For a continuous yoga music stream without live conversation, choose Normal latency in YouTube Studio. YouTube describes it as the best fit for non-interactive streams: it gives viewers the least buffering, while the shorter delays of Low and Ultra-low latency offer little benefit when you are not responding in real time.
Choose the right latency setting
Latency is the time between the stream being captured and viewers seeing or hearing it. The player’s read-ahead buffer contributes to that delay. Reducing the buffer can make a conversation feel more immediate, but it leaves less tolerance for delivery problems. YouTube warns that lower latency can increase buffering, and network congestion can cause delays even when your connection can sustain the stream’s average bitrate. YouTube Help explains the latency tradeoff.
| Setting | Intended use | Typical viewer delay | Tradeoff and resolution support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Non-interactive streams, such as background yoga music | No numerical promise stated in YouTube’s guidance | Lowest viewer buffering; supports all resolutions and live features |
| Low | Limited interaction, such as polls | Most viewers experience under 10 seconds | More buffering risk than Normal; 4K is unsupported |
| Ultra-low | Real-time conversation | Most viewers experience under five seconds | Greater buffering risk; 4K is unsupported |
The delay figures are YouTube’s descriptions for most viewers, not guarantees for every viewer or a promise of a particular end-to-end delay for a yoga broadcast. YouTube’s guidance puts it simply: “If you don’t interact with your audience, higher latency is not a problem.” YouTube Help.
When to reconsider Normal
If the broadcast includes live instruction, requests, or active chat responses, consider Low for limited interaction or Ultra-low for real-time conversation. Be prepared to accept more buffering risk with either lower-latency option. Neither Low nor Ultra-low supports 4K.

Change latency in YouTube Studio
The manual latency control applies to encoder-based broadcasts. YouTube says webcam and mobile broadcasts are set up for interactivity and do not expose a manual latency selection. See YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
- Enter the stream details, then choose Stream or Manage from the left menu.
- Open Stream settings.
- Under Stream latency, select Normal for non-interactive yoga music, or choose a lower-latency option if live interaction is important.
Set up and test the encoder separately
Latency is only one part of a stable broadcast. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends CBR bitrate encoding, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), AAC or MP3 audio, and 44.1 kHz stereo audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Check YouTube’s official encoder settings for the bitrate appropriate to your chosen resolution; the recommended bitrate depends on resolution.

- Test before going live with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. For a music broadcast, check the real audio chain and visual scene rather than assuming a stable upload alone ensures smooth playback.
- While live, monitor stream health and its messages in YouTube Studio and respond to any warnings.
- Keep latency expectations separate from stream health: choosing Normal does not replace testing the encoder, audio, video, or connection.
Know the limits of DVR on a continuous broadcast
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind a live broadcast, then resume from where they paused; they cannot seek to a point before the stream began. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable when a stream exceeds 12 hours. Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older app versions can have lower limits, so do not promise viewers unlimited rewind on a long-running stream. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams.
To change DVR, open the stream dashboard and go to Stream settings > Additional settings. YouTube says DVR can be turned on or off while live, but a change applies only to viewers who start playback after the change. If you turn DVR off, viewers cannot seek back during the live broadcast; YouTube says they can still watch the recording after it becomes available. Check YouTube’s DVR guidance.
