You can use a spare PC and OBS Studio to keep a YouTube stream running, but the setup is only as dependable as the computer, encoder, video source and internet connection. Create a YouTube live stream, connect OBS with the stream URL and key, choose settings your PC and upload connection can sustain, then test and monitor the broadcast. For a stream that should continue while your computer is off, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is an alternative.
Before you start: check your channel and PC
Make sure YouTube Live is available
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so check this before the day you plan to broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance and live-streaming tips.
Test the actual spare PC
There is no universal minimum CPU, GPU or memory specification established for every nonstop stream. The load depends on the video source, output resolution and frame rate, and encoder settings. Run OBS with the scene and settings you intend to use; confirm it can encode steadily and that the PC does not overheat, sleep or shut down. A spare PC still depends on its power, cooling, operating system and network remaining available.
Install OBS Studio from the OBS Project. Keep the video files accessible to the account running OBS, and disable sleep or automatic shutdown for the period you intend to stream. These steps reduce avoidable interruptions but do not guarantee continuous operation.

Create a YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio. Go to YouTube Studio, choose the live-streaming option to open Live Control Room, and create or manage a stream. Follow the on-screen flow for the broadcast type you need.
- Copy the stream URL and key. YouTube provides these connection details for the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, show it in a recording or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Configure OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube if available, and connect your account or choose the option to use a stream key. If entering details manually, use YouTube’s stream URL and key. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide covers common connection problems.
- Build the scene. Add the intended video or other permitted source to the scene and make sure its audio is routed correctly. For a playlist or long recording, check that playback continues at the end rather than leaving a blank scene. Preview it in OBS before sending it to YouTube.
- Set the stream behavior in Live Control Room. Review auto-start and auto-stop settings so YouTube’s response to OBS starting or stopping matches your workflow. For a non-interactive ambient or loop stream, normal latency is a reasonable default. Lower latency can increase playback buffering and is more useful when you are interacting with viewers. YouTube’s stream settings guidance explains these controls.
Choose output settings your setup can sustain
YouTube’s encoder recommendations vary with codec, resolution and frame rate. They are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular spare PC or connection can maintain them. Start with a mode your hardware and stable upload capacity can handle, then test. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport; it lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the full, current recommendations.

The following are YouTube’s published H.264 ingest recommendations, current guidance accessed in 2026. “Minimum” is not a promise of stable playback or encoding; test the chosen setting with your actual scene and connection.

These figures are for H.264; do not assume they directly apply to another codec. Leave headroom for other devices and traffic using the connection, and prefer a stable output over a higher resolution or frame rate that produces dropped frames. In OBS, set the output mode to constant bitrate (CBR), choose the relevant resolution and frame rate, and use a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder exposes that setting.
Test before relying on the broadcast
- Start a representative test with the same video, audio and movement you plan to use. YouTube recommends testing before going live.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for picture, sound and the correct stream destination before making the broadcast public.
- After going live, watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s stats. Look for dropped frames, disconnects, muted or clipped audio, frozen video and unexpected scene changes.
- Let the stream run long enough to check the behavior at the end of a video or playlist and confirm the PC stays awake and stable.
A single successful short test cannot establish that a setup will run indefinitely. Continue to monitor a long broadcast, especially after changing encoder settings, video sources, network equipment or PC power settings.

Troubleshoot common interruptions
- OBS cannot connect: Check that the selected service, stream URL and current stream key are correct, and confirm that the stream is active in Live Control Room. If the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections: OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or the set bitrate cannot be sustained. Check YouTube stream health, verify available upload capacity, reduce bitrate or output load, and test again. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide.
- Video stutters while the network appears stable: Check OBS stats and whether the PC is struggling to encode or render the scene. Reduce output resolution, frame rate or scene complexity and test. A setting that works on a newer PC may not be sustainable on an older spare machine.
- Broadcast stops when the video ends: Check the source or playlist’s end behavior and the auto-stop setting in YouTube Live Control Room. Test the transition before using it for a long broadcast.
- PC goes offline or OBS closes: The stream cannot continue from that PC if it loses power, sleeps, loses its connection or the encoder exits. Review system sleep and restart behavior, power and network stability, and monitor the machine; a reconnect option cannot fix a power or hardware failure.
Copyright and channel-policy checks for game streams
Only stream gameplay, music, footage and other material you have permission to use. A game license does not necessarily grant rights to every soundtrack, cutscene or third-party element in a broadcast. Review the applicable game publisher terms and YouTube’s copyright and live-streaming policies before looping a recording. Replaying the same material continuously does not remove copyright obligations or guarantee monetization eligibility.
