-ranked opener in this model and follow-up strategy.
48-32=16 2 3.0 Close alternative in the same model.
52-38=14 3 3.0 Another close alternative in the same model.

The displayed averages tie because they are rounded; the ordinal ranking reflects finer underlying values, not a visible difference in the one-decimal results. NerdleBuddy also cautions that its ranking does not establish that no other strategy could do better. See NerdleBuddy’s opener rankings.

Why these openers can help

A useful first guess tests a spread of digits and operators, while still forming a valid equation of the required length. These examples use different digits and subtraction, so the tiles can reveal information about which characters occur and where they belong. The ranking measures performance within NerdleBuddy’s chosen model and follow-up strategy; it is not a guarantee of how many guesses a particular player will need.

How Classic Nerdle works

Classic Nerdle asks you to identify a hidden eight-character equation in six guesses. Every guess must itself be a mathematically correct equation, contain exactly one equals sign, and have a number after it. The official rules specify that normal order of operations applies: “Standard order of operations applies, so × and ÷ are calculated before + and −.” Read the official Classic Nerdle rules.

  • Green: the character is correct and in the correct position.
  • Purple: the character appears in the answer but is in a different position.
  • Gray: the character does not appear in the answer.

After your first guess, use the tile feedback to narrow down both the characters and their positions. The official teacher and help guidance recommends varying digits and operators to gather information. See Nerdle’s teacher and help guidance.

What the ranking does—and does not—show

The official Nerdle homepage describes its solution list as 17,723 creator-curated solutions. NerdleBuddy separately says it ranked 17,723 answer-form openers. These are different counts of different things: one describes the official curated solution set; the other describes the openers assessed by the independent ranking. Visit the official Nerdle homepage.

The ranking is useful evidence for choosing a practical opener, but it is not an official endorsement from Nerdle’s creators or a proof of global optimality. If you prefer a simple rule over following a ranking, choose a legal equation with varied digits and operators, then let the tile feedback guide your next guess.
