For a reliable YouTube stream from OBS, start with H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, RTMPS, and AAC stereo audio. YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps or 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps; those are platform recommendations, not a promise that every Indian connection can sustain them. Test your actual upload connection and content before going live. For a truly continuous channel, also account for YouTube’s archive limit: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Recommended OBS settings for YouTube Live
These starting points follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. The bitrate recommendations are for H.264; the suitable choice depends on sustained upload capacity, motion and encoder performance.
| Setting | Starting point | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Service and protocol | YouTube over RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. |
| Video encoder | H.264 | A broadly compatible baseline. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1; use them only if your encoder supports the codec and workflow. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use constant bitrate for the live encoder. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps published minimum | A practical target when the connection and encoder can sustain it. |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps published minimum | Higher frame rate needs substantially more bitrate than 1080p30. |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps published minimum | A lower-bandwidth option to test if 1080p is unstable. |
| Audio | AAC, stereo, 128 Kbps | YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo. |
| Color for SDR | Rec. 709, 8-bit | Use SDR settings unless your production intentionally uses a supported HDR workflow. |
These figures are not India-specific: YouTube’s published settings are based on codec, resolution and frame rate, not country. Actual performance depends on sustained upload speed, network congestion, the route to YouTube ingest, other household or office traffic, and encoder capacity. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions before configuring a stream because its guidance can change.
Choose resolution and bitrate for your connection
When to use 1080p30
Use 1080p30 at YouTube’s recommended 10 Mbps as a starting target if your upload connection and encoder can hold it consistently. Do not treat the published 5 Mbps minimum as a guarantee of good results on every network.

When to use 720p30
If your connection cannot reliably maintain the 1080p target, test 720p30 at the recommended 6 Mbps. Reducing resolution or frame rate can be a better tradeoff than keeping a higher-quality setting that repeatedly drops frames.
When 60 fps makes sense
Fast gameplay and motion can benefit from 60 fps, but YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate rises to 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Static scenes, talk shows and ambient streams often have less to gain from 60 fps, so 30 fps may be a more practical reliability choice. This is a settings decision based on YouTube’s published bitrate table, not a tested result for any particular computer or Indian ISP.

YouTube transcodes a live feed into viewer formats, so the ingest resolution and bitrate you send are not necessarily the only playback rendition viewers can select.
Set up a 24/7 stream in OBS and YouTube
- Check channel eligibility. Confirm that the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Choose your target. Decide on resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s current encoder settings table and your measured, sustained upload performance.
- Configure OBS output. Set H.264, CBR, the bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Set audio to AAC stereo at 128 Kbps. Use Rec. 709, 8-bit for SDR.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s stream configuration. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Use RTMPS where available.
- Test the real content privately or unlisted. Include representative motion and audio, not just a static screen. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Review the Live Control Room preview and health messages.
- Check OBS statistics and recording. Watch for dropped frames and confirm that any local recording is actually being written and can serve as a backup archive.
- Go live and monitor. Keep an eye on stream health and audio/video quality. If you configured a backup encoder, test the handover before relying on it; YouTube’s operational guidance describes stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable to test backup rollover.
For a recurring playlist or pre-recorded content, make sure you have the necessary rights to stream every video and audio track. YouTube’s copyright rules still apply to live streams. A stream that is permitted to run technically is not automatically cleared to use copyrighted material or eligible for monetization; review YouTube’s copyright guidance and channel monetization policies, including reused-content rules.

Make the connection more dependable in India
Test on the exact internet connection and at the time of day you expect to stream. A speed-test result is only a snapshot; congestion, other users on the network and the route to YouTube ingest can affect a long session. Prefer wired Ethernet where practical. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming.
OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting heuristic for connection limits. It is not a YouTube requirement, nor does it guarantee that a connection will stay stable. Leave headroom for fluctuations and other network use, then judge by a representative test and the stream’s health indicators. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide explains dropped frames and connection checks.

What 24/7 streaming means for YouTube archives
A continuous broadcast is not the same as a guaranteed replay archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving a replay matters, record locally and verify the file is growing; plan session lengths with that limit in mind. YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance describes the limitation.
Even correctly configured OBS settings cannot guarantee uninterrupted operation: network faults, encoder issues or a YouTube-side disconnect can interrupt a stream. Monitoring and a tested backup approach can help, but do not assume failover works until you have tested it.

Troubleshoot common OBS live-stream problems
Dropped frames or an unstable stream
- Likely cause: The connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate.
- Try: Reduce the bitrate, test again, and use wired Ethernet if practical. Check the cable, router, network card and other network devices as possible fault points.
- Then: If drops continue, lower resolution or frame rate and repeat the test. OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment may reduce quality and should not replace fixing the underlying connection problem.
The stream looks poor despite a high resolution
- Likely cause: The chosen bitrate is too low for the resolution, frame rate or amount of motion, or the connection cannot sustain the intended setting.
- Try: Check the matching YouTube recommendation, reduce frame rate or resolution if needed, and test with motion similar to the real stream.
Viewers report missing or unusable replay
- Likely cause: The session exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold or the local recording was not successfully written.
- Try: Verify local recording during the stream and check the completed file. Do not rely on YouTube to capture a session longer than 12 hours.
Backup encoder does not take over
- Likely cause: Failover was not configured correctly or its behavior was never validated.
- Try: Test the handover deliberately before depending on it, following YouTube’s operational instructions for stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable.
