Which OBS option should you use?

OBS describes VLC Video as supporting a playlist: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” The feature is part of OBS’s VLC Video source, which depends on VLC, rather than a separate third-party OBS playlist plugin. OBS Project documentation also lists audio-track, subtitle, visibility, and network-caching controls for the source.
Set up a looping video or playlist
- Install VLC if you plan to use a playlist. VLC Video will not be available without VLC Media Player. Match the architectures: OBS’s documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the appropriate source. In OBS, add a Media Source for one local file, or a VLC Video source for multiple files.
- Choose the media. In the source properties, select the single video for Media Source. For VLC Video, add the local media files to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Turn on the loop control. For Media Source, select Loop. For VLC Video, select Loop Playlist to repeat the list.
- Choose shuffle and hidden-source behavior. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want the list played in randomized order. Set VLC Video’s visibility behavior to stop and restart, pause and resume, or always play according to what should happen when the source’s scene is hidden.
- Check the scene before going live. Confirm the file order, audio, and visibility behavior in your own OBS setup so the source behaves as intended in the broadcast.
Settings and distinctions that matter
Visibility behavior
A source may be hidden when you switch scenes. VLC Video offers settings for what happens then: stop and restart, pause and resume, or always play. Choose deliberately. For example, a source set to always play can continue advancing through a playlist while its scene is not visible.
Audio, subtitles, and network caching
VLC Video exposes audio-track and subtitle controls. OBS documents network caching with a default of 400 ms; the documentation does not establish that changing it will fix every playback problem, so treat it as a setting to adjust only for a specific need rather than a universal remedy.

OBS playback is not YouTube’s viewer-side loop
YouTube’s loop control repeats a video or playlist for someone watching YouTube. It does not configure local media playback in OBS for a YouTube Live broadcast. Set up the loop in the OBS source that feeds your stream.
