For quiet whisper ASMR, start with clean microphone audio, add only enough noise suppression to reduce mild steady noise, use an expander gently between phrases, control louder peaks with a compressor, and place a limiter last. There is no OBS-published whisper-ASMR preset or YouTube loudness target: tune by listening to your own voice and room, then test before relying on a continuous stream.
Build a conservative filter chain
OBS documents what each filter does and gives general settings guidance, but not one mandatory chain for every voice or room. For whisper ASMR, treat the order below as a starting workflow; add filters only when they solve an audible problem.
- Improve the microphone signal at its source. Set the microphone’s input level first where possible. OBS says gain should generally be applied before audio reaches OBS; use an OBS Gain filter if the source still needs a boost. OBS Gain Filter documentation.
- Add Noise Suppression only if mild, steady noise is audible. This can help with background or white noise such as a PC fan. Start gently and listen for unnatural or distorted speech. OBS Noise Suppression Filter documentation.
- Use an expander to lower room noise between phrases. Set it so quiet words and the beginnings of whispers still open naturally. OBS gives RMS detection as its recommendation for smoother threshold behavior; an overly aggressive threshold can cut off speech. OBS Expander Filter documentation.
- Use a compressor to manage louder vocal peaks. OBS says a compressor is typically placed at or near the beginning of the chain. It can reduce the level of loud sounds, but its default controls are not a whisper-ASMR recipe. OBS Compressor Filter documentation.
- Put a limiter last. OBS says a limiter should be the last filter in the chain and prevents the signal from peaking above its threshold. Its documented default threshold is −6 dB; that is a filter default, not a recommended YouTube or ASMR loudness target. OBS Limiter Filter documentation.
The broad placement guidance is compressor near the beginning, expander after compression or other effects, and limiter last. Noise suppression is optional: introduce it only if noise warrants it. Filter order can vary with the problem you are solving.
Choose filters by the problem you hear

Tune the filters without losing the whisper
- Make one adjustment at a time so you can tell which filter caused a change.
- Listen to both the spoken parts and the quiet between phrases. Check that the first syllable of a whisper remains audible, consonants sound natural, and small changes in voice level do not cause obvious pumping.
- Record a sample or test the setup privately before starting a continuous live session. OBS’s Studio Overview Guide recommends testing stream operation and configuration before the first stream.
Do not treat a compressor or expander default—or the limiter’s −6 dB default threshold—as an ideal loudness target. The documented values describe filter controls, not a cross-platform loudness recommendation.
Troubleshoot common whisper-stream problems
- First syllables disappear: the expander threshold may be too aggressive. Lower it and listen again to the starts of quiet words.
- Speech sounds distorted or watery: reduce or disable Noise Suppression. OBS cautions that stronger suppression can distort speech, especially when the room is loud.
- Room noise remains loud between phrases: if it is mild and steady, try suppression; an expander can also reduce low-level audio below its threshold. A loud room is not a problem Noise Suppression is generally effective at solving.
- Peaks become harsh or clip: use the compressor to reduce louder peaks and keep the limiter last. A limiter caps peaks at its threshold, but it does not set overall loudness.
- Noise is cut off too abruptly: consider an expander rather than a fixed-ratio gate, and tune the threshold and timing while checking that quiet speech still opens naturally.
- The signal is too quiet throughout: raise the microphone level at the source where possible; if it remains low, use Gain in OBS.
