For a lecture you need to record continuously, start with a recoverable recording format, an encoder your computer can sustain, enough storage for the full run, and a test that lasts long enough to expose problems. In OBS, a practical starting point is MKV recording, High Quality output, and a suitable hardware encoder; use OBS’s advanced encoder values as baselines, not a guarantee that a particular PC will run without interruption.

Recommended OBS setup for continuous lecture recording

These settings are starting points because the best configuration depends on your operating system, OBS version, CPU or GPU, source, resolution, frame rate, and how long you must keep the files. OBS recommends testing the complete setup before relying on it for a live run.

  1. Open Settings > Output. Set Output Mode to Simple if you want the simpler recording controls. Choose High Quality for a balance of quality and file size. Indistinguishable Quality produces higher quality and larger files, and can be harder on weaker hardware. Avoid Lossless for a long recording unless you have planned for exceptionally large files.
  2. Choose a recording format. Select MKV for safer recovery if OBS, the computer, or power stops unexpectedly. OBS describes MKV as flexible and compatible with every audio and video encoder OBS Studio supports. If your editor or upload workflow needs MP4, stop the recording and use OBS’s remux function to create an MP4 copy.
  3. Select an encoder. Use a suitable hardware encoder when one is available. Hardware encoding shifts work from the CPU to a dedicated GPU component; results and available options depend on the encoder generation and system. If you use x264, check that the CPU can sustain the chosen quality and frame rate.
  4. Set a recording path. In the recording settings, choose a drive with enough free space for the planned session and retention period. Monitor available space during long runs.
  5. Check Settings > Video. Choose an output resolution appropriate to the lecture and match the frame rate to what the content needs. Slides and a mostly static lecturer may be worth testing at 30 fps rather than 60 fps; 60 fps can place substantially more load on the system. This is a choice to validate with your material, not a universal OBS rule.
  6. Record a representative test. Include the actual lecture source, audio, scene changes, and intended duration as far as practical. Confirm that the recording plays, the audio is usable, the file grows as expected, and OBS does not report encoder or rendering strain.

OBS’s Standard Recording Output Guide explains recording configuration and the remux workflow. Interface labels and encoder choices can vary by OBS version, operating system, and hardware.

Advanced encoder values to try

If you choose Advanced Output Mode, OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide gives these baselines. They are not certified settings for every 24/7 lecture setup; test them on the computer and source you will use.

Encoder Starting values in OBS’s guide What to watch
NVENC CQP 16–23; keyframe interval 2; preset P5; High Quality tuning; two-pass quarter-resolution multipass; High profile; look-ahead off; adaptive quantization on; 2 B-frames Lower CQP values favor quality and increase file size. Verify encoder load and file growth over a sustained run.
x264 CRF 16–23; keyframe interval 2; veryfast preset; High profile Lower CRF values favor quality and increase file size. Check CPU load and whether encoding remains stable throughout the test.

Keep separate recording settings in mind when recording and streaming at once. OBS’s advanced output allows recording to be configured separately; choosing a different encoder or quality level from the stream can use additional computer resources. If the machine struggles, test recording with the same settings as the stream or reduce the workload, then verify the resulting lecture quality.

Choose recording quality, resolution, and frame rate around the lecture

Quality and file size

OBS’s Simple output presets trade image quality against storage and system demand: High Quality is described as high quality with a medium file size; Indistinguishable Quality raises quality and file size and may affect weaker hardware. Lossless is unsuitable for many continuous recordings because OBS’s preset guide says its Lossless preset uses the CPU encoder and produces around 7 GB per minute. That figure applies to that preset, not to other recording settings.

For a lecture, begin with High Quality and inspect a test recording at full size. If text is difficult to read, test a higher-quality setting or resolution while checking storage growth and encoder load. Do not assume that the highest setting is automatically the best: a recording that stops or fills the drive is not useful.

Resolution and frame rate

Set output resolution to the size you actually need for playback and archiving, and match frame rate to the material. Higher resolution preserves more detail but increases processing and storage requirements. OBS notes that 60 fps can be much more taxing than 30 fps. For slides, whiteboards, and a mostly stationary speaker, compare a 30 fps test with a 60 fps test and choose the lowest setting that keeps the lecture clear and smooth.

Estimate storage before you start

There is no universal drive capacity for a 24/7 recording: file size depends on bitrate or quality setting, resolution, frame rate, audio, and how long you retain recordings. OBS’s recording guide advises choosing a path and ensuring the drive has sufficient space.

  1. Record a representative sample using the settings you plan to keep.
  2. Note the file size or the file’s growth over a measured period.
  3. Multiply that rate by the total recording time and retention period you need.
  4. Leave additional free space for operating-system needs, temporary files, remuxed copies, and unexpected variation.
  5. Check free space during the run and have a plan for what happens when the recording drive fills.

Remuxing creates an additional file, so allow room for the MP4 copy if your workflow needs one. Do not use the Lossless preset’s around-7-GB-per-minute figure as an estimate for other presets.

Recording settings and streaming settings are different problems

A local recording can fail because of encoder load, disk space, or the recording workflow. A stream can instead drop frames because the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide explains that reducing bitrate may help when the connection cannot keep up, but it does not fix the underlying network cause. Check upload capacity and the route to the selected ingest server rather than treating dynamic bitrate as a complete repair.

When streaming and recording together, test both outputs at once. A stable local recording does not prove the stream connection is stable, and a stable stream does not prove the recording drive has room for the full session.

Troubleshoot a long OBS lecture recording

  • The recording is unreadable after a crash or power loss: Use MKV for future recordings. After a successful stop, remux to MP4 only if the editing or upload workflow requires it.
  • The computer is overloaded or frames appear uneven: Test a hardware encoder if suitable for your system, reduce resolution or frame rate, or lower recording quality. Change one setting at a time and check a representative recording. OBS notes that hardware encoder performance and quality vary by generation.
  • The file is growing too quickly: Use a less demanding quality setting, resolution, or frame rate, and recalculate capacity from a fresh sample. Do not infer ordinary file sizes from the Lossless preset estimate.
  • The drive fills before the session ends: Stop safely if possible, free or change storage before the next run, and revisit the sample-based capacity estimate. MKV helps with interruption recovery but does not prevent storage exhaustion.
  • The stream drops frames while local recording continues: Investigate upload capacity, bitrate, and the connection to the ingest server. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote server or an inability to keep up with the set bitrate; lowering bitrate can reduce pressure but may reduce quality.
  • The lecture looks too soft or text is hard to read: Test a higher output resolution or quality preset with the real slides and display size, then make sure the system and storage can sustain it.
  • The editor will not open the recording: Keep the original MKV and use OBS remuxing to create an MP4 copy. Compatibility depends on the codecs and the editor’s support.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing a prerecorded lecture, rather than a local archive made by OBS, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it does not stream a camera feed.

Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, playlists and 24/7 looping, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free day.
