There is no official OBS preset for a 24/7 sleep-sounds stream. Choose filters only to fix a problem you can hear: noise suppression for mild unwanted noise, a compressor for occasional loud peaks, and an expander or gate only when reducing quiet audio will not damage the sound bed. If you use a limiter, place it last. Test the quietest and loudest parts before you go live.
Choose filters by the problem you need to solve
OBS lets you add filters to an individual source or audio device. First identify which source is producing the sleep audio, then apply processing there rather than automatically building a voice-focused chain. A stable ambient track may need no filters at all.
| Filter | Use it when | Watch for | Placement guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Noise suppression | The source has mild background or white noise, such as fan noise. | It may alter wanted sound; stronger Speex suppression can distort other sounds. OBS says suppression is generally ineffective with large amounts of background noise. | OBS does not give a universal placement rule for a sleep-audio chain. |
| Gate | You need background noise cut off when a source is quiet. | It can also cut off quiet portions of continuous ambience. OBS’s explanation is framed around speaking. | No universal sleep-stream placement is specified by OBS. |
| Expander | You want to reduce signal below a threshold, with smoother opening and closing than a fixed gate may provide. | Quiet intended sounds can be reduced too. OBS’s defaults are not sleep-audio settings. | After compression or other effects, before a limiter. |
| Compressor | The source has occasional loud excursions above a threshold. | It may be unnecessary on consistently leveled ambient audio. | Near the beginning of the chain. |
| Limiter | You need to cap peaks to help avoid clipping and distortion. | A peak cap is not a complete loudness target. | Last in the chain. |
These roles and placement notes reflect OBS Project’s filter guides, not listening tests on sleep sounds. The documentation does not publish a one-click preset or settings validated for this use.
When to use noise suppression
OBS describes noise suppression as a way to remove mild background or white noise. It identifies RNNoise as higher quality but more CPU-intensive than Speex; that is OBS’s qualitative comparison, not a quantified benchmark. The guide cautions that large amounts of background noise are generally beyond the filter’s effectiveness and that stronger Speex suppression can distort other sounds.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For an ambient bed, compare the filtered and unfiltered signal across both quiet and busy sections. Keep suppression only if it reduces the unwanted noise without audibly changing the content you want viewers to hear.
Use a gate or expander cautiously
Gate
A noise gate reduces or cuts signal below its thresholds. OBS describes it as cutting background noise while a person is not speaking, with separate open and close thresholds. That behavior can be a poor match for continuous sleep audio if quiet intervals are part of the recording. Listen closely for sounds disappearing or opening abruptly.

Expander
An expander reduces signal below a threshold and can serve as an alternative to a gate. OBS says its adjustable ratio can make opening and closing smoother than a fixed gate. Its guide gives defaults of a 2.00:1 ratio and -40.00 dB threshold, plus recommended starting ranges of 5–10 ms attack and 50–120 ms release. These are OBS software guidance and defaults, not validated sleep-stream settings. Adjust only while monitoring the quietest intended material.
Compress only if the audio has loud excursions
OBS describes a compressor as reducing louder signal above a threshold and places it near the beginning of a filter chain. Its guide discusses a source, typically a microphone, that sometimes becomes much louder. If your ambient file is already consistent, the official guidance does not establish a need to compress it.

OBS lists compressor defaults of a 10:1 ratio, -18.00 dB threshold, 6 ms attack, and 60 ms release. Treat these as software defaults, not recommended targets for sleep audio. If you add compression, check that louder events are controlled without making the bed sound unnaturally uneven.
Keep the limiter last
OBS says a limiter prevents signal from exceeding its threshold, helping avoid clipping and distortion, and specifies that it should be the last filter in the chain. Its documented defaults are a -6.00 dB threshold and 60 ms release. Those defaults are not a sleep-stream loudness recommendation: set the cap for your intended output and verify the result by listening to the loudest passages.

Build and test the chain before going live
- In OBS, identify the audio source or device carrying the sleep sounds. Open that source’s filters and add processing only where the problem exists.
- Start with the source unprocessed. Add noise suppression only if mild unwanted noise is audible; compare wanted ambience before and after.
- Add a gate or expander only if reducing low-level signal is appropriate. Listen through the quietest passages and check for clipped tails, missing details, or abrupt changes.
- Add a compressor near the start only if the source has loud excursions. Check the loudest passages as well as the average bed.
- If peak control is needed, put the limiter last. Listen for clipping or distortion and confirm that the limiter is not being mistaken for a full loudness setting.
- Test the scene and stream before launch. OBS recommends testing stream operation, but its cited overview gives no 24-hour endurance procedure or uptime guarantee.
Common problems and fixes
- Quiet ambience vanishes: A gate or expander may be reducing wanted low-level sound. Disable it or revise its threshold and listen again to the quietest passages.
- The sound becomes unnatural after suppression: Suppression may be affecting wanted content. Reduce or remove it; OBS warns that stronger Speex suppression can distort other sounds.
- Peaks still sound distorted: Confirm that the limiter is last and check the loudest section. A limiter’s threshold caps peaks but does not by itself establish the right overall loudness.
- The chain adds processing without an audible benefit: Remove filters that do not solve a real source problem. OBS does not prescribe a complete sleep-sounds chain.
- You need assurance of uninterrupted 24/7 operation: Audio filters shape audio; OBS’s cited guidance does not claim they prevent stream interruptions or guarantee continuous operation.
