For a typical lecture with slides and speech, start with 1080p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR at 14 Mbps, a 2-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, and RTMPS. In OBS, loop a single lecture with a Media Source or loop a playlist with VLC Video. These are starting settings, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming: test the full setup, choose a bitrate your connection can sustain, and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
Set up the lecture to repeat
Loop one lecture file
- In OBS, add a Media Source to your scene and select the local lecture file.
- Enable Loop in the source properties. OBS documents common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. See OBS Media Sources.
- Check the preview and watch the Audio Mixer meters while the lecture plays. Confirm that speech is audible and the picture is framed correctly.
Loop several lectures
- Install VLC, then add a VLC Video source in OBS and add the lecture files to its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist and verify that the playlist advances and returns to the beginning as expected. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
A Media Source can be set to restart when it becomes active. In a continuous scene, avoid unnecessary scene switching: if a source becomes hidden or inactive, its playback behavior depends on its source settings.
Choose resolution and frame rate
For lecture content dominated by slides and speech, 1920×1080 at 30 fps is a practical starting point. In OBS, set Output (Scaled) Resolution to the size you intend to send to YouTube. Use the source’s actual resolution where practical; scaling up a lower-resolution file does not add detail. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps, so use 60 only when the source benefits from it and the machine can sustain it. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers.
For mostly static slides, 30 fps is an efficiency-oriented choice, not a YouTube requirement. If the lecture is 720p or the computer or network struggles at 1080p, stream at 1280×720 and adjust the bitrate accordingly.

Set OBS output and audio
Video encoder settings
- Codec: H.264 is a broadly compatible baseline. YouTube also supports H.265 and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS live streaming, but encoder availability depends on your OBS installation and hardware.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate: choose a value from YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations that your sustained upload connection can carry.
| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not guarantees for every connection or video. Its encoder guidance includes additional resolutions and minimums; match the full table to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you select. If 1080p30 is not stable, try 720p30 at the recommended 8 Mbps, then reduce further if testing shows the connection cannot sustain it. OBS identifies dropped frames as a possible sign of an unstable connection or a bitrate that is too high for the available connection.
Audio settings
For a typical lecture, use AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS audio. Its guidance for 5.1 audio is 384 kbps at 48 kHz, with 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS supported only with AAC. Most lectures do not need 5.1; check that speech is clear during a test.

Configure YouTube connection and stream key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key if the connection flow asks for it.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder connections.
- Start the stream and check Live Control Room for incoming video, audio, and stream health before relying on the setup.
OBS labels can vary with version and connection workflow. Follow the current YouTube and OBS prompts if the screens differ. YouTube’s recommendations are described in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Match the settings to your computer and connection
Test the actual workload
Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard for an initial fit; it considers hardware resources and network conditions. Then test with the actual lecture, scene, encoder, resolution, and frame rate you intend to use. Compatible system requirements do not by themselves establish that a particular computer can encode a 24/7 stream reliably.

Leave upload headroom
Choose a bitrate based on stable upload capacity, not a single speed-test result. OBS recommends lowering bitrate when the connection cannot sustain it; dropped frames can reflect a network problem between the computer and ingest server. If you see dropped frames, first try a lower bitrate or output resolution and observe whether stream health improves.
Choose an encoder for the hardware
Hardware encoding can move some encoding work off the CPU, but quality and compatibility vary by hardware generation and platform. There is no universally best encoder choice. Test the available hardware and software encoders on your machine with representative content, and use the one that maintains stable output without overloading the system.

Make a 24/7 setup more resilient
- In OBS, enable Automatic Reconnect in Advanced settings. It can help after a connection interruption, but it cannot keep a powered-off computer, failed file playback, network, or YouTube service running.
- Run an extended test and monitor YouTube Live Control Room stream health. OBS and YouTube recommend testing; neither promises uninterrupted operation.
- Keep the source and scene configuration simple. For a single file, use one looping Media Source; for a sequence, use a playlist and verify every transition.
- Store local lecture files somewhere reliably accessible to the computer running OBS. An external SSD is optional storage, not a requirement and not a guarantee of better stream quality or uptime.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or unstable stream health | Upload connection is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate. | Lower bitrate; if needed, reduce resolution or frame rate. Test again on the same connection and monitor stream health. |
| Lecture plays once and stops | Loop is not enabled, or the wrong source type or playlist option is in use. | For one file, enable Loop in Media Source properties. For multiple files, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist. |
| VLC Video does not appear in OBS | VLC is missing or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; pair 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. |
| No speech or unexpectedly quiet audio | Audio may not be captured or mixed as expected. | Watch the Audio Mixer meters while the source plays, then listen to a test stream and confirm the selected audio settings. |
| Source does not restart after changing scenes | Media Source playback depends on whether it is active and its source settings. | Check its restart-when-active behavior and avoid unnecessary scene switching in a continuous setup. |
| Computer struggles during streaming | Encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene load may exceed available resources. | Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test a lower resolution or 30 fps. Compare hardware and software encoders on the actual machine. |
Check rights and YouTube rules before looping
Only stream lecture recordings and other material you have the rights to use. A video being prerecorded or educational does not automatically establish permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s current copyright rules and livestream policies for the content and account involved; this setup guide does not determine whether a specific recording is authorized. Also consider whether repeated or reused material is appropriate for your channel and audience.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the YouTube stream to continue without leaving OBS, a computer, and a home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
