Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a standard SDR product demonstration, start with OBS using H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo audio, and a resolution and frame rate your measured upload can sustain. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30; treat these as platform recommendations, not universal guarantees. Test product labels, closeups, movement, lighting, overlays, and audio in YouTube’s preview before leaving a stream running continuously.
Recommended OBS settings for YouTube Live
These settings target a conventional SDR stream over YouTube’s standard RTMP/RTMPS ingest. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for standard streaming. OBS labels can vary by version and platform, so use the equivalent setting if a label differs.
| Setting | Starting point | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Service/server | YouTube; RTMPS where available | RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure ingest protocol. |
| Video encoder | H.264 | A straightforward baseline for an ordinary SDR setup. |
| Rate control | CBR | Matches YouTube’s current ingest recommendations. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Resolution and frame rate | Choose for product legibility and motion; use the matching bitrate recommendation below | More pixels or frames are not automatically better if upload capacity or scene readability suffers. |
| Audio codec | AAC stereo | YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; its stereo recommendation is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. |
| Color | Rec. 709, 8-bit for SDR | HDR is a separate workflow requiring compatible hardware and configuration. |
| Latency | Normal, unless real-time interaction is needed | YouTube notes lower latency can increase playback buffering; it matters less when you are not interacting with viewers. |
Choose resolution and bitrate for the actual demo
For H.264, YouTube’s published recommendations include these common combinations. The listed minimums are not a guarantee of acceptable quality; use the recommended value only if your measured connection can sustain it with headroom.
| Output | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Use YouTube’s bitrate table for other resolution and frame-rate combinations rather than extrapolating from these examples. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 ingest, but codec support depends on the encoder and stream-key configuration; do not switch to HDR or another codec without verifying compatibility.

Make the product easy to see
Pick the lowest output resolution that keeps product names, labels, packaging details, and on-screen text legible at the expected viewing size. Use 30 fps for a largely static display or slow demonstration when that is sufficient; consider 60 fps when camera movement or object motion needs to look clearer. A higher frame rate consumes more bitrate and is not automatically an improvement for a stationary product shot.
Measure upload capacity, not download speed
Test outbound bandwidth on the network the stream will actually use. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Leave additional capacity for other office or household traffic and any backup stream. On a shared connection, OBS may have less available bandwidth than the provider’s headline speed suggests.

Use the selected resolution and frame rate with representative motion and lighting. If YouTube reports poor stream health or OBS shows network-related dropped frames, reduce the bitrate or resolve the network bottleneck before increasing quality. OBS documents dynamic bitrate as a beta measure that can lower bitrate during congestion; it may reduce quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem.
Choose an encoder your computer can sustain
OBS explains that hardware encoding can move work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. Modern hardware encoders can deliver good quality with low performance impact, while older generations may give lower quality at the same bitrate. Choose an encoder supported by your installed system and assess it with the full scene running—camera sources, screen capture, browser elements, overlays, and any filters included.

Do not assume a particular GPU model is necessary based on bitrate alone. Watch OBS’s rendering and encoding status during a representative test; if the workstation struggles, simplify the scene, lower output demands, or compare a supported hardware encoder with software encoding under the same conditions.
Set up and test the YouTube stream
- Prepare the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, open the live control room and create or select the event. Copy its stream key into OBS’s YouTube streaming configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it.
- Configure OBS output. Set H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and the bitrate that corresponds to the chosen resolution and frame rate. Set stereo audio to AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz where those controls are exposed.
- Match video output to the scene. Set the canvas and scaled output so the product and any text remain readable. Use Rec. 709 and 8-bit for SDR. Set frame rate to the selected 30 or 60 fps mode rather than choosing the highest option by default.
- Run a realistic preflight. Start OBS and check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Include speech, product handling, motion, closeups, and overlays similar to the planned demonstration. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Confirm the viewer experience. Verify that the stream is visible and that labels and spoken explanations are clear on a viewer device. Set up in advance; YouTube recommends starting the encoder before the event. If you have a backup encoder, test failover instead of assuming it will work.
What 24/7 operation adds beyond OBS settings
A bitrate or keyframe interval cannot guarantee an uninterrupted day-long broadcast. OBS’s connection guidance covers dropped frames and network causes, but settings alone do not provide recovery from OBS or operating-system failure, power loss, an ISP outage, or a YouTube ingest interruption. Continuous operation requires an operating plan for monitoring, recovery, power and network resilience, and testing. YouTube also transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers; that does not remove the need for a stable feed into YouTube.

Keep the content eligible and rights-cleared
Before scheduling a continuous demonstration, make sure you have the rights to every video, music track, image, and other material in the stream. Replaying prerecorded material does not itself establish that it complies with YouTube’s copyright or monetization rules. Review the applicable YouTube policies for the content and channel, and avoid assuming that a technically healthy stream is automatically policy-compliant.

Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Network-related dropped frames or poor stream health | Upload congestion, shared network use, or insufficient headroom | Measure upload on the streaming connection, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, reduce bitrate if needed, and investigate competing traffic or network faults. |
| Product detail or labels are hard to read | Output resolution, framing, text size, or scaling | Reframe the product, enlarge on-screen text, or raise resolution only if the upload supports its corresponding bitrate. |
| Fast movement looks unclear | Frame rate or motion in the scene | Test 60 fps and its matching YouTube bitrate recommendation if the network and encoder can sustain it; otherwise reduce movement or return to a stable 30 fps presentation. |
| Voice is unclear or handling noise dominates | Audio capture, mic placement, or scene noise | Test spoken audio and product handling during preflight; adjust capture and placement so speech remains intelligible. |
| Stream stops after an interruption | OBS, operating system, power, network, or YouTube ingest recovery | Do not expect a bitrate setting to restart a failed setup. Define monitoring and restart procedures, test backup/failover arrangements, and plan for power and network interruptions. |
