The command below is a video-only test starting point, not a complete production pipeline; confirm the installed elements, add audio if needed, and verify stream health in YouTube before relying on it.
What you need before starting
- An Ubuntu VPS with enough sustained outbound capacity and CPU for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. A VPS is not itself a camera or capture device: make sure your source is available to the process.
- GStreamer and the plugin elements required by your pipeline. Package builds vary, so verify element availability on your selected Ubuntu image.
- A YouTube live stream and its current RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS; it encrypts the stream through Google’s servers. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes its current streaming recommendations.
Do not use an old copied ingest URL when YouTube provides a current one for your stream. The key grants the ability to stream to your channel; keep it out of public scripts, logs, and source control, and rotate it if exposed.
Install GStreamer and verify the elements
On Ubuntu/Debian, the GStreamer installation guide lists these package families: gstreamer1.0-tools, gstreamer1.0-plugins-base, gstreamer1.0-plugins-good, gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad, gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly, and gstreamer1.0-libav. rtmpsink is documented in Bad Plug-ins; x264enc is in Ugly Plug-ins. Install the packages you need for your chosen source and codecs, then check the selected image rather than assuming every element is present:

gst-inspect-1.0 flvmuxIf an inspection command cannot find an element, install the plugin family that provides it and check again. The documented RTMP sink uses librtmp and accepts URLs supported by that library. Confirm that your installed build supports the YouTube RTMPS endpoint before treating it as an operational setup; the availability and behavior of alternatives such as rtmp2sink depend on the selected release and build. Build a video-only test pipeline
This illustrative command sends a synthetic 720p30 test pattern, encoded as H.264, through an FLV muxer to an RTMP sink:

rtmpsink location="<RTMPS_URL_FROM_YOUTUBE>/<STREAM_KEY>"Replace the placeholders with the current RTMPS URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, and replace videotestsrc with an actual live source available on the VPS. This is a starting example, not a tested command or a complete audio-and-video production pipeline. Its encoder line does not set a bitrate; configure and validate the bitrate for your resolution, frame rate, CPU, and network.
Add audio for a normal live programme
The example has no audio branch. For a stream that needs sound, add a compatible AAC or MP3 source-and-encoder branch into flvmux. Confirm that the audio source and encoder are installed and available, and check that the resulting stream has audio in YouTube’s health feedback. The required source and exact elements depend on how audio is produced on your server.

Set encoder parameters for YouTube
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). The following H.264 bitrate values are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can sustain them. The Help page showed no publication year; it was checked on 2026-10-03.

Use the recommendation for your target output as a planning reference, then test actual sustained server egress and CPU with representative motion and audio. A provider’s advertised port speed or India-region label alone does not establish that the route to YouTube will hold steady. YouTube recommends an upload speed test and a test stream that resembles the real event.

Connect using YouTube’s current RTMPS details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and the stream’s settings.
- Reveal and copy the RTMPS URL and stream key provided for that stream. YouTube’s API identifies
rtmpsIngestionAddressas the primary RTMPS ingestion URL and permits the stream URL and name to be supplied separately or concatenated asSTREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. See the Live Streams API documentation. - Put the URL and key into the sink configuration in a protected way. Avoid echoing the key into shared logs or leaving it in a public script.
- Start the pipeline and confirm that YouTube receives data and reports a healthy stream. A pipeline that starts locally is not proof that the public broadcast is healthy.
YouTube’s RTMPS requirements specify the rtmps protocol, a valid YouTube ingestion host and application path, and port 443. Use the URL issued in Live Control Room rather than reconstructing the host or path. See the RTMPS ingestion guide.
Test, monitor, and troubleshoot
Run a test before the event using movement and audio similar to the intended stream. Watch both GStreamer’s local output and YouTube’s stream health and messages. YouTube’s Live API can report stream status and health, including configuration issues such as low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, or audio problems. See the Live Streams API documentation.

Choosing an Ubuntu VPS region in India
No particular Indian VPS city or provider can be identified as universally best from the available platform guidance. Compare current India-region availability, measured route to the YouTube endpoint, sustained outbound throughput and any egress limits or charges, CPU capacity, restart behavior, and support. Test the actual route from the server you intend to use; geography by itself does not prove latency or stream reliability.
