There isn’t one best Nintendo Switch VR headset: the right choice depends on which games you want to play and which Switch model you own. Nintendo’s Labo Toy-Con VR Goggles are for supported Labo VR games on the original Switch, while its Virtual Boy accessories are for the separate Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics library on Switch and Switch 2. Neither option works with Switch Lite.
Which Nintendo Switch VR option should you choose?
| Accessory | What it works with | Console compatibility | What to know before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Labo Toy-Con VR Goggles, included in Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit | VR mode in games that support it, including the Labo VR experience | Original standard Switch. Switch OLED can use it with a caveat. Not Switch Lite or Switch 2. | Buy the kit, not just a generic viewer; for a used kit, check that the goggles and other pieces you need are present and in usable condition. |
| Virtual Boy (Cardboard Model) | Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics | Switch and Switch 2; not Switch Lite | Requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack to access the game library. |
| Virtual Boy accessory | Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics | Switch and Switch 2; not Switch Lite | A more substantial viewer with a stand and attachments. The game library requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. |
These accessories serve different software libraries; they are not interchangeable general-purpose VR headsets. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance does not establish that one has better optics, comfort, or value, or identify a best third-party Switch VR headset.
Choose by your Switch model
Original standard Nintendo Switch
For Labo VR-supported games, the matching option is the Toy-Con VR Goggles included in Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit. For Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics, Nintendo’s Virtual Boy accessories are a separate option.
Nintendo Switch OLED
Nintendo says Labo VR is usable on Switch OLED, but its 7-inch screen may affect the VR effect. In the Labo software, turn “VR Mode Auto-Switch” off. Nintendo also lists the OLED model as compatible with the Virtual Boy accessories.

What each accessory is for
Labo Toy-Con VR Goggles
The Labo goggles are part of Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit, a kit for supported games’ VR modes. They do not make every Switch game playable in VR. Nintendo says the goggles are not compatible with Switch 2 or Switch Lite. Its Labo VR guidance explains the OLED caveat and setting.
Virtual Boy viewing accessories
Nintendo offers a cardboard model and a more substantial Virtual Boy accessory for the Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics library. The more substantial accessory’s official US product listing gives a release date of February 17, 2026, and says its package includes the accessory, stand, Switch and Switch 2 attachments, eye shade, and lens cover. Check the listing for current availability and package details: Nintendo of America Store.

Access to Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, separately from owning a viewing accessory. For US purchases through Nintendo Store, Nintendo says a paid Nintendo Switch Online or Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership is required to buy the accessories; free-trial members cannot purchase them. Nintendo says they are sold only through Nintendo Store to eligible members in the US or Canada and are not limited-time offers. Availability and terms can change, so confirm them with Nintendo’s current support FAQ before buying.

- Name the software first. For Labo VR-supported games, look at the Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit. For Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics, choose between Nintendo’s Virtual Boy viewing accessories.
- Check the console model. The official accessories discussed here do not work with Switch Lite. Labo goggles do not work with Switch 2; Virtual Boy accessories do.
- Confirm the library requirement. Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Buying a viewer alone does not provide access to the games.
- Check the exact purchase terms. Nintendo’s US support page describes member eligibility and Nintendo Store availability for the Virtual Boy accessories. For a used Labo kit, verify condition and completeness with the seller.
Safety and comfort guidance
Nintendo says VR Mode should only be used by players age 7 and up. Its VR settings guidance covers Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. For Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics, Nintendo advises starting with short sessions while acclimating and stopping to take a break if you feel unwell.
Is there a best third-party VR headset for Switch?
Nintendo’s guidance establishes the official accessory paths above, but does not establish a reliable ranking of third-party headsets or comparative results for their optics, comfort, or value. Treat claims that a third-party viewer is the “best” as unverified unless they specify the exact Switch model and software and support their claims with credible, comparable evidence.
