To stop notifications appearing in an OBS study stream, use two safeguards: turn on your operating system’s Do Not Disturb or Focus mode and, when possible, capture only the study app instead of the whole display. Then check the scene in a private preview or test recording with notifications set up as they will be during your session. If you’re asking, “How do I stop notifications from showing on my OBS stream?” or “How do I hide desktop notifications while streaming?”, the right combination depends on what viewers need to see and which alerts you still need to receive.
Why a desktop notification can appear in OBS
OBS Display Capture records the entire monitor. A banner drawn over that monitor can therefore appear in the captured image. Silencing notifications reduces the chance of a banner appearing; changing to a window or application source can keep other parts of the desktop out of the scene on supported platforms.
These approaches solve different problems. Do Not Disturb or Focus changes which notifications reach you, while a narrower capture source changes what OBS includes. Use both if you want fewer interruptions and a more limited stream composition.
Windows 10 and 11: turn on Do Not Disturb and review exceptions
- Open Settings > System > Notifications.
- Turn on Do not disturb.
- Review app notification settings and priority notifications. Alarms, reminders, or selected apps may still be allowed.
- Check automatic Do Not Disturb rules, including rules related to display duplication or using a full-screen app. Do not assume that streaming by itself silences notifications.
- If you start a Focus session, check the captured composition for any Focus timer or interface elements before going live. Focus turns on Do Not Disturb by default.
Windows labels and settings can change between releases, so if a menu differs, use the Notifications settings page in your installed version as the starting point.

Limit the OBS scene to the study app
Windows: use Window Capture when the scene only needs one app
In OBS, add a Window Capture source and select the study app’s window. On Windows, Window Capture can show only the selected window even when other windows overlap it. This can keep desktop banners and unrelated windows outside the captured area, but it also means viewers will not see content outside that window. Confirm that the study material, cursor, and any other intended content remain visible.
If the audience needs to see your whole desktop, keep Display Capture and rely on notification controls as well as a preview check.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
macOS: select an appropriate macOS Screen Capture target
- On macOS 13 or later, add the OBS macOS Screen Capture source.
- Choose Display Capture, Window Capture, or Application Capture according to what the scene needs to show.
- If using Display Capture, OBS offers a Hide OBS from capture option. It hides OBS itself; it is not a general filter for notifications.
OBS identifies its older Window Capture source as deprecated on macOS 13 and newer. Prefer macOS Screen Capture on those versions, and check the source names and options in your installed OBS release.
Linux: check your desktop environment’s notification controls
Linux notification settings vary by distribution and desktop environment, and there is no single procedure established here for all setups. Identify your desktop environment, consult its current notification settings, and check how banners behave with the screen-capture source you use. OBS documents Linux screen-capture source families, but that alone does not establish whether a particular desktop environment suppresses notifications during capture.
Test the scene before the study session
- Set Do Not Disturb or Focus and exceptions the way you plan to use them during the stream.
- Open the study app and arrange the OBS sources exactly as they will appear live.
- Make a short local test recording or check a private preview.
- While checking, trigger or wait for a notification from an app configured to notify during the session. Confirm whether it appears in the captured scene and whether important alerts still reach you.
- Adjust the notification exceptions or capture source, then repeat the check if the composition changes.
This check matters because the result depends on the operating system’s notification rules, the selected capture source, and your scene layout.

Choose the setup that fits your study stream
- Show the whole desktop: use Display Capture and review Do Not Disturb or Focus exceptions and automatic rules.
- Show only one study app: use Window Capture or Application Capture where supported, and verify that the required content remains in frame.
- Keep some alerts available: allow only the people, apps, alarms, reminders, or time-sensitive notifications you need, then check which of them appear in the capture.
- Use Linux: verify behavior for your specific desktop environment rather than relying on a universal setting.
Fix common notification problems
A banner still appears with Do Not Disturb on
Check priority notifications, allowed apps or people, alarms and reminders, time-sensitive alerts, and automatic rules. A Focus or Do Not Disturb mode may silence many notifications without suppressing every category.
Other windows or desktop content appear in the scene
You may be capturing the display rather than the study app. Switch to a window or application source if your operating system and OBS version support it, then confirm the study content is still fully visible.

On macOS 13 and later, use macOS Screen Capture and select its display, window, or application target. The older Window Capture source is deprecated on those versions. OBS’s Hide OBS from capture option hides OBS, not desktop notifications.
