Marathon’s extraction mode is not being replaced by the planned PvE launch. Game director Del Chafe III said on September 30, 2026, that extraction remains “a major part” of the game and will continue to receive updates. Bungie’s roadmap describes a broader mix of PvE, PvP and PvEvP experiences—but does not promise extraction will remain the dominant mode or specify its update schedule.
What the director said about Marathon extraction
In a September 30, 2026, post from the Marathon Development Team, game director Del Chafe III said: “We want to be clear, Extraction is still a major part of Marathon, and we’re also going to continue updating it as we look to the future of the game.” GamingBolt reproduced the statement on October 2.
That is a clear statement of continuity: extraction is staying, and Bungie intends to keep updating it. “Major part” does not establish that extraction will have equal resources with every other mode, retain top priority, or remain unchanged. Chafe’s statement also gives no feature list or update cadence.
What Bungie plans to add
Bungie’s September 24 roadmap presents Marathon’s future as a connected set of PvE, PvP and PvEvP survival experiences, rather than a single mode replacing another. The company says PvEvP will remain important within that mix. Its roadmap sets out these planned updates:

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Planned timing | Update | What Bungie has announced |
|---|---|---|
| Early October | Nightfall Refresh | A roadmap milestone; further details are in Bungie’s roadmap. |
| December | Symbiosis | Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience, alongside an expanded Perimeter, a new shell named Bishop, improved onboarding, a social space with a firing range, and experimental Team Deathmatch. |
| March | Larger evolution | Bungie says this is intended to connect the experiences and add deeper progression, more narrative, new enemies and a new zone. |
These are planned milestones, not confirmation that the features have shipped. Bungie says it is moving away from strict seasonal releases and will pace updates according to the work involved, its size and what the team can support. It also said it was still finalizing parts of the December PvE experience and would share a deeper look before launch. The roadmap does not establish that mode’s rules, player count, difficulty or exact relationship to extraction.
How the announced experiences differ
The roadmap describes a range of formats, not a detailed mechanical breakdown of every mode. Its distinctions so far are:

- PvE: Cooperative play against enemies rather than other Runners; Bungie plans to make the December experience permanent.
- PvP: Competitive play against other players. Bungie includes it in the intended mix of experiences.
- PvEvP: The extraction-style environment in which players face both enemies and other Runners. Bungie says this remains an important part of Marathon.
- Team Deathmatch: An experimental Symbiosis mode. Bungie describes it as lower commitment and says it will not risk a full run.
Bungie’s roadmap calls the direction “a connected set of survival experiences,” but does not yet spell out how progression, narrative or other systems will connect the modes in practice.

In a September 17 leadership update, Bungie said Marathon “did not reach as many players as we had hoped” and that the game “needs to evolve.” The company described cooperative PvE, competitive PvP and PvPvE as experiences it wants to offer. That is Bungie’s explanation for its direction, not independent player-count or performance data. Read the leadership update.
