| Provider and plan reference | Published or reported resources | Price information | Where it fits | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vultr High Performance | NVMe storage with newer AMD or Intel CPUs | $6.00 per month listed on the 2026 pricing page | Developer tools, game services, and I/O-sensitive applications that need a clearly identified NVMe tier | Vultr Regular Performance starts at $2.50 per month but uses standard SSD, not NVMe. One pricing result was reported as roughly 531 days old, so verify the live page. |
| Hetzner CX23 | 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe, 20 TB transfer in one third-party table | $3.99 per month in that table | Low-cost databases, development servers, and European game communities | Prices conflict across sources. A reported April 1, 2026 adjustment raised most plans by 30–37%, while other tables show different euro amounts. Confirm the provider’s current price. |
| Contabo Cloud VPS 10 | 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 75 GB NVMe in one third-party review | $4.50 per month in that review | Modded game servers, media caches, and workloads that value capacity over the lowest latency | Contabo’s own explanation places NVMe on the Plus (Performance) line and standard SSD on Core VPS. Backups are an add-on in one guide; check the exact product. |
| UpCloud | Not stated in the cited comparison entry | €3/$3.50 per month listed by one comparison table | Potential budget option when a nearby location and verified specification are available | Neither the quoted resources nor the NVMe scope were verified. A 2–4x random-read advantage is a single-reviewer claim with no published methodology. |
| OVHcloud VPS with NVMe | NVMe storage; free IPv4/IPv6 and default anti-DDoS were listed by reviews | One comparison estimated renewal at about 45% above the introductory price | International communities and services that need a broad data-centre footprint | The renewal estimate is low confidence. Check the recurring total, traffic allowance, and protection terms for the exact region. |
What “NVMe VPS” actually means
NVMe is a storage protocol and device class designed for PCI Express, not a promise that every virtual machine will be fast. A provider can advertise NVMe on one product family while another family still uses SATA or standard SSD. Virtualization, noisy neighbours, CPU scheduling, filesystem settings, and the provider’s storage array all affect the result.
For a multiplayer game server, NVMe usually matters most when the process frequently reads or writes world data, generates region files, loads large mod packs, writes logs, or performs backups. It does not eliminate network latency, improve a distant player’s route, or compensate for insufficient CPU. A lightly modded server with a small world may see little difference between good SSD and NVMe, while a busy modded instance can spend noticeably less time waiting on saves and asset loads.

- MEET THE NEXT GEN: Consider this a cheat code; Our Samsung 990 PRO Gen4 SSD helps you reach near max performance with lightning-fast speeds; Whether you’re a hardcore gamer or a tech guru, you’ll get power efficiency built for the final boss
- REACH THE NEXT LEVEL: Gen4 steps up with faster transfer speeds and high-performance bandwidth; With a more than 55% improvement in random performance compared to 980 PRO, it’s here for heavy computing and faster loading
- THE FASTEST SSD FROM THE WORLD'S FLASH MEMORY BRAND: The speed you need for any occasion; With read and write speeds up to 7450/6900 MB/s you’ll reach near max performance of PCIe 4.0 powering through for any use
- PLAY WITHOUT LIMITS: Give yourself some space with storage capacities from 1TB to 4TB; Sync all your saves and reign supreme in gaming, video editing, data analysis and more
- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
Database, CI, and developer workloads can benefit from the same characteristics. Random reads and synchronous writes are often more important than a headline sequential-throughput number. Your own test on the exact plan and location is therefore more useful than a generic “NVMe is x times faster” statement.
Provider-by-provider guidance
Vultr: the clearest published NVMe choice
Vultr’s 2026 pricing information distinguishes Regular Performance, which uses standard SSD, from High Performance, which uses NVMe and newer AMD or Intel CPUs. That explicit split makes it easier to avoid accidentally ordering an SSD machine when you need NVMe. High Performance is the sensible starting point for a database, build cache, or game service whose storage waits show up in monitoring.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Choose a location close to the majority of players or users rather than assuming the fastest disk will offset a long network path. Treat older cached pricing pages cautiously and verify the live monthly and hourly figures before deploying. If you need a cheaper development box, Regular Performance may be adequate, but it should not be described as an NVMe VPS.
Hetzner: compelling value, but verify 2026 pricing
Hetzner is frequently described as the value leader, particularly for European deployments. The commonly cited CX23 example combines two virtual CPUs, 4 GB of memory, 40 GB of NVMe storage, and 20 TB of transfer. However, published tables disagree on both the currency amounts and the effect of an April 1, 2026 adjustment that was reported as a 30–37% increase on most plans.
Rank #2
- PCIe 4.0 Performance: Delivers up to 7,100 MB/s read and 6,000 MB/s write speeds for quicker game load times, bootups, and smooth multitasking
- Spacious 1TB SSD: Provides space for AAA games, apps, and media with standard Gen4 NVMe performance for casual gamers and home users
- Broad Compatibility: Works seamlessly with laptops, desktops, and select gaming consoles including ROG Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, and AYANEO Kun. Also backward compatible with PCIe Gen3 systems for flexible upgrades
- Better Productivity: Up to 2x faster than previous Gen3 generation. Improve performance for real world tasks like booting Windows, starting applications like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and working in applications like Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
- Trusted Micron Quality: Built with advanced G8 NAND and thermal control for reliable Gen4 performance trusted by gamers and home users
That conflict is material: a low monthly rate can stop being the cheapest option after a plan change or renewal. Confirm the current recurring price, included transfer, backup charge, and the selected location directly during ordering. Hetzner’s locations are mainly European in reviewer coverage, so another provider may be a better choice for players in North America, Asia, or Oceania even if the disk economics look attractive.
Contabo: high capacity per dollar, with an NVMe-tier trap
A third-party review lists Cloud VPS 10 with four virtual CPUs, 8 GB of RAM, and 75 GB of NVMe storage for $4.50 per month. That resource density can suit modded servers, staging environments, and applications that need more memory and disk than an entry-level instance provides.
Do not infer that every Contabo VPS uses NVMe. Contabo’s own product explanation places NVMe on its Plus (Performance) line and standard SSD on Core VPS. Select the line and plan that explicitly states NVMe, then confirm the storage type in the order summary. Also price backups separately; one guide treats them as an add-on rather than an included service.
UpCloud: investigate before relying on the headline price
One comparison table lists UpCloud at €3/$3.50 per month but gives no CPU, memory, storage, transfer, or NVMe details. That is not enough information to compare it fairly with a specified plan. A reviewer also claims a 2–4x random-read advantage, but no methodology is published and the result comes from a single source.

Use UpCloud only after you can confirm the exact disk type, resource limits, traffic policy, backup cost, and recurring price for your location. A short trial with your own workload should precede any production move.
OVHcloud: broad reach and network protections
Reviews describe OVHcloud VPS offerings with NVMe storage, free IPv4 and IPv6, and default anti-DDoS protection. Those characteristics can be useful for public game servers and globally distributed services, where connectivity and basic attack mitigation are part of the decision.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompare the renewal total rather than the introductory amount. One comparison estimated a renewal about 45% higher than the initial price, but confidence in that estimate is low and the actual difference depends on the product and region. Read the current traffic, backup, and anti-DDoS terms before treating those features as equivalent to a specialist mitigation service.
Match the VPS to your workload
Game servers
- Prioritize single-thread CPU performance and consistent latency for the simulation or tick loop.
- Choose enough RAM for the game, map, plugins, and operating-system cache; NVMe cannot make a memory-starved server stable.
- Use NVMe when world saves, mod loading, map generation, or frequent backups are observable bottlenecks.
- Select a region near players. A fast disk in a distant continent can still produce poor gameplay.
- Check whether outbound transfer is included and whether backup snapshots incur a separate charge.
Databases and transactional applications
- Look for random-read and synchronous-write consistency rather than only sequential throughput.
- Reserve memory for the database cache and leave headroom for connections, extensions, and the operating system.
- Use a trial to measure your actual query mix with
pgbenchor an equivalent workload. - Plan storage growth and off-instance backups; a larger local disk is not a backup strategy.
Build servers, CI runners, and developer tooling
- NVMe can shorten dependency extraction, compiler cache access, container-layer operations, and test-artifact handling.
- Compare sustained CPU capacity and included transfer as carefully as disk speed because parallel builds can saturate either resource.
- Use an hourly or short-term instance for repeatable tests, then check the monthly equivalent before committing.
Web services and caches
- For a read-heavy cache, RAM often provides a larger improvement than moving from good SSD to NVMe.
- For log-heavy or write-heavy services, measure filesystem latency and queue depth under realistic concurrency.
- Place the VPS close to your users or origin services and confirm IPv4, IPv6, and firewall behavior.
How to compare real NVMe performance
Published benchmark figures for these providers are vendor or reviewer claims, not independently published statistics with a named owner and year. Claims of more than 450,000 4K random-read IOPS with sub-0.3 ms latency on certain Vultr High Frequency and Hetzner CCX instances, and a 15–20% lead over another premium virtual-machine product, do not include enough methodology to predict your result.

- HIGH-OCTANE GAMING. Experience speeds up to 7,250MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write (1-2TB models), with up to 35% faster performance than previous generation.
- PURPOSE-BUILT. Designed for serious on-the-go gamers, with a PCIe Gen4 interface and SANDISK’s next generation TLC 3D NAND.
- MORE TIME TO CLEAR THAT CHECKPOINT. Built with laptops and handheld gaming devices in mind, with up to 100% more power efficiency over the previous generation.
- DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).
Run the same test on equivalent plans, in the same region, with the same operating-system image. Do not benchmark a busy production disk or a machine containing another customer’s data.
- Create trial instances. Select the exact CPU, memory, storage tier, and region you would purchase. Record the advertised monthly and hourly prices, included transfer, and backup options.
- Update the system and install the test tools. Keep the image and filesystem configuration consistent. Stop unrelated services so background activity does not distort results.
- Run a 4K random-read test. For Linux, a representative command is
fio --name=randread --filename=/tmp/fio-test --size=4G --rw=randread --bs=4k --iodepth=32 --numjobs=4 --runtime=60 --time_based --direct=1 --ioengine=libaio --group_reporting. Delete the test file afterward. - Repeat at different times. Run three passes at different times of day and record IOPS, latency, bandwidth, and error output. Variability can be more important than the best single run.
- Test the application path. For PostgreSQL, initialize a disposable database with
pgbench -i -s 50 dbname, then runpgbench -c 32 -j 4 -T 120 dbname. Use a scale and concurrency level that fit the memory of the chosen plan. - Compare cost at renewal. Put measured performance beside the recurring price, transfer allowance, backup cost, and support terms. Reject a plan that wins a benchmark but fails your budget after the introductory period.
Pricing, renewals, and the costs people miss
Introductory prices are not a reliable comparison point. Some listings combine a low first-term promotion with a higher renewal, while others show a recurring rate. The difference can be substantial: one low-confidence comparison estimated an OVHcloud renewal roughly 45% above its introduction, and another listing cites a $1.99 introductory offer for a budget NVMe VPS whose regular listing was $4.99. Because that provider is not included in the recommendations here, use the broader lesson: always inspect the post-promotion invoice.
Check these items before ordering:
- Monthly renewal price and whether taxes are shown separately.
- Hourly billing, minimum commitment, and deletion or reinstallation charges.
- Whether the advertised disk is NVMe on the exact plan, not merely somewhere in the product family.
- Included transfer, overage rates, and port speed limits.
- IPv4 charges, IPv6 availability, and whether addresses remain after a rebuild.
- Automated backups, snapshot retention, and restore fees.
- Regional price differences and currency conversion.
Deployment checklist for a new NVMe VPS
- Choose the region by users. Measure latency from representative player or customer networks before selecting the data centre.
- Confirm storage in writing. Save the order summary or specification showing NVMe for the exact plan.
- Install a supported operating system. Apply updates, create a non-root administrator, disable password-only SSH, and use a firewall that exposes only required ports.
- Separate application and backup concerns. Keep at least one backup outside the VPS and test a restore before relying on it.
- Set resource limits. Configure game-process CPU affinity or container limits, database memory ceilings, and log rotation so one service cannot consume the host allocation.
- Monitor before tuning. Collect CPU steal time, memory pressure, disk latency, queue depth, network loss, tick time, and backup duration.
- Load-test safely. Use a staging world or disposable database and increase concurrency gradually. Stop if latency or error rates become abnormal.
Common failure modes and fixes
The plan says “SSD” after checkout
Some catalogs use SSD as a generic label even when only a higher tier is NVMe. Recheck the product family, line, and order summary. If the storage type is not explicit, open a support ticket before paying or choose a plan with an unambiguous specification.
Disk benchmarks look excellent but the game still lags
Check tick time, single-core saturation, CPU steal, packet loss, and player distance. NVMe affects storage waits; it cannot repair an overloaded simulation thread or a poor network route.
Best Value
- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
Performance varies between runs
Record all three test passes and inspect latency percentiles, not only average IOPS. Variation can indicate shared-storage contention, background snapshots, or a workload that exceeds the virtual CPU allocation. Test again at another time and compare another region or provider.
The bill is higher than expected
Look for renewal repricing, taxes, backup storage, extra IPv4 addresses, transfer overage, and a different currency conversion. Recalculate the full monthly total before resizing or migrating.
The VPS runs out of space despite having NVMe
NVMe describes speed, not capacity. Check world files, container layers, package caches, logs, and database growth. Add rotation and retention rules, then resize storage or move archival data before the filesystem reaches 100%.
A practical decision framework
- Set non-negotiables: region, minimum RAM, CPU threads, storage capacity, transfer, IPv4/IPv6, and backup requirements.
- Remove plans without confirmed NVMe. Do not treat a provider-wide marketing statement as proof for the selected tier.
- Shortlist by workload. Vultr is the clearest NVMe-tier choice; Hetzner is worth checking for European value; Contabo suits capacity-heavy deployments when the Plus line is selected; UpCloud requires specification verification; OVHcloud fits globally distributed services that value broad reach and listed network protections.
- Benchmark two or three finalists. Use identical fio and application tests, three times at different hours.
- Choose on recurring economics. Include backups, transfer, addresses, taxes, and renewal pricing rather than the first invoice.
- Keep a migration path. Automate images, configuration, and off-site backups so a price change or noisy host does not lock in your service.
Bottom line
The best NVMe VPS in 2026 is the one that delivers stable application performance in the region your users need at a renewal price you can sustain. Start with a clearly labeled NVMe tier, validate it with fio and a realistic application test, and treat every promotional price or third-party benchmark as provisional until the provider’s current order page and your own measurements agree.
