For a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source with VLC installed. Consider Advanced Scene Switcher only when you need scheduled or conditional OBS actions. In every case, YouTube’s encoder settings and stream-health checks still matter.
Choose a playback method for your content
| What you want to play | OBS option | What it does | Dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| One local video repeated | Media Source | Plays supported local video and audio files; enable Loop to repeat the file when playback ends. | No additional plugin is required. |
| Several videos in sequence or randomized order | VLC Video source | Supports a media playlist, Loop Playlist, and Shuffle Playlist. | Install VLC. Match its bitness to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| Scheduled or conditional OBS actions | Advanced Scene Switcher | Runs configured macros when conditions are met. Its available conditions and actions include date/time, media, and streaming; the Macro Schedule tab can arrange macro execution for a given date and time. | Check the plugin’s OBS version requirement and platform compatibility before installing. |
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the built-in source options. For a single repeating file, start there rather than installing a plugin you do not need.
How to loop one video with OBS
- Add the source: In OBS, select the scene where the video should appear. In the Sources box, click + and choose Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
- Select the file: In the source properties, enable Local File if it is not already selected, then browse to the video on the computer running OBS.
- Enable repetition: Check Loop in the Media Source properties. The file should start over after it reaches the end.
- Confirm playback and framing: Start playback in the OBS preview. Make sure the video is visible and fits the canvas as intended; check the audio meters if the file has sound.
- Test a complete transition: For a short sample, confirm it restarts at the end. For a long file, verify playback and audio before going live rather than assuming the source path and format will work unattended.
The loop controls playback inside OBS; it does not itself start a YouTube broadcast, keep the computer powered, or confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
How to repeat or shuffle a playlist
- Install VLC: Install the VLC build with the same bitness as OBS. OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC source: In the scene’s Sources box, click + and select VLC Video.
- Build the list: In the source properties, add the media files you want to play and arrange them in the intended order.
- Set playlist behavior: Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the list. Enable Shuffle Playlist if you want randomized playback rather than the listed sequence.
- Preflight the source: Play through enough of the list to confirm the expected order, picture, and sound before starting the YouTube stream.
For details on OBS source behavior, see the OBS Media Sources guide.

When Advanced Scene Switcher is useful
Advanced Scene Switcher is an optional automation plugin, not a playback requirement. It is relevant when an OBS workflow needs actions triggered by a schedule or by configured conditions—for example, changing scenes or responding to a media or streaming condition. A scheduled macro can automate OBS tasks, but it is not a guarantee that a stream will remain online without interruption.
The OBS Forums listing shows Advanced Scene Switcher version 1.36.1, updated August 7, 2026, and states a minimum OBS Studio version of 31.1.1. Those values describe the listing at that date; check the current plugin listing and its updates against your installed OBS build before installing. Back up your OBS settings and verify compatibility, especially before relying on macros for a long-running broadcast.

Configure OBS for YouTube Live
Source choice does not change the encoder requirements. YouTube’s current encoder guide recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. It lists supported codecs and frame rates up to 60 fps. Set resolution and bitrate according to YouTube’s table and the upload capacity of the connection used for the broadcast.
- Set up the live stream: In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and configure OBS to send to YouTube using the stream key for that broadcast. Treat the key as a credential: do not expose it in a recording, screenshot, or public post.
- Use the recommended transport and rate control: Configure RTMPS and CBR in OBS’s streaming output settings.
- Set keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval, and do not set it above four seconds.
- Choose resolution and bitrate together: Use the bitrate range in YouTube’s encoder settings table for the chosen resolution and frame rate. Leave connection headroom rather than setting the stream at the full measured upload speed.
- Test representative content: Start an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test stream and check the actual picture, motion, audio, and YouTube stream-health indicators. A static test image may not reveal problems that appear in fast motion or complex audio.
- Monitor the live session: Watch YouTube’s stream health after going live. Correct encoder or network problems when they appear; a looping source and a scheduled macro do not replace monitoring.
Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide for the applicable codec and bitrate table. Its encoder setup instructions cover creating a stream with an encoder. For prerecorded programming, also confirm you have rights to all video and audio and that the content complies with YouTube’s policies; a successful technical setup does not grant permission to rebroadcast material.

Keeping the channel live: local OBS or a cloud service
With OBS, the source and encoder run on the computer that is sending the broadcast. The computer must remain available, and its power, network connection, OBS session, and stream health are operational concerns. A plugin can automate OBS actions, but the cited plugin information does not establish comparative uptime or guarantee unattended recovery.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide includes a cloud-based category for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. If you prefer not to leave a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or create a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer can be off. It is #1 here for this use case because it runs always-on from the cloud, streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

- The video does not appear: Check that the file path still exists on the OBS computer, the source is enabled, and the media format is supported. Reopen the source properties and select the file again if it was moved.
- The video ends instead of repeating: Open Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a list, check Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source.
- VLC Video is missing or fails to load media: Confirm VLC is installed and its bitness matches OBS. OBS requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
- The playlist plays in the wrong pattern: Check the VLC playlist order and whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled. Disable shuffle for a fixed sequence.
- The plugin will not install or work: Check the installed OBS version against the Advanced Scene Switcher listing’s minimum version, then confirm the plugin release supports your platform and build. Do not assume a scheduled action will keep a disconnected stream online.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Compare OBS’s output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s settings guidance. Check the connection and test with representative moving video and audio; reduce the bitrate or output demands if the available upload capacity is insufficient.
- The broadcast stops when you leave: OBS is running locally, so the computer, OBS process, power, and connection must stay available for that method. If you do not want a home computer running continuously, a cloud service is an alternative operating model.
